Two-Day Rambling Tour of Hero City | Weekend Special Forces Flash Mob in Nanchang: From the Morning Light of Mixed Rice Noodles to the Night View of the Riverbanks

The core of this weekend getaway in Nanchang is to utilize Metro Lines 2 and 1 to connect high-density locations in the old city center into a loop that avoids backtracking. The following itinerary assumes entry from "Nanchang Station" and exit from "Nanchang West Station" the following afternoon. Travelers will only need a backpack and will rely on the metro and shared electric bikes for transportation. This itinerary is suitable for young tourists with only two days and one night who don't want to miss out on the core experiences of Nanchang.

Day 1: High-density sightseeing in the city center: from the morning light of rice noodles to the night view of both banks of the river.

After exiting Nanchang Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 directly to Bayi Square Station. Have breakfast in the alley on the east side of the square. A Nanchang morning starts with a bowl of cold mixed noodles and a pot of clay pot soup. The dried radish, peanuts, and chili oil in the noodles are key to its flavor. For the clay pot soup, I recommend the preserved egg and pork patty or squid flavors; they're a satisfying and not greasy combination. After breakfast, walk to Bayi Square. The early morning crowds make it a good time to photograph the monument and the exterior of the Jiangxi Provincial Art Museum. The museum's architecture bears the marks of its era and is a great spot for low-angle shots. Then take Metro Line 1 from Bayi Square Station to Wanshou Palace Station and enter the Wanshou Palace Historical and Cultural District. This area offers a variety of snacks, including boiled dishes, thick soups, white sugar cakes, and beef offal. I suggest breaking your lunch into three or four small dishes, ordering only the smallest portion of each to try more without filling your stomach. There's a brief lull in the food stalls after 1:30 PM, making it a good time to buy during off-peak hours. In the afternoon, walk or cycle about one kilometer from Wanshou Palace to Tengwang Pavilion. Don't stop at every floor; focus on the "Preface to the Tengwang Pavilion" themed exhibition hall and the view of the Gan River from the top floor. On a clear day, you can see the skyline where the old city meets Honggutan. In the evening, take Metro Line 1 to Qiushui Square Station and walk along the riverside path to the musical fountain area. The fountain often has extra shows on weekends, so it's recommended to arrive half an hour early to secure a good spot. Standing on the steps by the Gan River offers the best vantage point for viewing the light show on both banks. After the night show, take Line 1 back to the old city. Have a late-night snack at Hama Street or Chuanshan Road; you can find boiled dishes, fried noodles, or barbecue to finish your meal.

Day 2: Suburban Highlights: Half-day trip to Haihunhou State Site Park, flexible return trip in the afternoon.

The second day is dedicated to the Haihunhou State Site Park, the most significant site near Nanchang. From the city center, take Metro Line 1 to Changjiang Road Station, then transfer to the tourist bus to the park. The journey takes about 40 minutes one way; it's recommended to take a bus before 9:00 AM to avoid long queues during the first wave of entry after the park opens. The "Golden Haihun" exhibition is the highlight of the day, featuring a high density of information on gold artifacts, bamboo slips, and bronzes unearthed from Liu He's tomb. Following the exhibition route, you can see everything in about two hours. Afterward, walk to the Liu He tomb area and the perimeter of the site museum to experience the overall layout of a Han Dynasty marquis's tomb. The entire visit should be completed within three hours. You can have a light lunch on the return trip or have a simple meal near Changjiang Road Station. If your return high-speed train departs from Nanchang West Station, a taxi directly from the site park to Nanchang West Station takes about half an hour, saving time compared to returning to the city center and then back. If you have extra time, you can make a short stop at Jiulong Lake near Nanchang West Station, but it's not recommended to add any other attractions to your itinerary to avoid catching your train.

Transportation Saving Card

Nanchang Metro supports "Lulu Travel" QR code payment for fares. For frequent trips over two days, a one-day or three-day pass can be purchased, suitable for multiple entries and exits during the trip. For short-distance connections in the old city, shared electric bikes are more flexible than buses, but parking spots are concentrated around shopping areas, so check the return area before riding. Metro Line 2 connects Nanchang Station and Nanchang West Station directly, offering convenient transfers and eliminating the need for taxis.

Packing list

A two-day, one-night trip will suffice with a lightweight backpack; avoid using a rolling suitcase as it will slow you down. Essentials include well-worn sneakers, a power bank, a folding umbrella, an empty water bottle, and a quick-drying T-shirt. In summer, also pack sunscreen and mosquito repellent. A lightweight point-and-shoot camera is a good choice; a tripod is not recommended as the crowds at Tengwang Pavilion and Qiushui Square are dense, and handheld shooting is sufficient.

Avoiding pitfalls while queuing

Book your visit to Tengwang Pavilion online in advance, and try to avoid the peak tour times from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Visiting in the afternoon will allow for a more relaxed experience. Haihunhou Ruins Park is closed on Mondays; if you plan to visit on Sunday, you'll need to adjust your itinerary or cancel your visit altogether. The Qiushui Square musical fountain is very crowded on weekends; arrive at least half an hour early to secure a good spot. The subway station may be briefly crowded after the performance ends, so consider leaving a little later. The food stalls at Wanshou Palace become less busy after 1:30 PM, making it a good time to buy food during off-peak hours.
