Avoid Overnight Stays in Haikou | Blogger's Personal Review of Accommodation List Within 2km of Four Major Transportation Hubs (Avoiding Pitfalls for Night Arrivals and Early Morning Flights)

After three disastrous experiences around Haikou transportation hubs this year, I decided to revisit the accommodation areas within two kilometers of the four major transportation hubs. The first time, I stayed in an apartment just 500 meters from Haikou East Railway Station, and at midnight, a high-speed train seemed to run right up to my bed as it pulled into the station. The second time, I booked a free airport shuttle service at Meilan Airport, but ended up being taken to a village three kilometers away, where I had to drag my suitcase for ten minutes through the dark in the early morning. This post won't focus on trendy hotels; it will only discuss truly suitable accommodations for those arriving late at night, those with early morning flights, and those on transit.

Haikou doesn't have a subway, but its island-looping high-speed rail, suburban trains, airport, and bus stations form a very practical transportation network. The following breakdown is based on four types of hubs: high-speed rail stations, airports, bus stations, and suburban transfer stations. Each area is within a two-kilometer radius; you can refer to the walking or taxi times based on personal experience.

Haikou East Railway Station: If you don't want to get up early to catch the island-looping high-speed rail, stay in the "Dingcun-Fengxiang East Road" area.

Haikou East Railway Station is a key transfer point for the Hainan Island High-Speed Railway and the city rail, and it's also the first stop for many passengers transferring through the island in the early morning. Based on my own experience, staying between Dingcun Road and Fengxiang East Road, it's about an 8-15 minute walk or a 5-minute taxi ride from the station. This distance is delicate: the announcements and traffic in the station square are barely audible, but walking there in the morning isn't too rushed. It's suitable for people taking the Hainan Island High-Speed Railway to Wenchang, Wanning, or Sanya early the next morning, and also for those returning to Haikou from Sanya late at night who need immediate rest.

Reference times for first and last trains: The first train from Haikou East Station to Meilan Airport departs around 6:30 AM, and the last train departs around 9:30 PM; the high-speed rail around the island departs even earlier, and the last train usually departs around 10 PM. If you have a high-speed rail ticket for before 7:00 AM, staying in this area is much more reliable than staying on the west coast, as you can at least set your alarm clock back by 20 minutes.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: Avoid choosing low-floor rooms located right next to the main road of Yingbin Avenue and the south side of the railway line. The low-frequency vibrations from high-speed trains entering and leaving the station can be fatal for light sleepers. If arriving at the station in the middle of the night, it is recommended to exit from the north side and walk along Fengxiang East Road, where there are more streetlights and convenience stores, making it safer to pull your luggage than through the alleys of Dingcun urban village.

Meilan Airport: The best choice for early morning flights with overnight stays is "Meilan Market - Lingshan Old Street".

The truly suitable places to stay overnight around Meilan Airport aren't the star-rated hotels next to the terminal, but rather the area around Meilan Market and Lingshan Old Street. Based on my own experience, a taxi from Meilan Market to Terminal 1 takes about five to eight minutes, and in the early morning when there's no traffic, it's only about ten minutes by shared electric scooter. Many local guesthouses offer airport pick-up services in the early morning, but you must confirm in advance that they will drop you off right downstairs, not leave you stranded at the village entrance and make you navigate dark roads yourself. This is suitable for people catching early morning flights before 7 AM who don't want to spend the budget for high-end hotels.

Reference times for first and last trains: The earliest train from Meilan Station can enter the city at around 6:10 am, and the latest train from Haikou East Station is around 10 pm; Airport buses and public buses stop running in the early morning, so don't rely on public transportation after landing in the middle of the night. Taking a taxi to your accommodation within two kilometers is the safest option.

Avoid these pitfalls: Be sure to avoid self-built houses right next to the fence on the north and east sides of the airport runway, as the noise from takeoffs and landings will be amplified significantly. Rooms facing away from the runway and nestled inside the old streets of Lingshan will be much quieter. Be careful when driving luggage through village roads at night; some sections lack separate sidewalks, so it's best to have the driver drive into alleyways.

Haikou Bus Terminal: Overnight long-distance passengers stay at "Fucheng Zhongshan South - Gaodeng West Street".

Although Haikou Bus Terminal and Haikou East Railway Station are adjacent, Haikou East Railway Station's long-distance drop-off area is further south, and many overnight buses will drop off passengers in front of the station at 1 or 2 AM. Based on personal experience, staying in the area from Zhongshan South Road to Gaodeng West Street in Fucheng District is a 10-15 minute walk or a 5-minute bike ride from the bus terminal. This area is a local old community, and there are still rice noodle roll shops and pharmacies late at night, making it suitable for inter-provincial long-distance travelers who want a hot meal or to stock up on daily necessities after arriving late.

Reference times for first and last bus departures: Most buses around the bus terminal depart between 6:00 and 6:30 am, making it convenient to travel to the city center or transfer at the East Station. After arriving at the station in the early morning, taxis and ride-hailing vehicles tend to concentrate on the Yingbin Avenue side. When crossing the station square, it is safer to use the surface zebra crossing instead of the underpass.

Avoid these pitfalls: This area has many older residential buildings, and houses facing the street are prone to electric scooter alarms and noise from late-night food stalls. It's recommended to choose guesthouses that are not near the street and have enclosed courtyards. It's not advisable to walk through the old alleys on the north side of Zhongjie Road at night, as the streetlights are dim and the cobblestone streets are not good for luggage. Walking along the main road of Gaodeng West Street is the safest option.

City Rail West Station: Residents of the "Jinpan-Nanhai Avenue" area are conveniently located near the bus and rail transit interchange.

Haikou doesn't have a subway; the city's intercity trains are the main mode of rapid commuting within the city. There are numerous bus connections around Chengxi Station, making it easy to travel west to Haikou Station or east to Haikou East Station. Based on my own experience, living near the intersection of Jinpan Road and Nanhai Avenue, it's about a 12-15 minute walk or a 6-minute taxi ride from Chengxi Station. This area is much quieter and has a stronger local atmosphere than the logistics park near the station. In the mornings, you can see commuters carrying their local tea bags and rushing to catch their trains.

Reference times for first and last trains: From Chengxi Station to Haikou Station, the first train departs around 6:20 AM and the last train departs around 9:30 PM; the first train to Meilan Station departs slightly later. This service is suitable for people who need to run errands in Haikou city but do not want to squeeze onto crowded buses during the morning rush hour, as well as transit passengers coming from the direction of Haikou Station who need to go to the airport the next day.

Avoid these pitfalls: There are many large trucks on Nanhai Avenue, and rooms facing the main road may experience the sound of trucks accelerating at night. Make sure to request a room facing away from Nanhai Avenue. There are steps at the entrance and exit of Chengxi Station; for large luggage, it is recommended to use the accessible ramp. When taking a taxi, ask the driver to stop at the south drop-off area to avoid crossing the road.

Blogger's Summary and Practical Tips Checklist

Having personally tested the area within a two-kilometer radius of these four transportation hubs, my biggest takeaway is that when choosing accommodation near Haikou's transportation hubs, you can't just look at the straight-line distance. You also need to consider the actual walking distance after arriving late at night and whether the room is near a road or railway track. If you are transferring on the Hainan Island High-Speed Railway, prioritize the area south of Haikou East Station. If you are catching an early morning flight, Meilan Market to Lingshan Old Street offers a time advantage over the city center. For long-distance travelers arriving at night, staying in the old community of Fucheng will allow you to recover your energy the fastest.

Practical tips: 1. Coastal cities are humid, and bedding on lower floors may smell musty. Prioritize rooms on the third floor or above, or rooms with dehumidifiers. 2. Many apartments in the Haikou transportation hub area do not have a front desk. Before arriving late at night, be sure to contact the hotel to confirm the room number and access control to avoid waiting on the roadside. 3. When carrying luggage at night, try to take main roads. Some shortcuts around the airport and high-speed rail station are village roads with poor lighting and lots of water. 4. During the typhoon season from April to October, allow extra time to get to the transportation hub. During heavy rain, two kilometers can turn into a 40-minute traffic jam.
