愚园路历史文化风貌区

The total land area of Yuyuan Road Historical and Cultural Scenic Area is about 223 hectares. The area features pleasant street scales, rich alley spaces along the roads, diverse architectural types and varied landscapes. It has not only garden residences, new-style lilongs and apartments of various styles, but also educational building complexes that integrate Chinese and Western elements, fully embodying Shanghai-style culture and historical context. Meanwhile, the route is characterized by clustered urban renewal, covering different types of urban renewal cases in the past decade. Qishan Village: Lane 1032, Yuyuan Road, it is listed in the fourth batch of Excellent Historical Buildings. From 1925 to 1931, 70 3-storey Chinese-Western style buildings were jointly constructed by real estate developers including the American-owned China Development Corporation and Central Trust of China. Together with the 5 4-storey garden villas named Dongyuan Bieye built in 1924, there are 75 buildings in total, with a total floor area of about 14,000 square meters. Former Residence of Wang Boqun: No. 31, Lane 1136, Yuyuan Road (now Changning District Children's Palace), it is a municipal cultural relic protection unit and listed in the first batch of Excellent Historical Buildings. This Gothic castle-style building was completed in 1934, covering an area of 10.78 mu. The main building has a floor area of about 2,100 square meters. Its construction lasted 4 years and cost 300,000 silver dollars. Currently, only the building exterior and the lawn garden are open to visitors. Marble Pavilion in Zhongshan Park: No. 780, Changning Road, it is listed in the third batch of Excellent Historical Buildings, located inside Zhongshan Park. Donated by expatriate Mrs. Eisler, this marble pavilion was built in 1935. Its columns, stone steps, floor and top pergola are all made of white marble. Changning Campus of East China University of Political Science and Law: No. 1575, Wanhangdu Road, it is a national key cultural relic protection unit and listed in the second batch of Excellent Historical Buildings. It was originally designed by Atkinson & Dallas Architects and British-owned ELDES Co., Ltd. Most of its buildings are of Chinese-Western integrated style and are well preserved now. Founded in 1879, it was named "St. John's College" at first, and later renamed St. John's University. In 1952, East China Institute of Political Science and Law was established on the former site, and it was renamed East China University of Political Science and Law in 2007. Despite years of changes, the spatial layout of the St. John's University era is still preserved on campus, making it a typical case of modern Chinese-Western integrated architectural style.
