48-Hour Walking Tour of Guiyang | A Weekend Special Forces' Tight-Fit Itinerary from the City Center to Qingyan Ancient Town

Guiyang's mountainous terrain makes it unsuitable for leisurely strolls; instead, it's best to explore its core experiences in one go over a two-day, one-night high-density itinerary.

Day 1: A high-density connection in the core area of the old city, starting with a bowl of Changwang noodles.

Upon arriving in Guiyang, whether entering the old city from the North Railway Station or the airport, you can prioritize taking Metro Line 1 to the "Fenshuichi" or "Zhongshan West Road" area. After settling in, grab a bite to eat: a bowl of Changwang noodles with crispy pork belly and mung bean sprouts is the quickest way to start your Guiyang breakfast. Then walk to Wenchang Pavilion, and then along Diantai Street and Shengfu Road. This section connects the old city wall, Republican-era architecture, and local community life, offering more information than a single tourist attraction. Guiyang's old city has many underground passages; when using walking navigation, pay attention to switching between levels to avoid getting lost at the same intersection.

For lunch, choose between "Silk Doll" and "Sour Soup Beef". Silk Doll is made by wrapping over ten kinds of cold dishes in thin dough wrappers, with the sour soup dipping sauce being the key. Sour Soup Beef, on the other hand, features beef with skin cooked in a fermented sour broth, perfect for replenishing energy. For groups of two or more, Sour Soup Beef is the preferred choice; for singles, Silk Doll offers more flexibility. After lunch, take a short rest to avoid prolonged outdoor walking during the hottest part of the day. If there's a rain shower, the old town's arcades and underpasses offer temporary shelter.

In the afternoon, using Jiaxiu Tower as the central point, first visit Jiaxiu Tower, Cuiwei Garden, and Fuyu Bridge, then walk along the Nanming River to Zhucheng Square. It is recommended to arrive around 4 pm, take photos of Jiaxiu Tower during the day, and then return once the lights come on to get both day and night views.

Enter Qingyun Market before 6 PM. Enjoy tofu balls, grilled tofu, crispy duck, and ice jelly along the way; no need to stick to one particular shop. After dark, leave Qingyun Market and head to the Jiaxiu Tower riverside to find a good spot for the night view; or move on to Huaguoyuan Wetland Park to take panoramic photos of the "White House" and the Twin Towers from the outside, without needing to enter the commercial complex. Day 1's itinerary mainly relies on the subway and walking, with no long-distance stops outside the area.

Day 2: Qingyan Ancient Town and Huaxi Wetland, ending with a suburban route.

The second day, it's better to arrive early than late. Take the intercity high-speed rail or tourist bus from the city center to Qingyan Ancient Town; the journey takes about an hour. Try to leave before 8:00 AM. Upon arrival, first climb the ancient city wall for a panoramic view, then follow the main street to the Zhuangyuan Mansion, Wanshou Palace, and back streets. The stone-paved back streets are the best for taking photos; in the morning, there are fewer people and the light is at an angle, making it ideal for quick shots.

The food options in Qingyan are more concentrated than in the city center. Braised pig's feet, rice cake porridge, rose-flavored ice jelly, and chicken chili are all worth trying. The general rule is to avoid stopping at the shops right at the city gate; walk two or three alleys inwards and choose smaller shops frequented by locals – the quality is more consistent. You can explore the core area in about two hours by walking and eating your way through. The slopes inside Qingyan Ancient Town aren't steep, but the cobblestone streets are narrow, so wearing non-slip shoes is more important than looking at the surface. Return seats on weekend tourist buses are scarce, so check the return departure point upon arrival to avoid waiting for the last bus.

Return to Huaxi in the afternoon and choose a stretch of walking or cycling along the Shili River Beach or in Huaxi Park. The karst landscape, wetlands, and rice paddies stretch out in a continuous panorama, allowing you to quickly switch from the pace of the ancient town to natural scenery. If the weather is bad or you're feeling tired, you can skip Huaxi and head straight back to the city to visit Qianling Mountain Park: see the macaques, hike the mountain trails, and visit Hongfu Temple. However, be sure to keep your plastic bags and food safe to avoid the monkeys stealing your food. Allow sufficient time for the return trip to the North Station or airport via Metro Line 1. Finish your trip before evening and avoid meals that require queuing.

If you're not particularly interested in the ancient town, you can switch Day 2 to a more in-depth exploration of the old city: In the morning, visit Qianling Mountain Park; at noon, sample traditional Guiyang snacks along Bageyan Road, Humen Lane, and Liuguangmen; in the afternoon, visit the Guizhou Provincial Museum or Zhongshuge Bookstore; and finally conclude your day at Guanshanhu Park. This route focuses on indoor areas and parks, making it more suitable for travelers who need to reduce the intensity of their activities when the weather is bad.

Useful Tip 1: Transportation Saving Card

Guiyang Metro supports one-day passes and QR codes for travel. For travel within the city, Metro Lines 1 and 2 are preferred and more cost-effective than single-trip tickets. To get to Qingyan, you can take the Ring Express Railway or the tourist line, and check the last train in advance. For short-distance transfers, use ride-hailing platforms to choose carpooling or discounted models, which is more time-saving and cheaper than hailing a taxi on the street.

Useful Tip 2: Packing List

For a two-day trip, bring only a lightweight backpack and non-slip sneakers, as Guiyang has many slopes and the cobblestone streets are slippery in the rain. A foldable raincoat or lightweight umbrella, a power bank, your ID card, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a small amount of cash are sufficient. Bringing a rolling suitcase is not recommended, as it will significantly slow down your pace in the old town and ancient villages.

Practical Tip 3: Avoiding Queues

For popular dishes like Changwang noodles and Siwawa (a type of steamed bun), avoid peak meal times; it's faster to get a seat before 11 am or after 2 pm. At Qingyun Market, take photos before 6 pm, as the peak queuing time is after 7 pm. Jiaxiu Tower lights up around 7:30 pm, so arrive at the riverbank 15 minutes early to secure a good spot. For Qingyan Ancient Town, be sure to leave before 8 am on weekends, and the earlier the better on holidays, otherwise you'll be pushed along by the crowds when climbing the city wall and exploring the back streets.
