Solo Trip to Xuzhou: A Safety Checklist for 3 Days 2 Nights Solo Travel + Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Accommodation, Food, and Photography (Blogger's Personal Experience)

On my third solo trip to Xuzhou, I finally stopped booking accommodation on the east side of the train station. The alleys there are dark and crowded with electric bikes in the early morning, making it unfriendly to solo travelers. I switched areas, and the sense of security and relaxation throughout the trip was immediately different. This 3-day, 2-night solo travel guide to Xuzhou doesn't list tourist attractions; it only addresses how to stay, eat, take photos, and find travel companions when traveling alone.

1. Personal experience to avoid pitfalls: Living in the right area doubles your sense of security.

Xuzhou's main urban area isn't large, but the nighttime experience varies greatly depending on the area where you stay. Based on my experience, staying near the east bank of Yunlong Lake, the Hubushan-Huilongwo area, or along the Pengcheng Square subway line, still allows for pedestrian traffic even after 10 PM. Convenience stores, pharmacies, and bus stops are all within walking distance, and you don't have to navigate through backstreets to get back to your guesthouse. Mid-range chain hotels or well-reviewed design guesthouses are both good options; you can find quiet rooms for around 100 RMB per person.

I previously had a bad experience staying at a budget hotel on the east side of the train station. It was convenient during the day, but at night, the mix of electric bikes and constant soliciting on the roadside made me unconsciously clutch my phone when walking alone at night. Later, I moved to a place near Huilongwo and discovered that Xuzhou's nights can be very relaxing. If your budget only allows for budget options, prioritize chain hotels within a 5-minute walk of a subway station, rather than guesthouses in old residential buildings without a reception desk.

II. No more awkward dining alone: This ordering method understands you better than the menu.

Many old restaurants in Xuzhou serve generous portions, so it's easy to order too much if you're dining alone using the standard menu. For breakfast, head to Jianzigu or Fengchu Street; a bowl of "sha ta tang" (a type of soup) with pan-fried buns or steamed dumplings will fill you up for just a few dozen yuan per person. At a braised pork shop, just say "one meat dish, two vegetable dishes, and rice," and they'll pour the sauce over you and mix it in—no need to look at the whole menu. At a rice noodle shop, saying "a small bowl with an egg" is the safest bet; the owner will assume you're dining alone.

If you're craving barbecue at night, don't order a set meal. Just get individual skewers of beef tendon, beef brisket, green peppers, and bread slices, along with a bowl of hand-pulled noodles—it'll be just right and won't go to waste. Around Huilongwo and Jianzigu, choose established street-side shops; they have a more authentic local feel than chain stores in shopping malls. It's perfectly normal to sit alone at a small table against the wall or share a large table; just focus on your food, and no one will find it strange.

The only thing to note is that some older restaurants sell their soup or cold dishes by the portion. If you can't finish it all, you can ask in advance, "Can I have a smaller portion?" Most of the aunties will smile and give you a smaller bowl. I've personally found that ordering this way is much more convenient than using review apps.

3. Take photos without asking for help: Set up your phone in these positions

When taking photos alone, the biggest fear is handing your phone to a stranger, which is both awkward and prone to producing blurry images. Before 8 a.m., there are fewer people on the Metasequoia Trail on the East Road of Yunlong Lake. Lean your phone against the wooden railing or tree stump and use a low angle to capture reflections. In the Qingzhuan Alley of Huilongwo, fix an octopus-shaped tripod to a crack in the stone slabs or on top of a trash can. Before 9 a.m., before other tourists arrive, it's easy to capture clean depth of field.

At a corner on the east side of the ancient residences in Hubu Mountain, there are red lanterns and old wooden doors; you can easily capture the ancient charm by leaning your phone at an angle. The backlighting in the courtyard of the Xuzhou Museum is perfect for silhouette shots. In the underwater terracotta warrior exhibition hall of the Han Culture Scenic Area, use an ultra-wide-angle lens to shoot from a low angle; there are fewer people, and the photos turn out great. Remember to bring a Bluetooth shutter release; take continuous shots and then choose the best ones to avoid having strangers take your picture.

IV. Reliable Group Partners: Only Meet in Public Areas During the Day

For efficient visits to Han Dynasty tombs, Yaowan, or Malingshan, you can book a day tour in advance on a reputable travel platform. Choose a city pick-up and drop-off package that can be booked by one person. These tours usually meet and disembark at Yunlong Lake or Pengcheng Square, and are generally safe. If you stay in a hostel, you can meet other solo travelers on the common area's travel buddy board, but only for daytime sightseeing, not for bars or late-night snacks.

Any online posts or private messages in the comments section that mention "departing at night," "taking you along the way via back roads," or "paying a deposit to reserve a spot" will be rejected outright. Public transportation and tourist lines from Xuzhou's main urban area to Jiawang, Xinyi, and other places are convenient. This service is unisex; we do not share unlicensed taxis or ridesharing without a platform order.

V. 10 Safety Checklist for Solo Travelers (Applicable to both men and women)

1. After checking in, check the fire exits first, lock the door and hang the security chain. If someone knocks, check the peephole first. 2. After 9 PM, only walk along well-lit areas such as the east bank of Yunlong Lake, Pengcheng Square, and the main street of Hubushan. 3. When taking a taxi, share the license plate number and itinerary with friends and family in real time, and sit in the back seat. 4. Keep your power bank at least 80% charged and keep your phone with you at all times. 5. If you are dining alone, do not drink from your cup after leaving your seat.

6. Keep cash and identification documents separate; carry a small bag across your body or on your chest. 7. Avoid undeveloped lakesides, abandoned factories, or parks late at night. 8. Only book group tours through online platforms; only arrange to meet up with others at public attractions during the day. 9. If a stranger offers to "help" you find your way, simply say "my friend is waiting" and leave naturally. 10. Send your location to family or friends before bed each night; no need to provide details.

VI. Blogger's Summary and Travel Tips

Xuzhou is actually very friendly to solo travelers. As long as you stay in the right area and avoid the alleys late at night, you can leisurely visit museums, eat braised pork, and take photos of Yunlong Lake all by yourself. For a 3-day, 2-night trip, you don't need to rush to all the attractions. Allocate half a day each to Hudong Road, Huilongwo, and the Han Culture Scenic Area, and leave the rest for leisurely strolls around the city.

Carry a pack of tissues, a small bottle of water, and a folding umbrella; use your phone to scan a QR code to ride the subway; remember the landmarks Huilongwo and Pengcheng Square to avoid drivers taking detours. This list is suitable for autumn, winter, and early spring; remember sunscreen and mosquito repellent in summer.

If it's your first time traveling alone in Xuzhou, I suggest using Huilongwo as the starting point for your daily route. To the north is Pengcheng Square, and to the south is Yunlong Lake, which will give you a clearer sense of direction.
