A Relaxed Beijing Getaway: A 7-Day, 6-Night In-Depth Tour for Families and Retirees

The key to slowing down your visit to Beijing is not the number of places you visit, but rather planning only two to three key locations each day, and allowing time for lunch breaks and rest at the hotel. This itinerary is structured around 7 days and 6 nights, prioritizing areas with flat terrain, gentle slopes, and ample rest stops. It is suitable for families with parents and children who are taking time off work, as well as retired readers who are not in a rush.

Day 1 Arrival at the southern section of the central axis

It's best to avoid overly packed schedules on the day of arrival. If you arrive in Beijing around noon, you can first visit the Temple of Heaven Park in the afternoon, entering from the east gate, walking along the Danbi Bridge to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, and then returning via the ancient cypress grove on the west side. The entire route is mostly flat cobblestone paths. In the evening, visit Qianmen Street, walking only along the main street and Beijing Fang, avoiding the hutongs on both sides to minimize backtracking and crowds. Return to the hotel early in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.

Day 2: Forbidden City and Jingshan Park

The day with the most steps is the Forbidden City, so only the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park are included. Enter the park at your scheduled time in the morning and walk along the central axis from the Meridian Gate to the Imperial Garden, focusing on the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, the Hall of Preserving Harmony, and the Palace of Compassion and Tranquility. In the afternoon, spend half an hour at the rest area within the park. Exit through the Shenwu Gate and enter Jingshan Park in the afternoon, choosing the gentle eastern slope to ascend. After stopping at the Wanchun Pavilion, descend via the same route. Continuing west is not recommended to reduce stress on your knees.

Day 3-Day 4 Two-day branching trip to the suburbs: Ancient town and hot spring route and wetland nature route

Two options are available for these two days. Option A, "Ancient Town and Hot Spring Route": Day 3: Visit Gubei Water Town in the morning, only visiting the workshop street, Yongshun Dyehouse, and the hilltop church viewing platform during the day. In the afternoon, check into a hot spring inn for a relaxing soak. Day 4: Visit the eastern section of the Simatai Great Wall on the gentle slope in the morning, only reaching the first watchtower before returning to the city in the afternoon. This route is more crowded on weekends, so it is recommended to depart on a weekday if possible.

Option B, "Wetland Nature Route": Day 3: Visit the Yanqing Wild Duck Lake Wetland Nature Reserve, walk along the boardwalk around the lake or hike half of it for bird watching, and rest at the visitor center in the afternoon; Day 4: In the morning, visit the Chinese Horticulture Exhibition Area and Horticulture Town in the World Horticultural Exposition Park, staying for about two hours, and return to the city in the afternoon. Shade in the wetlands is limited, so be sure to take precautions against sunburn in summer and wind in spring and autumn.

Day 5 Summer Palace and a leisurely stroll in the western suburbs

The Summer Palace is quite large, so it's recommended to enter from the New East Gate, walk along the Long Corridor to the Marble Boat, and then take a boat back to South Lake Island and the vicinity of the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. This route mainly involves flat paths along the lake and boat rides, avoiding crossing Longevity Hill. In the afternoon, if your energy permits, you can take a walk in Zizhuyuan Park, but it's not advisable to add Yuanmingyuan Park as well, to avoid excessive walking.

Day 6 Beihai Park and Shichahai Waterfront

Enter Beihai Park from the east gate in the morning, walk around the north side of Taiye Pond to the Five Dragon Pavilion, and view Qionghua Island from a distance without climbing to the top. In the afternoon, exit from the north gate of Beihai Park, walk along the west bank of Qianhai Lake in Shichahai to the Lotus Market, only walking along the gentle waterfront and not entering the alleys on both sides. This path is short and has many benches, making it suitable for the elderly and children to rest at any time.

Day 7 Light Arrangements Before Returning Home

On the last day, depending on your return travel time, you can choose either the Beijing Zoo or the China Science and Technology Museum. Both have indoor rest areas and accessible facilities, and the activities are low-intensity, suitable for a light visit after storing your luggage. It is recommended to finish before noon at the latest, allowing ample time to travel to the airport or train station.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The central axis of the Forbidden City, the route from Danbi Bridge to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the Temple of Heaven, the north bank of Taiye Pond in Beihai Park, the western edge of Qianhai Lake in Shichahai, the Long Corridor to the Marble Boat in the Summer Palace, and the boardwalk at Wild Duck Lake are all routes with gentle slopes and plenty of rest stops. In Jingshan Park, be sure to take the gentle eastern slope. For the Great Wall, only choose the first watchtower on the eastern section of Simatai or the gentle southern slope of Badaling; do not aim for the summit or continuous ascent.

List of frequently used local apps

Before traveling, you can install Gaode Map for real-time bus and pedestrian navigation, install Yitongxing or Beijing Yikatong for subway and bus rides, book tickets and venue reservations through the official mini-programs of each scenic spot, refer to Dianping for restaurant information and check the opening status, use 12306 for train ticket changes, and it is recommended to set the weather forecast app to Beijing and enable rain alerts.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Beijing's rainy season is mainly from late July to early August. When going out, bring a folding umbrella and non-slip shoes. After short periods of heavy rain, some scenic areas' stone paths become slippery, so it's advisable to avoid low-lying areas. Spring, autumn, and early winter are the dry seasons with dry air, so bring lip balm, moisturizer, and a windproof jacket. There are large temperature differences between day and night, so it's recommended to wear a "quick-drying inner layer, a thin down or fleece middle layer, and a windproof outer layer" layer. Elderly people and children can bring an extra vest to carry in their bags.
