Avoid these Jiaxing accommodation pitfalls | Locals' firsthand experience: Avoid Yuehe and Xitang, choose these 5 areas instead

In Jiaxing, if travel guides tell you to stay in Yuehe, Xitang, or Nanhu Lakeside, it's basically like telling you to get stuck in a lane and listen to electronic music from a bar all night.

I've lived in Jiaxing for over five years and traveled between different areas of the city countless times. Jiaxing's real advantages are its small urban area, cheap taxis, and slow pace of life. When choosing accommodation, it's best to look for places where locals can easily find places to eat late-night snacks, take walks, and park, rather than those trendy "Instagrammable" guesthouses near tourist attractions.

Jiaxing currently does not have a comprehensive subway network, and the tram system only covers some main roads. Therefore, the times mentioned below will mainly be based on taking a taxi – which is also the most common mode of transportation for locals.

Three accommodation areas that are touted as amazing by travel guides, but locals never stay overnight there.

Let's start with the Yuehe Historical District and the surrounding guesthouses. The idea of "living by the water" sounds romantic, but in reality, the bar street's bass can be deafening until the wee hours, and the old houses have virtually no soundproofing. During the day, it's so crowded with tourists you can barely move; at night, the smell of alcohol and the cacophony of people make it unsettling for women to walk alone in the alleys. Even worse, parking is extremely scarce. On holidays, it takes half an hour to get in and another half hour to get out. While it seems close to Nanhu Lake, during peak hours, crossing Jianguo Road and Hexing Road can leave you completely stuck in traffic.

Let's talk about the riverside guesthouses in Xitang Ancient Town. Many travel guides only show you the riverside terraces, ignoring the damp rooms, mosquitoes, and the bars that play music until the early hours on weekends. It's over 30 kilometers from Jiaxing city center; taking a taxi back at night is expensive and difficult, and the parking lot is outside the scenic area—dragging your luggage on the cobblestone streets will wear out your wheels. Locals might visit during the day, but nobody stays there.

Finally, there are the "lake view hotels" around the Nanhu Scenic Area. Many rooms don't actually have a lake view, while those that do are overpriced. The area is deserted at night, and you have to go to Nanhu Tiandi or even further to eat. During holidays, there are often temporary traffic restrictions in the area, making it impossible to get in by taxi, and parking is a nightmare. To put it bluntly, you're paying mid-to-high-end prices for something that "looks close," but in reality, it's more convenient to stay in a secondary core area than to go to Yuehe or Zicheng.

The area around Linggongtang Road in Nanhu New District is suitable for a family road trip with children; avoid the crowded lakeside area.

This area is a residential area that locals would choose. The communities are new, there are many greenways, and it's pleasant to take a walk in the evening. It's suitable for families with children, road trips, and people who prefer a quiet environment, especially tourists who aren't rushing to see the sights and want a more spacious stay. It takes about 10 to 12 minutes by taxi to the core area of Nanhu and about 15 minutes to Yuehe. There are also trams and buses, but taking a taxi is the most convenient option.

There are plenty of restaurants nearby, including noodle shops, local cuisine, and restaurants near shopping malls, with prices ranging from a few dozen yuan per person for breakfast to around a hundred yuan for a full meal. Returning to the hotel late at night is safe; the residential area has good streetlights and frequent security patrols, and you can still see people jogging near the Linggongtang Greenway after 11 pm. Parking is much better than in the old town; most hotels have underground parking, and paid street parking spaces are relatively easy to find.

Xiuzhou District Jiangnan Mall commercial area: Suitable for young people to have late-night snacks, lively but not noisy.

This place is convenient and lively, but not as chaotic as a tourist attraction. It's suitable for young couples, students, and those on a budget who need food and drinks right downstairs. It's about a 15-minute taxi ride to Yuehe, about 18 minutes to Nanhu, and about 25 minutes to Jiaxing South Railway Station. The area is lively at night, with convenience stores, barbecue shops, and milk tea shops staying open late, so you can keep company on your way back to the hotel.

There are plenty of restaurants nearby; the mall's basement and food street could easily feed you for three days straight without repeating a single dish, and you can eat your fill for just a few dozen yuan per person. The area is relatively safe late at night, thanks to the presence of nighttime shoppers and security guards. The parking complex has ample spaces, but there can be queues at the entrance during weekend evening rush hours, so it's advisable to avoid the peak entry and exit times around 7 or 8 pm.

University area in Canal New Area: Suitable for students and foodies, affordable and safe.

The area around Jiaxing University's Yuexiu campus is a true "local food paradise," with many long-established restaurants and snack stalls, making it suitable for students, those on a budget, or independent travelers needing to stay in the city for a few days. It's about a 12-15 minute taxi ride to Yuehe, about 15 minutes to Nanhu, and just a few minutes to the Yaohan shopping district. There are no tourist-endorsed prices here, and accommodations are mainly budget and mid-range.

Food options are plentiful: shumai, zongzi, noodle shops, and late-night food stalls are all readily available, and you can eat your fill for just a few dozen yuan per person. Returning to the hotel late at night is relatively safe, as many university students return late and businesses close late. However, the alleys in older residential areas are dark, so it's recommended to choose a hotel facing the street. Parking is a weakness; the roads are narrow, and many are older residential areas, so driving is not recommended. Hotel parking spaces are also limited, so it's best to check in advance.

Science and Technology City and Jiaxing South Railway Station: Suitable for high-speed rail transfers, allowing for late arrivals and early departures without hassle.

If you arrive late by high-speed rail and leave the next morning, or if you are on a business trip, staying near Jiaxing South Railway Station is the best option. You don't need to spend extra money on taxis just to be "close to attractions." It takes about 20 minutes by taxi to Nanhu and about 25 minutes to Yuehe, but only 5 to 10 minutes to the South Railway Station, making it very convenient to catch an early high-speed rail.

The surrounding area mainly offers chain fast food and casual dining options, with limited choices in the evening, making it more suitable for those who aren't particularly fond of late-night snacks. Safety is good late at night; the new town area has wide roads and numerous surveillance cameras, but it's rather quiet and deserted, so women traveling alone should try to go in groups. Parking is excellent; most hotels have large parking lots, making car rentals or self-driving very convenient.

Xiangjiadang Tourist Resort: Ideal for family vacations, don't stay inside Xitang anymore.

If you're looking for a place with water, greenery, and a quiet spot to spend the night, Xiangjiadang is more to the liking of locals than Xitang Ancient Town. It's suitable for family vacations, road trips, and those seeking a peaceful escape from the crowds. It's about a 25-30 minute taxi ride from Nanhu or Yuehe in Jiaxing city center. If you're already going to Jiashan or Xitang, it's conveniently located along the way, taking about half an hour.

There are farmhouses and resort hotels along the lake, offering local cuisine at mid-range prices. While evening options are limited, the area is quiet. The resort is gated and very safe. However, the roads outside are dark, so walking late at night is not recommended. Parking is very convenient with ample spaces, making it ideal for families to explore at a leisurely pace.

In conclusion

1. Don't stay in the Moon River area, no matter how beautiful the photos are; 2. Xitang is suitable for a day trip. If you must stay overnight, choose a chain hotel outside the scenic area. You'll get double the sleep quality and save money.

Third, taxis in Jiaxing city are really inexpensive; don't force the "subway-adjacent" mentality. Fourth, self-driving tourists should avoid the old city area; parking is readily available in Nanhu New Area, Xiuzhou business district, and Xiangjiadang, saving you enough time to visit another place.

5. If you are only staying one night to catch the high-speed train, stay near Jiaxing South Station and don't risk getting stuck in traffic for half an hour just to experience the "attraction atmosphere".
