Four Family-Friendly Accommodation Options in Xiamen: Design-Focused, Lakeside, Old Villa, and Park Surrounding Areas Guide

When traveling to Xiamen with kids, choosing the right area for accommodation is half the battle won. The following four types of areas correspond to boutique guesthouses, lake views, old villas, and areas near amusement parks, respectively, suitable for different family groups.

Design-oriented hotels/boutique guesthouses: Xitouxia, Huandao Road

Xitouxia is a mini fishing village along the Ring Road, popularized by wedding photography. It's just across the street from Zengcuo'an, but with a much lower tourist density. Dozens of designer guesthouses, converted from old fishing village houses or wedding photography studios, are clustered here. Their exteriors are predominantly white, featuring archways and floor-to-ceiling windows, with some offering sea-view balconies or small swimming pools. It's suitable for young parents who enjoy photography and appreciate aesthetically pleasing accommodations, as well as families who see the guesthouses themselves as attractions. For family-friendly facilities, many guesthouses offer family rooms, children's bathrobes, and sand-digging tools; some have children's sandpits or wading pools. When booking, you can request a crib or high chair. Photo spots are concentrated on guesthouse rooftops, pure white archways, the Ring Road boardwalk, and sunrise viewpoints. Note that some sea-view view spots are close to rocks, so be careful with children. Huangcuo Beach or the Calligraphy Square are within walking distance; the sand is soft and fine, and you can even bring a bucket to collect crabs after the tide goes out in the evening.

Lake view/mountain view rooms: Yundang Lake area

Yundang Lake is located in the heart of Xiamen Island, surrounded by established lakeside hotels and serviced apartments. Higher-floor rooms offer panoramic views of Egret Island Park, the lake's central island, and the city skyline. This area is ideal for families seeking a balance between city outings with children and a quiet place to sleep: Egret Island Park features a pigeon plaza, a children's playground, and a musical fountain; the Xiamen Science and Technology Museum and the Municipal Children's Library are also within a short drive. The best photo spots from the lakeside rooms are the Egret Goddess statue at sunrise and the coffee street in the evening, with stunning reflections in the lake. Higher-floor rooms also offer views of the Fox Tail Mountain Meteorological Tower and the Yundang fishing lights. For family convenience, the lakeside trails are flat and suitable for strollers, and there are numerous shops and supermarkets nearby for easy access to supplies. If children are interested in birdwatching, flocks of egrets often grace the lake in winter, offering a natural lesson with a small pair of binoculars.

Old villas/local building renovation: Huaxin Road old villa area

Huaxin Road is one of Xiamen's earliest overseas Chinese villages, where old red-brick villas and bougainvillea-lined alleyways retain a blend of Southeast Asian and Minnan architectural styles. It has been transformed into small boutique hotels and guesthouses, most featuring courtyards, patterned tiles, and wooden staircases, ideal for families wanting their children to experience local architectural culture. While the area itself isn't by the sea, it's adjacent to Zhongshan Park, which includes a children's island and a zoo, all free to enter and perfect for young children to burn off energy. Photo spots include the red walls at the corner of Huaxin Road, the patterned tile floors of the old villas, the ancient banyan trees in the courtyards, and the nearby Xi'an Road flower and bird market. Due to the narrow alleys and low traffic volume, it's a safe area for family walks. Many old villas still retain swings or rocking horses in their courtyards, hidden family-friendly surprises. Be aware of the soundproofing of the old villas and the stairs; confirm the availability of elevators or lower-floor rooms before booking.

Family-friendly resorts/theme parks surrounding: Jimei New Town

Jimei New Town is the area outside Xiamen Island with the highest concentration of family-friendly resources. Centered around Lingling International Circus City, Chengyi Science and Technology Exploration Center, and the Garden Expo Park, it offers a convenient route for families to "watch circuses and visit science museums during the day, and stay near the amusement parks at night." Many hotels and apartments in the area feature family-themed rooms, children's playgrounds, or swimming pools, and some are within walking distance of the circus city. This makes it ideal for families with a full itinerary, especially for children aged 3 to 10. Recommended photo spots include the Xinglin Bay sea bike path and the Moonlight Ring night view; during the day, family bikes can be rented and ridden along the bay. Chengyi Science and Technology Exploration Center features a giant slide and interactive aerospace exhibits, while the Garden Expo Park offers different urban garden exhibition areas, perfect for leisurely strolls with strollers. If it rains, the exploration center's large indoor area is a good alternative. The main circus performance at Lingling Circus City is usually scheduled for the afternoon or evening; staying nearby can help avoid traffic congestion when crossing the island after the show.

Staying here with kids saves you half a day on entrance fees: choose to stay overnight in Jimei New Town, and walk directly into the park the next morning, giving you at least two more hours of playtime than rushing across the bridge from Xiamen Island during the morning rush hour. If you just want to relax at the hotel and take photos, Xitouxia and Yundang Lake are more suitable; if you want your children to experience old Xiamen, Huaxin Road is the only option.
