A 7-Day Slow-Paced Tour of the Li River: A Deep Dive into Guilin for Parents and Children (7 Days 6 Nights)

The essence of Guilin lies not in rushing to see all the sights, but in slowing down. This itinerary prioritizes "less overnight stays, less queuing, and less uphill climbing," with only 2-3 key locations planned per day for the following 7 days and 6 nights. It is suitable for families traveling with parents or children, as well as retirees. The itinerary defaults to accommodations in both Guilin city and Yangshuo to minimize frequent overnight stays.

Day 1 Arrival in Guilin: Elephant Trunk Hill and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area

Upon arrival in the afternoon, check into your hotel first. We recommend checking into the area around Elephant Trunk Hill Park or Shizijie (Cross Street). Our first stop is Elephant Trunk Hill Park. Walk from the Binjiang Road entrance along the riverside path to the viewing platform; the round trip takes about 1.5 hours and is entirely flat. In the evening, walk to the Shanhu section of the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area to see the Sun and Moon Twin Towers illuminated. You won't feel tired without taking a boat tour. Have dinner on Zhengyang Road or in Dongxi Lane, focusing on light and refreshing dishes. Check airport bus or high-speed rail station shuttle schedules in advance using the "Guilin Travel Website" to avoid waiting on-site.

Day 2: Leisurely stroll through the old town: Jingjiang Prince's City, East and West Alleys, and Diecai Mountain

In the morning, visit Jingjiang Prince City, focusing on Duxiu Peak and the city wall. The park is mostly shaded, and the steep sections of the mountain can be skipped. Have lunch in Dongxi Lane, followed by a 1-2 hour rest to avoid the midday sun. After 3:00 PM, head to Diecai Mountain. Just walk to the Wind Cave platform; the view is sufficient for considering the Li River and the city. No need to climb to the top. The total walking distance for the day is approximately 8000 steps, manageable for the elderly and children.

Day 3-Day 4: Choose one of two options for the suburbs: a leisurely tour of an old town or a natural tour of hot springs.

For the third and fourth days, it's recommended to choose only one side route; don't try to do too many. For both side routes, it's essential to go to bed early the night before and depart that morning to ensure you reach the core area before noon.

Option A "Slow Route through the Ancient Towns": Day 3: Depart from Guilin city to Daxu Ancient Town, walking along the old streets and the Li River pier. In the afternoon, walk along the greenway to Maozhou Island ferry terminal, a round trip of approximately 2 hours. Overnight in Daxu or return to Guilin. Day 4: Take a bus from Guilin to Xingping Ancient Town, focusing on the riverside walkway from Xingping pier to Nine Horses Mountain. The slope is gentle, suitable for the elderly and children. If you don't want to walk, you can choose an electric raft at Xingping pier, ensuring your shoes stay dry. Return to Yangshuo in the evening for overnight accommodation.

Option B, "Hot Spring Nature Route": Day 3: Travel from Guilin to Longsheng, first visiting Ping'an Village in the Longji Rice Terraces. Walk only the stone path between the village and the viewing platform, without going deeper into the hike. Overnight at the Longsheng Hot Spring Resort. Day 4: In the morning, take a leisurely walk along the stream trail in the Hot Spring Forest Park. In the afternoon, soak in the hot springs. Before 5:00 PM, return to Guilin by bus or head directly to Yangshuo. This route is suitable for the rainy season or when the weather turns cool; the hot springs can relieve leg fatigue from continuous travel.

Day 5 Yangshuo Yulong River: A slower pace of life, using walking trails instead of bamboo rafts.

After checking into your hotel in Yangshuo, head to the Yulong River Trail in the morning. It's recommended to enter from near Jima Wharf and walk towards Jiuxian. There are no roads for motor vehicles along the way, the trail is gentle, and the views of rice paddies and karst peaks are expansive. You can turn back whenever you get tired. Return to your hotel to rest in the afternoon, and in the evening, explore the outskirts of West Street, avoiding the most crowded main street. No bamboo rafting is arranged for the day to reduce the risk of queuing and slippery surfaces.

Day 6 Silver Cave and Ten-Mile Gallery: Choose one between karst caves and pastoral scenery.

In the morning, visit Silver Cave. The path inside the cave is slippery but not steep, and the entire journey takes about an hour, making it suitable for the elderly and children. If you're not interested in caves, you can opt for cycling along the Ten-Mile Gallery or taking the scenic electric sightseeing bus to see only the outer perimeter of Moon Hill. In the afternoon, return to Yangshuo County and stroll along the Li River path while packing your luggage. If you already walked the Xingping section of the river the previous day, this section can be completed in just 10 minutes; there's no need to repeat it.

Day 7: Final activities before departure: Free time in Yangshuo Park or Guilin city.

In the morning, depending on your return travel schedule, you can choose to take a leisurely stroll in Yangshuo Park, or return to Guilin city early and finish your day with tea near Ronghu Lake. No new attractions are planned, allowing ample time for flexibility. If departing from Guilin Airport or the high-speed rail station, it is recommended to allow at least 3 hours for your return journey, and try to avoid Monday morning rush hour.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

In the city, the preferred routes are the Elephant Trunk Hill Riverside Trail, the Shanhu Lake shoreline, and the section from the Flower Bridge in Qixing Park to Camel Hill. In Yangshuo, the preferred routes are the Yulong River from Jima to Jiuxian section and the Xingping Riverside Trail. In Longsheng, only the Ping'an Village Viewing Platform and the Hot Spring Forest Park Creek Trail are recommended. These routes share common characteristics: stone or asphalt surfaces, a one-way distance of no more than 1.5 kilometers, no continuous ascent, and rest stops or shady spots along the way.

Local frequently used apps list

Use "Gaode Maps" or "Baidu Maps" for navigation; use "Moji Weather" or "Caiyun Weather" to check the weather, as Guilin's rainy season is unpredictable, so it's recommended to check the hourly forecast before heading out; use "Guilin Travel Network" for city buses and direct shuttle buses to scenic spots; use "Railway 12306" for long-distance bus tickets and high-speed rail tickets; use "Meituan" or "Dianping" to find restaurants and check their opening status; and use "Didi Chuxing" to hail a ride. All of these apps can be downloaded in advance from app stores.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Guilin's rainy season is concentrated from April to June, with frequent continuous rainfall, especially around the Dragon Boat Festival. During the rainy season, it's recommended to bring two pairs of shoes: one pair of quick-drying shoes and one pair of waterproof shoes. For clothing, choose a quick-drying T-shirt and a light waterproof jacket; cotton jeans are not recommended. From July to September, the dry season is relatively warm, but afternoon showers are still possible, so bring a folding umbrella and a sun hat. From October to March of the following year, there are large temperature differences between day and night; the elderly and children should layer their clothing with a long-sleeved base layer, a light down jacket, and a windproof jacket. Regardless of the season, it's generally cool inside the caves, so carrying a light jacket is always safe.
