Avoid the pitfalls of nighttime exploration in Jiaxing | My personally tested and compiled route, covering Nanhu Lake lights, Yuehe Night Market, and Pingtan teahouse, after three nights of continuous

After three nights of exploring nighttime routes in Jiaxing, I deleted all the trendy photo spots. The most reliable nighttime experience isn't about eating at Nanhu Tiandi or taking a picture on Yuehe Bridge and heading back to the hotel. A truly authentic Jiaxing nighttime experience involves strolling along the lakeside to admire the lights, then cycling into the old town's night market, and finally hiding in a Pingtan teahouse to wait for the performance to end.

Why I only dared to recommend this night tour route after walking it for three consecutive nights.

On the first night, I followed the map straight to Yuehe, treating Nanhu as just a side trip. However, I got swept along by the crowds at the night market and missed capturing the lake lights I wanted. The second night, I went in the opposite direction, returning to Nanhu from Yuehe, only to discover that the blue sky and the lights on the island in the middle of the lake were most beautiful during the half-hour after the lights came on at Nanhu. Missing this would mean waiting until the next day. On the third night, I finally decided on my itinerary: starting from the east bank of Nanhu in the evening, I would cycle along the city moat greenway to Yuehe, explore the night market, and then visit the Pingtan teahouse.

This route is about seven kilometers long, combining cycling and walking. It doesn't rush through tourist attractions or rely on any "trendy" shops. It's suitable for tourists who dislike daytime crowds and want to see another side of Jiaxing's old town, especially solo female travelers who want a safe nighttime tour and couples who enjoy taking photos.

18:00-19:15 South Lake shore and moat lighting: Don't go into South Lake World yet, go to the east bank to see the "lake lights".

Start at 6:00 PM from the southeast side of the lakeside in Nanhu Huijing Garden, but don't rush into the Nanhu Tiandi commercial area. Walk slowly along the lake towards Wenxing Bridge. Around 6:20 PM, the sky will turn blue, and the lights of the lake island and Haogu Tower will gradually peek through the shadows of the trees. Nanhu Lake is wide, and the lights here aren't massive neon lights, but rather warm yellow and low-density lights, perfect for taking pictures of reflections and silhouettes.

After 7:00 PM, scan a shared bike and ride along the Ring River Greenway towards Yuehe, which takes about 15 minutes. This three-kilometer stretch passes the city wall lights of the Zicheng Ruins and the silhouettes of willow trees along the canal, offering a more authentic "entering old Jiaxing" experience than taking a car. Some sections of the greenway are dimly lit at night, so slow down while cycling, and especially avoid wearing headphones.

If you can't ride a bike, it's about a 35-minute walk, but I recommend cycling because the Yuehe Night Market is just getting busy at this time, and the pace is perfect.

19:15-21:00 Yuehe Night Market Food Street: Browse the main riverside street but don't buy anything; Tanlong and Chaodongdai are where locals truly experience the local cuisine.

The Yuehe Historic District is lively at night, but the stalls on the main riverside street are mostly tourist snacks, only suitable for strolling and looking at the lights. For truly delicious food, you need to turn into Tanlong and Chaodongdai areas, where you can find freshly made large meat dumplings, fermented bean curd meat dumplings, Nanhu water chestnut cake, osmanthus sugar cake, and local-style braised duck neck. For just a few dozen yuan per person, you can have a very satisfying meal, which is much better value than queuing on the main street.

The essence of Jiaxing's late-night snacks isn't barbecue, but the aroma of zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). If you see an auntie wrapping zongzi at the door, you can stop and wait for a pot of freshly steamed ones, but remember that some flavors will be out of stock after 8:30 PM. Small wontons and vermicelli soup are also worth trying; the broth is clear, the wrappers are thin, and it's a local's second meal after dinner.

Leave the main street before 9 PM and walk towards the Little Pig Corridor. There are fewer people there, and the red lanterns of the old houses are reflected in the river. The tranquility you can't capture during the day is only available at this time.

21:00-22:30: Old teahouse or small tavern? Jiaxing's nightlife is found in bars, in Pingtan (a traditional storytelling art form), and in Shaoxing rice wine.

From Yuehe to Luxihui, there are old teahouses, taverns, and Pingtan teahouses to choose from. If you have to choose one of these three, I suggest prioritizing a Pingtan teahouse. Jiaxing itself has a water town and literary atmosphere, and around 9 pm you can still catch local amateur performers playing and singing impromptu. It's not like a performance; it feels more like listening to a piece in your own living room. Don't go expecting a formal performance.

If the Pingtan teahouse is full, you can try the riverside taverns on the north side of Zhongji Road. The yellow wine cocktails, plum wine, and the outdoor seating along the river are all good, with low-volume background music, perfect for chatting. Don't be disappointed if you specifically look for a live music venue; Jiaxing's city nightlife isn't the kind with loud music.

After three nights of observation, the optimal solution I came up with was: at 9 PM, first go to a Pingtan teahouse and sit for 40 minutes; then at 10 PM, move to a riverside tavern, grab a cup of warm Shaoxing wine, and sit under the covered walkway waiting for the breeze. This way, you get both local opera and a gentle night breeze by the water.

22:30-23:30 Late-night snack and return trip along the city moat: Jiaxing is not a ghost town at night.

After 10:30 PM, most shops along Yuehe begin to close, but there are still 24-hour convenience stores along the Huancheng River Greenway, and late-night stalls at Yuexiu Market near Jiaxing College. If you still have an appetite, you can cycle to Yuexiu Market for a bowl of freshly made vermicelli soup or a small portion of shumai. Some sections of this route are quite remote at night, so it's recommended that women cycle in groups.

If you don't want to go too far, you can slowly cycle back along the greenway around the city from Yuehe. The old town is very quiet after 11 PM, and the water is slightly damp, making it a comfortable place to cycle alone while listening to music. Don't linger too long on the riverside section of the greenway.

If you return to the vicinity of Nanhu Tiandi before 11:30 PM, the shopping area will be mostly dark, and the remaining customers will be locals returning home late. At that moment, you'll understand that a night tour of Jiaxing isn't about checking off tourist attractions, but rather a perfect moment to breathe in the city.

Night Shooting: 5 Camera Positions + 4 Safety Tips (Checklist Personally Tested by the Blogger)

Night Shooting Location 1: South side of Wenxing Bridge on the east bank of Nanhu Lake, capture the Haogu Pagoda and the island in the middle of the lake in the same frame, best during the blue hour; Location 2: The corner of the city wall on the Zicheng section of the Huancheng River Greenway, use a medium to long telephoto lens to compress the city wall lights and the canal surface; Location 3: The small dock on the north side of Xiaozhu Corridor under Yuehe River, capture the reflection of red lanterns, if there are many people, wait two minutes to clear the area; Location 4: Stand one step back from the entrance of Yuehe Tanlong, capture the three layers of "old street, crowds, and steam"; Location 5: The top of the arch bridge at the west end of Luxi Hui, after 22:30 you can capture the almost deserted water lane lights.

Safety Tips: 1. Some sections of the greenway for night cycling in Jiaxing are dimly lit. Check the brakes and lights of shared bicycles beforehand, and do not wear headphones while riding. 2. There are no high guardrails along the Yuehe River. Do not back up when taking photos in crowded areas. 3. When cycling to Yuexiu Market late at night, avoid alleys without streetlights. Solo female riders should prioritize riding in groups or using ride-hailing services. 4. Some buses stop running around 10 PM. After 11 PM, it is recommended to cycle or use a ride-hailing service. Do not walk along unlit sections of the canal.

This route is leisurely; just wear soft-soled shoes. Summer and autumn are the best seasons. In spring, watch out for flying insects along the riverbank; in winter, the teahouses are warmer. Before saving this route, remember one principle: first look for the lights, then forage for food, and finally, find refuge in a local's nighttime retreat.
