Set Up Alipay and WeChat Pay Before Visiting China

By XOOTOUR Editorial Team · Updated 15 October 2026

Yes, eligible visitors can link supported international cards for merchant purchases without opening a Chinese bank account. Set up your account before departure, complete the checks requested and keep another way to pay. The same preparation is useful for a Beijing trip.

Quick answer

  • Have your own phone number, passport and bank card ready.
  • Complete setup in the official apps and retain access to bank verification.
  • Check fees on the payment screen and carry a backup.

1. Register and add a card in Alipay

  • Download the official Alipay app, register with your mobile number and choose your preferred language when available.
  • Open the bank-card or Add Card area. Enter the requested card details and complete your issuer's authentication.
  • Follow any identity checks shown. Menu labels and the order of screens can vary by account and app version.

2. Set up WeChat Pay as another option

  • Register or sign in to WeChat using your own number. Open the payment or wallet area; it is often under Me, then Services.
  • Choose the bank-card option and follow the supported international-card and passport prompts. Enter your details accurately.
  • If the wallet is missing or restricted, use official in-app support. Keep your bank's verification number active while travelling.

3. Make a small merchant purchase

  • Once in China, ask whether to scan the merchant's code or show your payment code. Confirm the amount and wait for success.
  • Check the fee and total before approving. App fees, exchange rates and card-issuer charges are separate; offers can change.
  • International-card merchant payments do not automatically enable wallet top-ups, transfers or red packets. For metro travel, activate the appropriate city transport service or buy a ticket.

4. Keep a backup and plan the day

  • Bring your physical card, some renminbi and a charged phone. If a payment fails, read the message and try another accepted method.
  • For verification or declines, contact the payment app or card issuer through official support.
  • With the essentials ready, explore your destination on XOOTOUR and draft a first day with AI Trip Planner.
