Experience life like in a water town | A 7-day, 6-night in-depth slow-paced tour of Jiaxing, easily completed by seniors and children.

Splitting Jiaxing into a seven-day trip isn't about filling the itinerary, but about giving time for a morning tea, a stroll along a cobblestone street, and an afternoon Suzhou storytelling performance. The following itinerary assumes arrival in Jiaxing in the afternoon or at noon, with the first two nights spent in Jiaxing city center, and subsequent accommodations can be changed as needed. This is suitable for families with preschool children or elderly people with mobility issues.

Day 1 | Arrival at Nanhu and Yuehe at Dusk

On the first day, avoid long journeys. In the afternoon, head to Huijing Garden in Nanhu Lake and take a boat to the island in the middle of the lake to see the Misty Rain Pavilion. If children or the elderly are not comfortable with boating, you can walk along the Nanhu Lake Greenway, focusing on the section from Huijing Garden to Shaoyuan Garden, which has fewer steps and more shade. In the evening, head to Yuehe Historical District and have dinner along the riverside promenade. After dinner, take a stroll along Zhongji Road; no need to go into any restaurants, just enjoy the reflections of the lanterns. Keep the total walking distance under three kilometers to allow your body time to adjust to the local pace.

Day 2 | Strolling through the Old Town: Inner City, Church and Mei Wan Street

In the morning, we'll visit the Zicheng Ruins Park and the Church of the Holy Mother's Apparition. The two places are about a ten-minute walk apart, with smooth paths and almost no steep slopes. The Zicheng Ruins Park mainly consists of lawns and city wall ruins, suitable for children to run around, while the elderly can rest in the shade. We'll have lunch near Meiwang Street, and in the afternoon, we'll stroll along the riverside promenade. If we get tired, we'll find a waterfront teahouse to rest. We've only planned two or three visits for the day, and won't be heading towards Jiashan or Haining.

Day 3-Day 4 | Choose one of two paths at the fork in the road

These two days you can choose one of two options based on your interests: Option A focuses on ancient towns and hot springs, suitable for families who want to soak in hot springs and take photos; Option B focuses on nature reserves and river tides, suitable for slow travelers who like the outdoors but don't want to hike. If you choose Option A, change your accommodation to Xitang or Jiashan; if you choose Option B, you can stay near Nanbeihu or Haiyan.

Route A: Xitang Ancient Town + Hot Springs

On Day 3, in the morning, travel from the city center to Xitang, visiting only the Misty Rain Corridor, the Songzi Laifeng Bridge, and Xiyuan Garden to avoid traversing all the narrow alleys. In the afternoon, check into a nearby hot spring hotel. Limit the soaking time for the elderly and children to under 40 minutes and ensure they stay hydrated. On Day 4, visit Xitang again in the early morning. Before 7:00 AM, there are fewer tourists, making it suitable for taking photos of empty landscapes. On the return trip, stop by Meihuazhou, visiting only West Street and Shifosi Temple. After lunch, return to Jiaxing city center.

Route B: Nanbeihu + Yanguan Tide Watching

Day 3: Head to Nanbeihu Nature Reserve. First, take the scenic area shuttle bus to Bailuzhou, then slowly hike up Yingke Peak. If elders have limited stamina, they can rest at the lakeside at the foot of the mountain and don't need to climb to the top. Day 4: Decide whether to go to Yanguan to watch the tide based on the tide table. If the tide time is not suitable, go to Qiyuan Garden and the seaside for a leisurely walk instead. The key is to go out before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to avoid sun exposure. Neither route requires continuous hiking for more than an hour, suitable for a slower pace.

Day 5 | Back to the City: Museum and City Moat

Regardless of which route you choose for the first two days, it's recommended to return to Jiaxing city center for Day 5. In the morning, visit the Jiaxing Museum, focusing on the Majiabang Culture Exhibition Hall; the museum is well-air-conditioned and has seating. In the afternoon, take a river cruise from Meiwan Street Wharf or Nanhu Huijingyuan Wharf; the journey takes about 40 minutes each way and is less strenuous than walking. If you still feel tired after dinner, you can walk 500 meters along the lake at Nanhu Tiandi to digest.

Day 6 | Xiangjiadang and Old Buildings Along the Canal

In the morning, we'll visit the Xiangjiadang Lakeside Greenway, walking only the section from Moon Bay Beach to the Visitor Center. The path is flat and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. After lunch nearby, we'll return to the city. In the afternoon, we'll see the exteriors of the Vincent Monastery and the Mu Family Mansion, both located along the canal and within a short walking distance. No activities requiring prolonged standing are scheduled for today, allowing ample time for a nap or free time.

Day 7 | Morning Market Shopping and Return Trip

The last day can be spent at the Yuehe or Nanmentou morning markets to buy some zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), pastries, or local pickles as souvenirs. It's recommended to return to the hotel before 10:00 AM to pack your luggage, check out at noon, and go directly to the station or highway exit to avoid going back and forth between scenic spots and your commute.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

Prioritize walking along the Nanhu Huijingyuan-Shaoyuan section, the Zicheng Ruins Park-Shengmu Xianlingtang section, the Meiwan Street riverside walkway, and the Xiangjiadang Moon Bay section. Within Xitang Ancient Town, only walk the main route of the Misty Rain Corridor. For Nanhu and Beihu, choose the shuttle bus to replace long uphill sections. Keep your total walking distance under 8,000 steps per day, and take a break every 40 minutes.

List of frequently used local apps

Use "Jiaxing Bus" or "Dingda Travel" for buses and public bicycles; use apps like "Tide Table" or local hydrological information to check tides; mainstream ride-hailing platforms can cover the city and major scenic spots; and map apps can be used to search for nearby restrooms and mother-and-baby rooms.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

The rainy season in Jiaxing is concentrated in June and July, so it is recommended to bring a folding umbrella, waterproof shoes, and a light jacket. Hotels may also provide an extra pair of socks. During the dry season in autumn and winter, there are large temperature differences between day and night. From late November to March of the following year, you should bring fleece or a light down jacket. In the afternoon, long sleeves alone are sufficient. In summer, regardless of whether it is sunny or rainy, quick-drying fabrics should be prioritized to avoid cotton clothing being in contact with the skin for extended periods.
