Zhangjiagang Overnight Map | Personally tested cost-effective areas within 2km of 4 types of transportation hubs (including avoiding pitfalls)

I had three bad experiences staying overnight in Zhangjiagang: once, I stayed directly opposite the high-speed rail station and was woken up by the sound of trains braking in the early morning; another time, I stayed behind the bus station to save money and tripped over a curb on the non-motorized vehicle lane while dragging my suitcase in the middle of the night; and yet another time, I stayed in the city center to catch an early flight and almost missed my flight because I couldn't get a taxi in the early morning. Later, I specifically visited areas within two kilometers of four types of transportation hubs and filtered out the cost-effective areas suitable for "overnight transit". This list is not ranked by star rating, but only by four criteria: "close to the hub, not tiring to walk, not rushed in the early morning, and no bad experiences in the middle of the night".

High-speed rail station area: Zhangjiagang Station South Square towards Tangqiao Town

Zhangjiagang Railway Station is located in Tangqiao Town. The station square is spacious, but the best places to stay overnight are not the row of new hotels directly opposite the station, but rather a cluster of small hotels about 800 meters to 1 kilometer from the west side of the South Square along Beijing Road towards the center of Tangqiao Town. It takes about 12 to 15 minutes to walk from here to the station entrance, or about 5 minutes by taxi. After exiting the station late at night, you can usually call a taxi almost immediately.

First and last train reference: The first high-speed train departs from Zhangjiagang Station around 6:20 AM daily, and the last train arrives close to 11:00 PM. Trains to Shanghai, Suzhou, and Nantong are more frequent. This is suitable for people catching early trains to Shanghai and Nantong, as well as travelers arriving in Zhangjiagang from northern Jiangsu overnight who don't want to travel further into the city. Convenience stores and breakfast stalls outside the station open before 6:00 AM, so you don't have to go hungry if you catch an early train.

Avoid these pitfalls: Some hotels in this area are less than 300 meters from the railway. Lower-floor, north-facing rooms can hear the sounds of trains slowing down as they enter and exit the station, as well as the friction noise from the tracks. The second time, I specifically chose a room facing away from the railway, and my sleep quality improved significantly. If you're dragging luggage at night, I suggest using the asphalt sidewalk on the west side of Beijing Road, and avoid walking through the gaps between the paved tiles in front of the station square, as it creates a lot of resistance, and the square's lighting is dim at night.

Airport shuttle area: Xinyuan Road area east of the bus station

Zhangjiagang doesn't have a civil aviation airport, but there's a city terminal on the east side of the bus station. Airport buses to Wuxi Shuofang and Nantong Xingdong depart from here. I categorize this area as the "airport shuttle accommodation area," and I recommend the area near the intersection of Xinyuan Road and Jiyang East Road. It's about a six- to eight-minute walk to the terminal, or about a three-minute taxi ride, so you won't be in a rush dragging your carry-on suitcase in the early morning.

Airport shuttle bus reference: The first bus to Wuxi Shuofang usually departs between 5:30 and 6:00 PM, and the last bus departs around 7:00 PM; the last bus to Nantong Xingdong departs slightly earlier. The frequency of service isn't particularly high. The biggest advantage of staying in this area is that you can walk to the terminal without having to allocate extra time for taking a taxi from the city center. There are also several 24-hour convenience stores nearby, so you can buy water and bread after landing in the early morning.

This hotel is suitable for early morning flight passengers, those landing at the airport late at night and taking a ride-hailing service back to Zhangjiagang, and overnight travelers needing to transit between the airport and the high-speed rail station. A word of caution: Avoid rooms on lower floors facing the main road of Jiyang East Road, as the sounds of luggage compartments opening and closing and passengers talking can be heard up the street when the airport shuttle bus departs in the early morning. Remember to confirm the shuttle bus schedule a day in advance, as it may be subject to change during holidays. Also, some ride-hailing drivers are not familiar with the east gate of the terminal, so it's best to specify the city's main airport gate when booking.

Passenger Transport Center Area: Angle between South Ring Road and the auxiliary road of Jingang Avenue

Zhangjiagang Bus Station is the core station for long-distance and rural bus routes within the city, and the surrounding area is densely populated with old hotels and chain hotels. I would recommend the alley between the auxiliary road of South Ring Road and Jingang Avenue on the southwest side of the bus station. It's about a seven to ten-minute walk or a four-minute taxi ride from the ticket hall. This area isn't the closest to the station, but it avoids the southeast corner where large buses concentrate their entry and exit, making it quieter at night.

First and last bus reference: Long-distance inter-county bus routes generally operate from 5:50 am to 7:30 pm, with some last buses to towns stopping around 9 pm. This hotel is very convenient for people arriving in Zhangjiagang overnight and needing to take an early morning bus to Fenghuang Town or Jinfeng Town the next day. The bus stop is just around the corner from the hotel, avoiding the morning rush hour traffic jams in the city.

Avoid these pitfalls: There are many people soliciting accommodations around the bus station. After exiting the station, don't follow them. Instead, check hotels on the western section of South Ring Road through reputable online platforms. Be careful when dragging your luggage along the auxiliary road of Jingang Avenue late at night; there's a concrete curb between the non-motorized vehicle lane and the motorized vehicle lane. I almost dropped my suitcase the first time I did this. Prioritize rooms on back streets; lower floors facing South Ring Road allow you to hear the revving and short horns of buses starting up.

Core interchange subway station area: Huachang Road and Yangshe Old Street area

Zhangjiagang currently does not have an operational subway, but the planned Suyuzhang Line will have a station at Huachang Road in the city center. This location is already a core transportation hub with the densest bus routes and the highest concentration of shared bicycles. Based on my personal experience as a "future subway station area," I recommend the area from the north gate of Yangshe Old Street to Hexi Road and Yuanlin Road. It's about a five-minute walk to the planned station, and currently, a taxi ride to the high-speed rail station takes about fifteen minutes.

First and last bus reference: Most main urban bus routes operate from around 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM, with very few night routes. This area is suitable for people who run errands in the city during the day and want to take a bus or taxi to the high-speed rail station/bus station the next day. It's also suitable for overnight travelers who want to stroll through Yangshe Old Street and try local snacks. This area has no shortage of breakfast shops and cafes, and the pace of life is much more comfortable than around the transportation hub.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: The streets in the old town are narrow. After 10 PM, ride-hailing services often cancel orders at the south gate of Yangshe Old Street due to the difficulty of turning around on the one-way street. It's best to choose the north gate parking lot exit for your location. Those sensitive to noise should avoid guesthouses facing the street, as the night market stalls and milk tea shops downstairs may be open until the early hours, and there may be constant noise from people outside your window. While there are many shared bikes, some popular spots will be empty before 8 AM. If you're in a hurry, it's recommended to walk to Huachang Road (the main road) in advance to hail a taxi.

Blogger's Summary

Within a two-kilometer radius of the four major transportation hubs, I highly recommend that those arriving in Zhangjiagang at night stay near the South Square of the high-speed rail station towards Tangqiao Town; those catching early morning flights stay on Xinyuan Road east of the transport station; those taking early morning rural buses stay on the southwest side of the transport center; and those staying overnight in the city center or planning to take the subway in the future can enjoy views of Huachang Road and Yangshe Old Street. In all areas, I suggest prioritizing rooms facing away from the main road and the railway, and the higher the floor, the better. Zhangjiagang is not large; staying in the right area will make catching the bus or train much easier in the morning.

Useful Tips List

1. If it's past 11 p.m., prioritize taxis near the high-speed rail station, as taxis from the city center to the high-speed rail station may be more expensive and there are fewer taxis available at night.

Second, for any hotel that says "three minutes walk to the station", check the map first to confirm whether it is separated by railway tracks or closed auxiliary roads. Straight-line distance does not represent walking distance.

Third, choose hard-shell suitcases with universal wheels whenever possible. In some older areas of Zhangjiagang, the sidewalks have curbs, making it difficult to drag soft-shell suitcases.

4. The first and last train times may be slightly adjusted before and after holidays. Please check the official mini-program or station announcement the night before departure.
