Slow Travel in Taizhou | 7 Days 6 Nights: Mountain, Sea, and Ancient City - Day 3-4: Choose Between Hot Springs and Forest

Taizhou's mountain and sea landscape is scattered, making it suitable for a slow-paced seven-day, six-night itinerary. This guide only focuses on two to three key locations each day. Days 3 and 4 feature two branching routes: the "Linhai Ancient City Hot Spring Route" and the "Xianju Ancient Town Forest Route." Choosing one of these routes will not affect the subsequent rendezvous. This is suitable for trips with parents or preschool children.

Day 1: Landing in Jiaojiang: Strolling along Haimen Old Street and Baiyun Mountain

After arriving at Taizhou Station or Taizhou West Station, check into the old town of Jiaojiang. In the afternoon, first visit Haimen Old Street, where the blue-brick arcade buildings and old warehouses of the fishing port are well-preserved; the entire street can be explored on foot in about an hour. In the evening, climb Baiyun Mountain or Baiyun Pavilion; the gentle slope trail takes about forty minutes and offers panoramic views of the Jiaojiang estuary. There are no rushed activities scheduled for the day; dinner will feature local seafood, with recommended dishes including sand garlic bean noodles and braised yellow croaker.

Day 2: Tiantai Buddhist Kingdom - Slow Walk around Guoqing Temple and Chicheng Mountain

After breakfast, head to Tiantai County, about an hour's drive. In the morning, visit Guoqing Temple. The area around the Sui Pagoda, Sui Plum Blossom, and Seven Buddha Pagoda is relatively flat, suitable for elderly people with wheelchairs or children walking. Have a vegetarian lunch near the temple. In the afternoon, go to Chicheng Mountain, choosing the gentle slope hiking trail from the South Gate. The round trip should be completed within two hours. If you are not physically fit, you can turn back after reaching Ziyun Cave.

Day 3-Day 4 Fork: Linhai Ancient City Hot Spring Route or Xianju Ancient Town Forest Route

You'll need to choose one of these two routes depending on the season and weather. In autumn/winter or on rainy days, the coastal route is recommended, focusing on the ancient city and hot springs. In spring/summer or during consecutive sunny days, the Xianju route is recommended, focusing on ancient towns and primeval forests. Neither route requires frequent changes of accommodation and offers a slower pace.

Branch A: Linhai Ancient City and Niutou Mountain Hot Spring (Day 3-Day 4)

Day 3: In the morning, move from Jiaojiang to Linhai. In the afternoon, walk along Ziyang Ancient Street and the southern section of Taizhou City Wall, known as the "Great Wall of Jiangnan." Ziyang Ancient Street has gentle stone-paved paths, and local snacks such as egg white lamb tail and wheat shrimp are available for refreshments. The section of the city wall from Xingshan Gate to Chaotian Gate has a gentle slope, suitable for a leisurely walk. Day 4: In the morning, visit Donghu Park. The lakeside trail has no steps, making it suitable for seniors to exercise in the morning. In the afternoon, head to Niutoushan Hot Spring Resort for a two-hour soak to relieve the fatigue from the previous two days of walking. Return to Linhai for overnight accommodation that evening.

Branch B: Xianju Potan Ancient Town and Danzhu Primitive Forest (Day 3-Day 4)

Day 3: Travel from Jiaojiang to Xianju, first visiting Potan Ancient Town. The town's cobblestone streets and Ming and Qing dynasty shops are well-preserved, with no motor vehicles interfering; pushing a stroller is slightly bumpy but manageable. In the afternoon, check into a guesthouse in Danzhu Township, and take a walk along the Weiqiang River in the evening. Day 4: Dedicate the entire day to either Danzhu Primitive Forest or the North Gate of Shenxianju. Danzhu Primitive Forest has a flat wooden boardwalk suitable for leisurely walking; if choosing Shenxianju, it's recommended to take the cable car up and down from the North Gate to reduce the strain of steps. Return to Xianju County for the night.

Day 5: Meeting in Wenling: Shitang Stone Houses and Xiaoruo Village

Regardless of which branch you take, after breakfast on Day 5, the group will head to Shitang Town, Wenling. In the morning, explore Shitang Old Street and the stone houses in the back hill. There are many stone steps, but you can choose to walk slowly along the coastal road. In the afternoon, visit Xiaoruo Village, where colorful houses are concentrated on both sides of the harbor, offering many photo opportunities. The ground is paved with cement and has a few steps; elderly people can wait on the outside. In the evening, watch the sunset near the Millennium Dawn Monument.

Day 6 Wenling Changyu Grottoes and Dongxia Beach

In the morning, visit Changyu Caves, with a recommendation for viewing Xidong and Shuiyundong. The temperature inside the caves is stable, making them a cool retreat in summer and a windproof shelter in winter. Some sections of the scenic area have gentle slopes, which can be covered by electric carts. In the afternoon, depending on the tides, head to Dongxia Beach or Longmen Beach. Children can play in the sand, and the elderly can stroll along the embankment path. The itinerary for the day is relaxed, so there's no need to go beachcombing.

Day 7: Jiaojiang - Taizhou Museum and Return Trip

After returning to Jiaojiang, visit the Taizhou Museum in the morning. The museum has a flat layout, elevators, and rest areas. If time permits, you can take a walk in the Civic Square or Hehe Park. In the afternoon, depending on your return train schedule, there are buses and ride-hailing services available from both Taizhou Station and Taizhou West Station.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The central axis of Guoqing Temple, Ziyang Ancient Street, the wooden boardwalk in the Danzhu Primitive Forest, the East Lake Ring Trail, the main passage of Changyu Dongtian Guanxi Cave, and the Baiyun Mountain Half-Mountain Trail are all sections without continuous steep slopes or with few steps. For Shenxianju, Chicheng Mountain, and the Shitang Back Mountain Stone House Cluster, it is recommended to assess your physical condition and prioritize cable cars or electric vehicles.

List of frequently used local apps

Use Gaode Maps or Baidu Maps for navigation; use "Taizhou Travel" or "Baba Express" for bus and intercity bus schedules; refer to Dianping and Meituan for restaurant reviews; book tickets through "Zhejiang Government Service Platform" or the official mini-programs of various scenic spots; and purchase long-distance tickets through 12306 or "Zhejiang Express".

Clothing suggestions for rainy/dry season

Taizhou experiences its rainy season from May to September, especially with frequent plum rains in June and the outer bands of typhoons in August. It is recommended to bring a folding umbrella, non-slip sandals, and quick-drying clothing. The dry season runs from October to April of the following year, with large temperature differences between day and night and strong winds along the coast; a windproof jacket and a light down jacket are necessary. If hiking the Xianju Forest Trail, long-sleeved clothing for mosquito repellent is recommended even in summer, and a fleece lining is recommended in winter.
