Taihu Lake Slow Travel Diary | Wuxi 7 Days 6 Nights In-Depth Slow Travel and Family-Friendly Itinerary

This 7-day, 6-night Wuxi itinerary focuses on 2-3 key locations per day, allowing time for the Taihu Lake shoreline, the ancient Grand Canal, and the nearby mountains and forests. This guide assumes accommodation along Metro Lines 1 and 2 or in the Binhu District for convenient bus and walking connections.

Day 1: After arrival, engage in low-intensity warm-up activities along Lihu Lake.

It's not advisable to visit distant attractions on the day of arrival. In the afternoon, visit Lihu Park and walk from the Lihu Light Boardwalk to the southern tip of Bogong Island. The one-way distance is about 1.5 kilometers, and the path is flat, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. In the evening, have dinner at the lakeside commercial street, where there is a wide selection of Wuxi local cuisine and snacks. The entire walk, including rest stops, will take about 2 hours.

Day 2: Yuantouzhu and Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal

It's recommended to enter Yuantouzhu Park before 8:30 AM. First, take the park's electric shuttle bus to the boat dock, then take a ferry to Taihu Fairy Island. The path on the north side of the island is gentle; seniors can walk only the section from the dock to the archway. After returning, walk the section from Yuanzhu Chuntao to Chenglantang, where there is little elevation difference. In the afternoon, return to the hotel to rest. In the evening, go to the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal, slowly walking from the Nanchang Street intersection to Nanxiatang, or take a rowing boat to see the old houses on both banks. These are two major attractions in one day, which can be broken into several sections for rest.

Day 3-Day 4 Choose one of the following routes: Ancient Town and Garden Route or Bamboo Forest and Hot Spring Route.

Starting from the third day, the itinerary is divided into two routes: A (ancient town and garden) and B (bamboo forest and hot spring). You can choose one of the two, both of which are suitable for families and retirees.

Route A, Day 3: Huishan Ancient Town and Jichang Garden

In the morning, walk along the central axis of Huishan Ancient Town, focusing on Huishan Straight Street and the ancestral hall complex. The stone slabs on the ground are generally flat; just avoid the side alleys with multiple steps. After lunch, enter Xihui Park and walk along the main circular path in Jichang Garden, following Bayinjian, Jinhuiyi, and Zhiyujian. The slope is very gentle. After leaving the park, you can visit the Second Spring Under Heaven along the way. It is recommended to arrive in the ancient town before 9 am on weekends.

Day 4 of Route A: Dangkou Ancient Town and Ehu Rose Garden

Dangkou Ancient Town is quite far from the city center. After arriving in the morning, walk along both banks of the Beicang River. The main street is gentle, and the ancient bridge has few steps, making it suitable for wheelchairs to walk along the outer riverside path. In the afternoon, visit Ehu Rose Garden, where the flower field path is mainly paved. Return to the city for rest in the evening.

Route B, Day 3: Yixing Bamboo Forest and Hot Springs

The drive from the city center to Yixing Bamboo Forest takes approximately 1.5 hours. Within the bamboo forest, it's recommended to take the cable car to the highest peak in southern Jiangsu, then descend gently along the wooden boardwalk to avoid continuous ascents. In the afternoon, check into a hot spring resort, limiting each soaking session to under 20 minutes. Stay overnight in Yixing to minimize travel time.

Route B, Day 4: Longbeishan Forest Park and Return Trip

In the morning, we will visit Longbeishan Forest Park. The main loop road is gentle and the trails are wide. You can take a sightseeing bus or just walk the gentle slope from the entrance to Wenfeng Pagoda. After lunch, we will return to Wuxi city. The afternoon will be used as a flexible rest period to recover our energy for the subsequent Lingshan trip.

Day 5: Lingshan Scenic Area and Nianhua Bay Night View

Lingshan Scenic Area requires at least half a day. After entering the park, first watch the Nine Dragons Bathing the Buddha, then enter the Brahma Palace, which is mainly visited from the ground floor. The scenic area is large, so it is recommended to buy a shuttle bus ticket. In the evening, move on to Nianhua Bay. The Zen-themed town's main street and flower-lined walkway are suitable for the elderly and children. After the night lights are on, return along the main road. If you stay overnight in the Mashan area, the return trip will be more relaxed.

Day 6: Wuxi Museum and Liyuan Garden to adjust the pace.

In the morning, visit the Wuxi Museum. The indoor exhibits offer respite from direct sunlight and rain, and the building has ample elevators and rest areas. In the afternoon, visit Liyuan Garden, walk along the Thousand-Step Corridor to view Lihu Lake, and then stroll along the outer edge of the artificial hills. If you have a wheelchair, it's not recommended to enter the interior of the artificial hills. Boating on Lihu Lake is an optional activity. This day involves minimal walking, making it suitable for a restorative day.

Day 7: Closing at Changguangxi Wetland Park

Before returning, we'll visit the southern section of Changguangxi Wetland Park. The boardwalk and greenway have gentle slopes, and the round trip is about 2 kilometers. We recommend leaving your luggage at the hotel, returning to retrieve it after the walk, and then heading to the station or airport. If you're catching an early bus, you can just walk the wetland entrance section.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The Yuantouzhu electric car loop, the wooden boardwalk from Lihu Lake to Bogong Island, the southern section of Changguangxi Wetland Park, the central axis of Huishan Ancient Town, and the Yixing Bamboo Sea cable car round trip are all relatively easy for wheelchairs and strollers to navigate. However, the wooden boardwalks become slippery in rainy weather, so it is recommended to use paved paths such as those at the Wuxi Museum or the Grand Canal Park instead.

Local frequently used apps list

Public transportation payments can be made using "Lingxi" or "Su e Xing"; real-time bus information can be obtained through the "Wuxi Micro Bus" mini-program; scenic spot reservations and entry verification can be completed within "Lingxi"; navigation and taxi booking can be done using Gaode Maps; and weather inquiries can be made using the "Wuxi Weather" mini-program. Some scenic spots require reservations one day in advance.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Wuxi's plum rain season is concentrated in June and July, characterized by high humidity and frequent showers. It's recommended to wear a water-repellent jacket, quick-drying clothing, and non-slip shoes, and carry a folding umbrella. Summer is hot and humid, so prioritize breathable, quick-drying fabrics and pay attention to moisturizing and sun protection. Autumn and winter are relatively dry but noticeably damp and cold; fleece layered under a windproof jacket or down jacket is more practical. Spring, from March to May, has large temperature differences, so layering is the safest approach.
