A 7-Day Slow Travel Guide to Liuzhou: A Deep Dive into the Scenic Industrial City, Suitable for Seniors and Children

Liuzhou isn't a place for rushing from one tourist attraction to another. Instead, it's perfect for leisurely incorporating a bowl of snail rice noodles, a night cruise on the Liujiang River, and a karst park into your itinerary. This seven-day, six-night itinerary is designed around "two to three key destinations per day." Days 3 and 4 offer two suburban branches, allowing you to choose between an ancient town and a hot spring, depending on your group's physical condition.

Day 1 Arrival in Liuzhou, slow down by the river.

After checking in in the afternoon, there's no need to go far. In the evening, head to "Yaobu Ancient Town." This isn't a strictly traditional ancient town, but rather a riverside, antique-style street area, perfect for a stroll along the Liujiang River and enjoying views of Panlong Mountain Waterfall and the Confucius Temple at night. If your energy allows, you can take a "Hundred-Mile Liujiang River" cruise; the night section features concentrated lighting, quickly giving you a direct impression of Liuzhou's landscape. Dinner should consist mainly of light soup noodles or porridge to allow your stomach to adjust to the local humidity.

Day 2 Longtan Park and Industrial Memories

The morning is dedicated to Longtan Park. The park's karst peaks and lake reflect each other beautifully, and the lakeside path is gentle, suitable for strollers and seniors. The main attractions are the covered bridge, Mirror Lake, and distant views of Wohu Mountain; hiking is unnecessary. In the afternoon, visit the Liuzhou Industrial Museum, whose indoor exhibits tell the story of Liuzhou's development from machinery manufacturing to the automobile industry. Seniors are usually more interested, and children can also see old-fashioned machine tools and steam locomotives. In the evening, you can stroll around the Qingyun Market area, but avoid the crowds of the morning market.

Day 3-Day 4: Choose one of the two options: nearby or suburban.

For the next two days, it's recommended to choose only one branch and avoid trying to do too many. Branch A: Take the "Ancient Town Geological Route": Day 3: Head to Zhongdu Ancient Town in Luzhai. The old street and the banks of the Luojiang River preserve old wharves and arcade buildings. After lunch, enter Xiangqiao Karst National Geological Park to see natural bridges, caves, and underground rivers. The trails are generally gentle. Day 4: Enjoy a light hike in Lagou Nature Reserve or simply stroll through the forest area at the entrance. Return to Liuzhou city in the afternoon to rest.

Branch B takes the "Hot Spring Forest Line": On Day 3, soak in the "Fenghuanghe Hot Spring" in the morning, and in the afternoon, visit the "Baipeng Jiuhushan" area in Chengtuan Town to see the pastoral peaks and forests, which is suitable for taking photos and leisurely walks. On Day 4, go to "Junwu Forest Park" or "Huanjiang Riverside Avenue" for cycling and walking. Both have paved roads and gentle slopes, which are suitable for families and retirees.

Day 5: Sanjiang Dong Village, overnight stay in Chengyang Bazhai

The drive from Liuzhou city to Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County is quite long, so it's recommended to depart in the morning and arrive at "Chengyang Eight Villages" in the afternoon. The village complex consists of several Dong villages; the main attractions are the Chengyang Yongji Bridge and the riverside stone path, which can be explored at a leisurely pace without needing to climb mountains. Staying within the scenic area or in the county town is fine. The area is quieter in the evening when the drum tower is lit up than during the day.

Day 6: Slow Travel in Danzhou Ancient Town

Before returning from Sanjiang, you can visit Danzhou Ancient Town. Located on a small island in the Rongjiang River, you need to take a ferry to the island. There are no motor vehicles on the island, and the cobblestone streets are flat. The pomelo groves and old houses are perfect for a leisurely stroll. In the afternoon, return to Sanjiang County and walk along the Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge and Moon Street to conclude your visit to the ethnic minority area.

Day 7: City wrap-up before returning home

Upon returning to Liuzhou city, choose either "Liuhou Park" or "Liuzhou Museum" in the morning. Liuhou Park contains cultural relics related to Liu Zongyuan, with plenty of shade and smooth paths; the museum will supplement the exhibits on the history of the Dong ethnic group in the Sanjiang area and Liuzhou. Have a bowl of luosifen (river snail rice noodles) with no or little spice for lunch, then head to the train station or airport according to your return schedule.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

For routes within the city, prioritize the following: the lakeside section of Longtan Park, the waterfront promenade of Huanjiang Riverside Avenue, and the riverside promenade of Yaobu Ancient Town. For routes in the suburbs, prioritize the main tourist route of Xiangqiao Karst National Geological Park, the indoor and outdoor hot spring pools of Fenghuanghe Hot Spring, and the wooden boardwalk of Junwu Forest Park. For routes along the three rivers, prioritize the main street of Chengyang Bazhai and the island promenade of Danzhou Ancient Town. These routes share common features: a high percentage of paved surfaces, minimal elevation differences, and good shade.

List of frequently used local apps

Use Gaode or Baidu Maps for maps and navigation; Didi Chuxing for taxis; "Longcheng Citizen Cloud" for bus routes and reservations for some scenic spots; Dianping or Meituan for restaurant reviews; and 12306 for intercity train tickets. Most transactions in Liuzhou city support WeChat Pay or Alipay. Seniors can bind their family cards in advance to avoid the hassle of cash.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Liuzhou's rainy season is mostly from April to August, with noticeably hot and humid conditions. It's recommended to bring quick-drying short-sleeved shirts, a light jacket, and non-slip sneakers or sandals, and carry a lightweight raincoat. The dry season is from September to March of the following year, with significant temperature differences between day and night. Winters are damp and cold, so prepare a light down jacket, fleece inner layer, and a windproof jacket. From May to October, mosquito repellent is necessary for outdoor activities. Longtan Park, Chengyang Bazhai, and Danzhou have abundant vegetation, so it's advisable to apply mosquito repellent beforehand.
