Hohhot Overnight Map | High-Value Accommodation Areas Within 2km of 4 Transportation Hubs (Avoiding Common Pitfalls)

I stayed in Hohhot for four nights and encountered three major problems: once, I stayed at a cheap place near the north side of Hohhot East Railway Station, only to be terrified by the high-speed train's vibrations starting at 5 AM; another time, I arrived at Baita Airport at night and was offered a "free shuttle" to a farmhouse three kilometers away, which was actually impossible to walk to the terminal. Later, I explored all the accommodation areas within two kilometers of the high-speed rail station, airport, passenger transport center, and major transfer subway stations, only keeping those within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. This guide is divided into four types of transportation hubs, making it suitable for those transferring, taking early morning flights, or arriving in Hohhot at night to directly copy my experience.

High-speed rail station - Hohhot East Station: Stay in the Donghe area of the South Square, avoid staying near the railway tracks on the north side.

Hohhot East Railway Station is the main high-speed rail station. Within a two-kilometer radius, the most convenient area is the hotel area along the South Square towards the East River, at the intersection of Chezhan South Street and the eastern section of Ruyi River. It's about an eight- to twelve-minute walk to the station entrance, or a five-minute taxi ride. There are budget chain hotels and mid-range business hotels to choose from. I stayed in one of the mid-range hotels; the window faced south, and I could barely hear the train tracks.

First and last train reference: The first train on Metro Line 1 from East Station towards the city center is around 6:00 AM, and the last train is around 10:00 PM; for those arriving at night, only taxis or ride-hailing services are available. This area is suitable for people taking the high-speed rail early the next morning, arriving after 10:00 PM, and whose next stop is the airport or the city center for transfers.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: Do not book cheap rooms "north side of East Station" or "north of the railway". Being close to the railway tracks, even the best soundproofing cannot stop the vibrations. If you are bringing your suitcase into the station in the middle of the night, it is recommended to walk through the South Square ground level and not follow the navigation into the North Underpass.

Airport - Baita Airport: If you live near Bayan Station on Metro Line 1, don't believe "free shuttle service".

There aren't many hotels within two kilometers of Baita Airport. The best value-for-money areas are the village of Bayan on the south side of the airport and along the airport road's auxiliary road, about a 15-20 minute walk or a 5-8 minute taxi ride from the terminal. This area has a few budget hotels and guesthouses; the facilities aren't new, but their convenient locations make them suitable for travelers landing in the early morning and taking an early morning flight.

First and last bus reference: The first bus from Bayan (Airport) Station on Metro Line 1 towards the city center departs at approximately 6:10 AM, and the last bus departs at approximately 10:00 PM. Airport shuttle buses operate for longer hours but the frequency is unpredictable. For flights departing before 6:30 AM, you can only rely on your hotel to book a ride or make a reservation in advance. People arriving at the airport after 10:00 PM should try to choose accommodations within walking distance of the village.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: There are many farmhouses with signs that say "Airport Shop" along the airport expressway, but they are actually more than three kilometers away. It can be a pain to drag your luggage in and out of the car in the middle of the night. Before booking, be sure to check the map to make sure that the distance to the terminal is no more than two kilometers in a straight line, and ask whether the pick-up and drop-off is subject to time restrictions and whether you need to wait for others to share the ride.

Passenger Transport Center/Hohhot Long-Distance Bus Station: Stay in the old town area of West Station Street, avoid the back alleys of North Passage Road.

The long-distance bus station is just across the street from Hohhot Railway Station. The most convenient area within a two-kilometer radius is the old city area between Chezhan West Street and Zhongshan West Road. It's a five- to eight-minute walk to the bus station and about ten minutes to the railway station. There are plenty of budget hotels there, costing tens to hundreds of yuan per person, making it suitable for people arriving at the bus station at night and catching an early bus or train the next day.

This area is served by Metro Line 2. The first train departs around 6:00 AM and the last train around 10:00 PM. However, there are many people offering accommodation near the bus station in the early morning, so try to book in advance. After 10:00 PM, the streetlights on the main street of West Station Street are brighter, but the back alleys are much dimmer. Women traveling alone should be careful.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: Older buildings generally have poor sound insulation; you can hear buses starting up and street sweepers in the early morning if you're in a room facing the street. If you have large luggage, try to choose a chain hotel with an elevator; old guesthouses in alleys don't have elevators, and it's very inconvenient to move suitcases in the middle of the night.

Key interchange subway station - Xinhua Square Station: If you live in the Hailiang area of Zhongshan East Road, don't be tempted by cheap prices and choose high-floor, street-facing apartments.

Xinhua Square Station is an interchange station for Metro Lines 1 and 2. Within a 2-kilometer radius, the Zhongshan East Road and Hailiang Plaza area is the top choice for value-for-money. It's a 3-8 minute walk to the metro station, and there are direct metro connections or one-transfer options to the train station, East Station, and airport, making it suitable for people transferring within the city, running errands during the day, and catching trains at night.

There are many hotel options here, ranging from budget to mid-range. Convenience stores and restaurants are downstairs, so you can get hot food even if you arrive late at night. First and last train times: Lines 1 and 2, first train in both directions around 6:00 AM, last train around 10:00 PM. On Fridays and holidays, trains may be delayed, but don't try to arrive after the last train.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: Hailiang Plaza is surrounded by commercial areas. Even late at night, there may still be traffic noise and music coming from high-rise rooms facing the main street. If you are a light sleeper, choose a room on the back street or bring your own earplugs. Xinhua Square Station has many exits. When you exit for the first time, pay attention to the signs and don't take the furthest exit.

Blogger's Summary and Practical Tips

Within two kilometers of the four types of transportation hubs, my ranking is as follows: Xinhua Square and Hailiang area is the most reliable and suitable for most people; Hohhot East Railway Station South Square and Donghe area is the next best, suitable for high-speed rail transfers; Long-distance bus station West Street is suitable for people with low budgets and who are not picky about facilities; Baita Airport area is only suitable for those who are simply catching a flight and whose stay is as short as possible.

Practical Tips: 1. Before booking, measure the walking distance to the terminal or entrance on a map, don't just look at the hotel's stated "straight-line distance"; 2. If arriving at the airport late at night, prioritize chain hotels with elevators and staffed front desks, avoid older residential areas with self-check-in; 3. Hohhot has a large temperature difference between day and night, and it can be very cold dragging luggage in the early morning from October to April of the following year, so make sure the room near the airport has heating; 4. For all "free shuttle" services, ask whether they are limited to certain hours and whether you need to wait for others to share the ride, and it is not recommended to risk waiting for early morning flights.
