Zhengzhou Hub Overnight Stay List | Tested 4 Transit Accommodation Areas Within 2 Kilometer (Avoiding Pitfalls for Early Morning Flights/Overnight Arrivals)
After being chased for fifty meters by a tout at the West Square of Zhengzhou East Railway Station, I decided to thoroughly understand this transit accommodation route. Zhengzhou is an indispensable overnight city in the national high-speed rail network, and many people, like me, have to make do with a few hours around the hub in order to catch an early morning flight or a high-speed train. The problem is, "making do" doesn't mean making a bad experience. This article doesn't recommend trendy hotels; it only describes four accommodation areas within 2 kilometers of the hub that I personally tested with my suitcase. Each area includes walking/taxi times, first and last train/bus references, and tips to avoid pitfalls.
1. Zhengzhou East Railway Station | Shangding Road area, south of the West Square: The most reliable area for catching the early morning high-speed train.
Within a 2-kilometer radius of Zhengzhou East Railway Station, the area truly within walking distance and not separated by elevated roads is the Shangding Road and Xinyi Road area south of the West Square. This area is home to numerous mid-range chain and serviced apartment hotels. It's about an 8-12 minute walk from the station via the ground-level connecting walkway, or a 5-minute taxi ride, although during peak hours, queues can be slower than walking. This area is suitable for those buying high-speed rail tickets around 7 AM, or travelers arriving late at night who don't want the hassle of navigating into the city center.
Reference for first and last train times: For Zhengzhou East Railway Station, the first train on Metro Line 1 heading towards the city center is around 6:00 AM, and the last train is around 11:00 PM. The last train on Line 5 (loop line) is around 10:30 PM to 11:00 PM. If you need to catch a high-speed train before 6:30 AM, it is recommended to stay near the south side of the West Square and not rely on the metro.
Key points to avoid: Some low-priced apartments on the north side of the East Square look cheap, but there's construction and dump trucks at night, and some buildings don't have elevators, so you have to cross an overpass to bring your luggage. When booking, make sure the window faces inwards from the building, not the railway line, otherwise the low-frequency noise from the high-speed trains entering and leaving the station will wake you up at 4 or 5 in the morning. Last time I caught the 7 o'clock high-speed train, it only took me 9 minutes to walk from the hotel across the connecting corridor to the entrance, and I even had time to buy a bowl of spicy soup to take on the train.
II. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport | Yingbin Avenue-Zhenxing Road Area: The preferred landing area for red-eye flights
There aren't many accommodations within 2 kilometers of Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport terminal. The most convenient option is near the intersection of Yingbin Avenue and Zhenxing Road. This area is about 1.5 to 2 kilometers from the terminal, making walking impractical, but almost every hotel offers free airport shuttle service, a 5 to 8-minute drive. If you land in the early morning, just contact them in advance. This is suitable for those taking red-eye flights to Zhengzhou or early morning flights the following day.
First and last bus reference: The last airport subway suburban line towards the city center runs from approximately 10 PM to 10:30 PM, and the first bus runs from approximately 6 AM. If you land after 10:30 PM, don't rely on the subway; it's more practical to contact your hotel for airport pickup. For flights before 7 AM, you also need to arrange airport transfers to avoid missing the first subway train.
Avoid these pitfalls: Be wary of people holding "accommodation" signs soliciting business at the station exit. Many of these locations are actually four or five kilometers away from the port area, and pick-up may be delayed or involve last-minute carpooling. When booking, check if it specifies "free pick-up and drop-off, no carpooling, and a waiting time of no more than 10 minutes." Try to choose a room facing away from the runway; north-facing windows can hear takeoff noise starting at 6 AM. Once, I landed at 2 AM and contacted a driver; the journey from the exit to the hotel check-in took less than 15 minutes, much more reassuring than taking an unlicensed taxi.
III. North Bus Station | Garden North Road Backstreet Area: Northbound buses travel more smoothly along the Yellow River.
Within a 2-kilometer radius of Zhengzhou North Bus Station, accommodations are concentrated in the ground-floor shops and apartment buildings of residential complexes along both sides of Huayuan North Road, especially in the backstreet buildings near Hongkang Road and Yingcai Street. These are about an 8-15 minute walk from the station, or a short taxi ride (starting fare), making them suitable for people planning to take an early morning long-distance bus to northern Henan the next day, or those planning an early morning trip to the Yellow River scenic area.
Reference for first and last bus times: Liuzhuang Station on Metro Line 2 is right next to the North Station. The first bus departs around 6:00 AM and the last bus departs around 11:00 PM. Most of the first buses from the North Bus Station depart between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM. If you live in this area, you can sleep until 6:00 AM and then walk there, which is more convenient than taking a taxi from the city center.
Avoid these pitfalls: Huayuan North Road experiences heavy traffic at night, making low-frequency noise from street-facing rooms very noticeable. Choose a high floor with windows facing the residential complex. Some guesthouses are hidden within resettlement communities, requiring you to walk through a market or night market to enter. Dragging luggage through the noise and darkness at night is extremely difficult. It's advisable to inquire beforehand whether the guesthouse faces the main street or requires navigating alleyways. The night I stayed on a back street of Hongkang Road, I walked to the North Station at 6 AM, bought an egg pancake along the way, and just caught the 6:40 AM bus to Jiaozuo.
IV. Core Transfer Subway Stations | Zijingshan-Renminlu Area: Optimal for Nighttime Arrivals and Transfers in the City Center
If you arrive in Zhengzhou close to midnight, or if you need to switch between Metro Line 1 and Line 2 to get to Zhengzhou East Railway Station or the airport the next day, staying within 2 kilometers of Zijingshan Station is the safest option. I recommend staying on Renmin Road and Shangcheng Road, south of Zijingshan Park. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to the metro station, and there are 24-hour convenience stores and traditional noodle shops nearby, so you can have a hot meal even if you arrive late.
First and last train reference: For trains from Zijingshan Station, take Line 1 or Line 2 towards Zhengzhou East Railway Station and Xinzheng Airport. The first train departs around 6:00 AM, and the last train departs around 11:00 PM. For flights before 7:00 AM, the subway may not be fast enough, but a taxi from here takes about 20 minutes to reach the East Railway Station and about 40 minutes to reach the airport, making it a good option to arrive late, get a good night's sleep, and then head out.
Avoid these pitfalls: Many "hotels" in the old city are located in commercial and residential buildings. The elevators are old, and there's no one at the front desk late at night. Before checking in, check for negative reviews from the past month focusing on keywords like "soundproofing," "hot water," and "elevator." Rooms along Jinshui Road that face bus stops will experience continuous braking noise until 1 AM; be sure to choose rooms with double-glazed windows or those facing away from Jinshui Road. Arriving in Zhengzhou late at night, exit from Exit D of Zijingshan Station, walk a few minutes along Renmin Road, have a bowl of mutton stew noodles before checking in, and you'll finally feel refreshed.
Blogger's Summary and Checklist of Overnight Transit Tips
Having visited these four areas, my core principle is: stay near the high-speed rail station on the south side of the West Square, near the airport on Yingbin Avenue, near the bus station on the back street of Huayuan North Road, and near the subway transfer station on Renmin Road in Zijingshan. My primary requirement for transit accommodations isn't attractive decor, but rather soundproofing, hot water, elevator access, and quick pick-up/drop-off service.
"Practical Tip 1" Zhengzhou East Railway Station and Zhengzhou Railway Station are two different stations. Confirm before buying tickets and booking rooms to avoid going to the wrong one in the middle of the night. "Practical Tip 2" Almost all hotels within 2 kilometers of Xinzheng Airport offer shuttle service, but be sure to call to confirm that it is free, not shared, and the wait time is no more than 10 minutes. "Practical Tip 3" All major chain hotels near transportation hubs vary in age. Before booking, search for keywords such as "soundproofing," "hot water," and "elevator" based on recent reviews. "Practical Tip 4" If you have an early morning flight the next day, don't rely on the first subway train. If your flight is before 7 a.m., book airport transfer directly. "Practical Tip 5" If you arrive after 11 p.m., prioritize areas that are within walking distance. Don't drag your suitcase through urban villages to save a few dozen yuan.
