Some people say Sinan Road is the "hidden retreat" of Huaihai Road. Tucked behind the bustling streets, it is like a serene lotus standing aloof from the world, quiet and tranquil, narrating the history of old Shanghai and little stories from the long past at a slow pace. Named after the French composer Jules Massenet in the early 20th century, Sinan Road is a well-known French-style avenue, a clean and romantic one-way street lined with towering French plane trees on both sides, connecting Huaihai Road and Xujiahui. The garden villas on both sides of the road feature distinct architectural styles, including British, French and Spanish styles, which reflect its identity before the liberation of Shanghai. It is said that Sinan Road has more than 20 garden villas, gathering almost all the residential architectural styles of old Shanghai, making it a living record of the city's history. Walking along the road, you will feel as if you are taken back to that hectic, messy yet still prosperous era. Today, Sinan Road not only preserves various former residences, but also features Sinan Mansions that have been renovated into a hotel. There are also various characteristic small shops along the street. You can have a cup of coffee in a café, or go to "A-Niang Noodle Shop" to enjoy an authentic bowl of yellow croaker noodles for 20 yuan, then wander around the antique shops, and savor the unique history and romance of Shanghai in the nostalgic atmosphere.
