Dalian Hub Overnight Map | Blogger's Personal Tests of 4 Affordable Areas Within 2km (A List to Avoid for Night Arrivals/Early Morning Flights)

Having used Dalian as a transit hub for three consecutive years, I've taken afternoon naps at Dalian North Railway Station, taken taxis at Zhoushuizi Airport in the early hours of the morning, and dragged my suitcase up the old stairs at Jianshe Street Bus Station. Dalian offers many accommodation options, but when it comes to "staying near a transportation hub," the differences between areas are greater than those between hotel brands. This article doesn't recommend specific hotels, but rather summarizes four areas within 2 kilometers of transportation hubs that I've personally tested and found suitable for short-term overnight stays. It focuses on walking/taxi times, subway first and last train times, who these areas are suitable for, and some pitfalls I encountered at night.

Dalian North Railway Station & Huanan Square Area (High-speed Railway Station)

Dalian North Railway Station is a major high-speed rail/bullet train station. After exiting the station, don't wander aimlessly around the plaza looking for a hotel. There are many apartments within walking distance, but their quality varies greatly, and there are many touts soliciting customers at night. I recommend going to Huanan Plaza, which is about 2 kilometers away. It's just one stop on Metro Line 1, about an 8-10 minute taxi ride at night, and about a 25-minute walk during the day. It has complete amenities, with chain fast food restaurants and convenience stores downstairs. It's suitable for people arriving after 10 pm and needing to catch a high-speed train or head to Dalian Bay Wharf early the next morning, as well as transit passengers with large luggage who don't want to walk too far.

First and last train reference: The first train on Metro Line 1 in both directions departs around 6:00 AM, and the last train towards Hekou departs around 10:30 PM, while the last train towards Yaojia departs around 11:00 PM. If arriving at night, it's recommended to take a taxi directly. Tips to avoid: Some apartments east of the North Station are close to the railway tracks; when booking, please specify "not facing the railway." The area near Huanan Square has many high-rise buildings, and there may be noise from the night market on weekend evenings; light sleepers should choose higher floors or rooms on the back of the street. Additionally, the apartment buildings in this area are a mix of old and new, and there can be significant differences between different units within the same building; try to choose units renovated within the last two years with available videos or photos of the renovation.

Zhoushuizi Airport, Shandong Road/Qianshan Road area (airport)

Zhoushuizi Airport is very close to the city center, and the most well-established and cost-effective accommodation area within 2 kilometers is around Shandong Road and Qianshan Road. It's about a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport, and about a 20-minute bus ride during the day. Walking is impractical, especially with luggage. This area has a high concentration of older residential areas, offering more affordable food than near the airport. There are also barbecue stalls and convenience stores late at night, making it suitable for those catching early morning flights, landing in the early morning, or renting a car at the airport the next morning. Many guesthouses are hidden in 1990s-era neighborhoods; the exteriors are old, but the rooms are clean, and the prices are much more affordable than the business hotels near the airport.

Airport shuttle buses and public buses have unreliable nighttime schedules. The first subway train on Line 2 departs from the airport station around 6:00 AM, and the last train departs around 10:30 PM. If your flight is late at night, booking a ride-hailing service is more convenient. Tips to avoid: Some residential areas in this area are located below aircraft runways, where you can hear significant noise during the day. Check the map before booking and avoid choosing properties facing the runway. Older residential areas vary greatly in sound insulation and elevator conditions; if you have large luggage, confirm the availability of an elevator. A special note: taxi queues at the airport may be long when landing in the early morning; using a ride-hailing service to locate a temporary parking spot outside the arrivals level is more reliable.

Jianshe Street/Beigangqiao Passenger Transport Center·Xianglujiao Wuyi Square Area (Passenger Transport Center)

Dalian's long-distance bus hubs mainly revolve around Jianshe Street and Beigang Bridge, where many overnight buses depart or arrive. Based on my personal experience, the most suitable place to stay isn't the old hotel directly opposite the bus station, but rather along the Xianglujiao to Wuyi Square line, about 1.5 kilometers west. This area has both Metro Line 2 (Xianglujiao Station) and Line 1 (Wuyi Square Station), covering both lines, making transfers to Xinghai Square and Dalian Railway Station convenient. It's about a 7-minute taxi ride from the bus station and a 20-minute walk; the roads are light at night, and walking doesn't feel like a detour.

First and last bus reference: The first bus on Metro Lines 1 and 2 departs around 6:00 AM and the last bus around 10:30 PM. Multiple bus routes also operate during the day, making this area suitable for passengers arriving late by night bus or those transferring to a cross-sea bus to Lushun/Development Zone early in the morning. Tips to avoid: Some older buildings in the old town area lack elevators, making it noisy to drag luggage up and down stairs at night; rooms facing the street may have the sound of trolley trucks at the morning market, so if you have trouble sleeping, please note "high floor, not facing the street". Additionally, many older hotels in this area still require booking by phone at the front desk, and online listings are updated slowly, so it's best to confirm your booking status before arrival.

Xi'an Road Interchange Station & Xinggong Street Area (Core Interchange Metro Station)

If you need to quickly transfer between Metro Lines 1 and 2 in Dalian, Xi'an Road Station is an essential stop. However, hotels in the commercial area directly above Xi'an Road Station are expensive and noisy on weekends, so I usually choose the area around Xinggong Street, one stop further away. It's about an 8-12 minute walk or a one-stop bus ride from there, which is also within 2 kilometers. If you arrive after 10 PM, there are metro lines from Dalian North Railway Station or the airport, and you can usually catch the last train. The Xinggong Street area has both apartments in older residential buildings and several affordable chain stores, making it a quieter option than the Xi'an Road core area.

First and last train reference: Line 1 and Line 2 from Xi'an Road Station depart around 6:00 AM, and the last train departs around 10:30 PM to 11:00 PM, sometimes extended on holidays. Suitable for those who plan to do a lot of sightseeing in the city the next day, or those entering the city from Dalian North Station but don't want to transfer too far. Tips to avoid: The old commercial and residential buildings along Xinggong Street generally have poor sound insulation, especially on weekends with restaurant exhaust noise and KTV crowds leaving in the evening. Try to choose a building above the 10th floor, facing away from the main road. When taking a taxi to Xinggong Street in the early morning, drivers may assume you are in the core area of Xi'an Road; make sure your location is accurate down to the gate of your residential complex. Also, Dalian Metro operates relatively early, so don't rely on "metro connections" as a backup plan for the late night.

Of the four areas, choose Huanan Square for catching the high-speed rail, Shandong Road/Qianshan Road for catching a flight, Xianglujiao/Wuyi Square for overnight buses, and Xinggong Street for subway transfers within the city. Don't just focus on hotel ratings; location and orientation are key to a quality night's stay. There are many budget-friendly accommodations around Dalian's transportation hub, but the truly comfortable ones are those away from the noise of railway tracks, shipping lanes, and night markets.

Practical Tips: 1. When booking any room in any area, first check the "walking distance to the nearest subway station" and "whether there is an elevator"; 2. When arriving at night, try to choose an area within 2 kilometers that you can reach by taxi for the starting fare, so as not to waste time finding your way in the early morning; 3. Dalian is windy in winter, and it feels even colder near the North Railway Station and the airport, so prioritize rooms with underfloor heating or air conditioning with stable heating; 4. Most low-priced apartments do not provide luggage storage. If you need to store your luggage for early morning flights or late evening trains, confirm this on the booking platform in advance to avoid finding yourself with nowhere to put your luggage when you arrive; 5. No matter how late you arrive, save a screenshot of the specific building and entrance, as the unit numbers in old residential areas of Dalian are extremely difficult to find at night.
