Tangshan 3.6km | This underrated Citywalk route is so amazing, even the local market looks like a movie set (blogger personally tested and avoided the pitfalls).

This was my third trip to Tangshan. I gave up driving and booked a hotel near Peirenli. I walked along Longze South Road and Wenhua Road to the Earthquake Memorial Square. This main route is only 3.6 kilometers long, plus two side roads, it's about 4.7 kilometers. After returning, I deleted two unusable photos and kept this list, organized by walking time, camera angle, and reasons to stop.

Pei Ren Li Historical and Cultural District: Red brick arched windows and old girls' school building (0-0.7km, about 10 minutes)

Starting from the east entrance of Peiren Lane, the former site of Peiren Girls' High School (built in 1927) comes into view first. Between 8:30 and 9:00 in the morning, the sun casts sharp shadows and bright light on the red brick walls and arched windows. I visited once in the afternoon, and the light had already subsided, so I suggest starting here.

The blogger's camera position: under the second locust tree on the east side of the old teaching building, using a medium-telephoto lens to frame the arched windows and the old bicycle at the base of the wall, with sycamore leaves in the foreground. Worth stopping for 5 minutes: the building retains traces of cement repairs from different eras, serving as a physical specimen of modern women's education in Tangshan, more interesting than the reconstructed neighborhood. In the neighborhood, a used bookstore and café has folding chairs placed at the entrance in the morning, where locals chat about the past of Kailuan.

From Tangshan Museum to Longze South Road: Take a photo of the old and new buildings side by side under the flagpole on the central axis (0.7-1.5km, about 12 minutes).

Heading north along Longze South Road, the goldenrain trees on both sides provide intermittent shade. The former Tangshan Museum has the dignified feel of an exhibition building from the 1960s. The square is not large but is symmetrical along the central axis. Posters for shadow puppet exhibitions are often displayed on the west side of the main entrance, and the red and green color scheme is suitable as a background.

The blogger's camera position: three meters west of the flagpole, lowered to shoot upwards along the central axis, allowing the traces of the old factory buildings to be framed alongside the new residential buildings behind them. Worth stopping for 5 minutes: the permanent exhibition "Three Flowers of Eastern Hebei" inside the museum features handcrafted tools and videos by veteran artisans; the intricate details of the shadow puppet carving are easily missed. Turn right after exiting the museum and walk along the west side of Longze South Road; the old wall is covered in ivy, reaching its deepest layer around 5 PM.

Fork in the road 1: Qiaotun Old Street and the west entrance of the vegetable market (approximately 0.6km one way, about 16 minutes round trip)

Turn into the small alley on the north side of the museum; no navigation is needed. The first two times I went astray and ended up in a residential area, I found my way when I saw the old "Qiaotun" utility pole. The branch lines are short but dense: old workshop walls, two or three vintage clothing stores, a semi-basement vinyl record store, and a community vegetable market that only operates in the morning and afternoon.

The blogger's camera position: under the sunshade at the west entrance of the market, using a telephoto lens to compress the crowds picking vegetables and the distant factory chimneys. Worth stopping for 5 minutes: almost no tourists, vendors selling lamb offal wiping their scales, shoe repair stalls sharing a wall with vintage clothing stores, and people always dozing on small stools in front of the vinyl record store, like a movie set.

Side trip tips: Vintage clothing stores and vinyl record stores are mostly located in the latter half of the street and only open after 2 PM; try to arrive at the wet market before 11:30 AM, as the whole street will suddenly become quiet after the market closes in the afternoon.

Fenghuangshan Park and the corner of Wenhua Road Community Farmers Market (1.5-2.8km, approximately 18 minutes)

Turn back west onto Longze South Road and enter through the east gate of Phoenix Mountain Park. From Phoenix Pavilion, the highest point on Phoenix Mountain, you can see the Tangshan city skyline. It's recommended to use a phone with 2x zoom; a wide-angle lens will blur the tall buildings. From the southeast corner of Phoenix Pavilion, the red rooftops of old residential buildings in the foreground and the distant outline of Kailuan Industrial Park blend into the same frame. It's worth stopping for 5 minutes: the mountain isn't high; after seven or eight minutes at the top, the city suddenly has layers of foreground, middle ground, and background, and many old photos of Tangshan are taken from this perspective.

Exiting from the south gate of the park, the corner near the intersection of Wenhua Road and Meiyi Road is where I lingered the longest along the entire route. The camera was positioned at the southeast corner of the intersection, during the evening rush hour for grocery shopping. The brown reflection of the glass covers of the delicatessens and the shadows of pedestrians mingled, revealing the softest folds of this northern industrial city.

Branch Road 2: Xishan Road cluster of independent bookstores and vinyl record shops (approximately 0.8km one way, about 20 minutes round trip)

Exiting from the south gate of the park, you can turn onto the Xishan Road branch. Several independent bookstores are located in the ground floor shops of residential buildings from the 1980s, without large signs, but with newly arrived book catalogs posted on the glass; next to them, there is an old piano displayed in front of a coffee shop; further west, there is a vinyl record store that is only open in the afternoon, with old Tangshan brand records displayed in the window.

Blogger's camera angle: Two meters in front of the bookstore's glass window. Wait for someone to walk by before pressing the shutter; the warm light, bookshelves, and shadows overlap. Worth stopping for 5 minutes: This isn't a planned cultural and creative park; it's a spontaneously grown cultural corner. The Tangshan local history and industrial history books on the shelves are rarely seen all at once outside. Side routes to avoid: Some shops are closed Mondays and Tuesdays; don't just go to one particular shop. The coffee is more about the atmosphere, and the average price is moderate.

Earthquake Memorial Square and Xinhua Road Pocket Park (2.8-3.6km, approximately 12 minutes)

The final stretch of the main route leads west to the Earthquake Memorial Square. At dusk, the memorial pillars cast long shadows on the ground. Standing in the southeast corner, with the memorial pillars in the foreground and the high-rises of the Xinhua Road commercial district in the background, the tension between old and new is very much a Tangshan experience. The camera was positioned at a low angle in the southeast corner of the memorial, waiting for cyclists to pass before taking the picture. It's worth stopping for 5 minutes: the square isn't just a tourist spot, but a place to understand how Tangshan rebuilt order from ruins; in the evening, there are kite flyers and rollerblading teenagers, adding a relaxed, everyday feel.

Heading east from the square into the pocket park along Xinhua Road, you'll find scattered used bookstores near the tree-lined benches. The light is best after 4 PM in autumn, perfect for reviewing photos. The main route is about 3.6 kilometers long, and with the two branch routes, it's about 4.7 kilometers. A leisurely walk and photography session should take about three and a half hours.

Practical advice: Choose shoes with soft soles, as the brick surfaces on Wenhua Road and Qiaotun Old Street are uneven; start from Peirenli before 9:00 AM, enter Qiaotun Vegetable Market at 11:30 AM, walk the Xishan Road branch after 2:00 PM, and finish at the Monument Square in the evening; autumn is the best time, with the golden leaves of Phoenix Mountain at the end of October to the beginning of November; bring one camera and one lens, a telephoto lens is more practical than a wide-angle lens; it is recommended to wipe the lens after completing the branch route.
