A 5-hour overnight hike in Dalian | A route I personally tested from Donggang to Zhongshan Square, compiled after three nights of walking (including flight locations and safety tips).

Before I could properly navigate this night tour route from Donggang to Zhongshan Square in Dalian, I had been tricked by the sea breeze into taking a nearly three-kilometer detour along the same stretch of coastline.

1. 18:00-19:15 Donggang Coastline Lights: First, chase the sunset, then wait for the water city lights to light up.

At 6:00 PM sharp, enter the seaside boardwalk from the east side of the Donggang Musical Fountain Square. This time isn't to wait for the fountain show to start, but to catch the last twenty minutes before the sun sets in the west. Standing on the viewing platform and looking west, the sky over the old town skyline and the harbor will change from gray-blue to light purple. If the tide is out, the near-shore rocks are exposed, allowing you to capture the transitional scene of "lights not yet on, sky still soft."

Walking along the boardwalk towards Oriental Water City for about eight minutes, you'll enter a waterfront area with European-style architecture. Don't rush to take photos at the entrance; walk further in to the small bridge on the seaside. The lights will be fully illuminated around 7 PM. The water city's lighting is more concentrated than the main square, making it suitable for taking silhouette portraits. Walking the entire circle here takes about twenty-five minutes. If you want to wait for the musical fountain show, there are usually two shows in the evenings during summer weekdays. After the show, the crowd on the Donggang platform will increase dramatically. I recommend heading south to exit when the fountain show starts.

II. 19:20-20:15 Donggang to Zhongyuan Snack Street: Shared bikes are smoother than taxis.

After leaving Donggang Water City, ride a shared bicycle southwest along Renmin East Road for about fifteen minutes to reach the area around Tianjin Street and Zhongyuan Snack Street. This section of the road is flat, the non-motorized vehicle lane is wide, and there is not much traffic at night. Avoid the area near the intersection of Luxun Road and Changjiang Road, as there are construction barriers there at night, making it easy to wander into the bus lane. I personally tested it and it's about three kilometers, only five minutes slower than taking a taxi, but it saves the time of waiting for a bus on the roadside after Donggang ends.

Zhongyuan Snack Street is even more appealing to late-night diners than Tianjin Street. At this time, tourists and locals mingle together, and stalls serving grilled squid, braised pork belly, sizzling chicken frames, and steamed sea urchin with egg are quick to prepare. Don't buy from the first stall at the main entrance; walk in two or three stalls and see if the people in line speak with a local accent. You don't need to buy all the snacks at once; two people or one person can order small portions first, and there are also small pubs near Zhongshan Square where you can pair them with your meal.

3. 20:20-22:00 Zhongshan Square Old Building Tavern: Choose the old building, not the street-facing shop.

It's about an eight-minute walk from the food street to Zhongshan Square. The square is surrounded by many old bank buildings, their exteriors illuminated by warm-toned spotlights at night, making it easier to see details than during the day. Instead of choosing the neon-lit bars facing the street, I prefer to turn into a quiet alley behind the square and look for those older buildings with no large signs, just a single illuminated doorway light. These usually offer local craft beer or single malt whisky at mid-range prices, perfect for relaxing and letting the night air cool down after a long walk.

If you have elderly companions or don't drink alcohol, you can replace this hour with listening to storytelling or drum ballad singing at an old teahouse near Friendship Square. However, these evening shows in Dalian are not fixed, so you need to check the schedule in advance. If there is no performance, it is still recommended to take a walk around the old buildings on the west side of Zhongshan Square. After 9 pm, there are fewer tourists, and you can hear the sound of the tram passing by nearby, which is a very "Dalian" urban noise.

IV. 22:10-23:30 Slow cycling back to the seaside along Renmin Road: Sea fog and trams in the same frame at night.

After leaving the pub, walk or cycle along Renmin Road towards Harbor Square. I usually ride a shared bike, which takes about eight minutes to reach Harbor Square, and then slowly cycle towards the Donggang Old Wharf. At this time of day, the streets are quite empty, and the office building lights on both sides of Renmin Road are still on, forming a deep line with the tram tracks on the road. When you get near the old wharf, if the sea fog rises, the lights will become fuzzy, making for even better photos than at dusk.

The final stop is back at the Donggang seaside platform. There's no need to go into the main square; just sit for a while by the north-facing railing. The sea breeze can make it feel quite cool, so even in summer, bring a light jacket. Finish before 11:30 PM; you can easily catch the last subway or night bus. The entire route almost completely avoids the tour groups' routes around Qingniwa Bridge and Xinghai Square.

V. Night Photography: 5 Camera Positions + 4 Safety Tips

Camera Position 1: West side of the Donggang seaside viewing platform, capture the harbor and sunset together; best time is between 6:20 PM and 6:40 PM. Camera Position 2: Near the small bridge by the sea in Oriental Water City, capture the lights and their reflections in the water; it's recommended to use your phone's night mode and lower the exposure. Camera Position 3: Middle section of the non-motorized vehicle lane on Renmin East Road, use a telephoto lens to compress the streetlights and Donggang buildings; suitable for casual snapshots while cycling. Camera Position 4: Under the steps of any old building in Zhongshan Square, use the porch as a foreground to capture the square's night view. Camera Position 5: North side of the old wharf in Harbor Square, wait for the tram to pass by and take a series of shots; the tram lights and the mist create the most narrative effect.

Regarding safety tips: First, it's windy by the sea in Donggang, so don't wear a hood or hold your phone in one hand while cycling to avoid sudden crosswinds; second, the Zhongyuan Snack Street is crowded late at night, so wear your bag in front of you and don't put your phone in a shallow pocket on your coat; third, don't enter buildings without door signs to take photos, especially since many of the old buildings in Zhongshan Square are offices; fourth, if you're cycling alone, try to stay on the main road of Renmin Road after 10 PM and avoid the small streets west of the train station.

The blogger summarizes: This route is suitable for independent travelers who want to quickly grasp Dalian's nightlife in eight hours, as well as those who enjoy urban photography. It avoids spending time queuing at popular viewpoints, instead using walking and shared bikes to connect the coastline, night markets, old buildings, and pubs into a one-way route. Summer and early autumn are the most comfortable, while winter, with its harsh sea breeze, is suitable for shortening the cycling portion. The overall rhythm is: photos at the beginning, food and drinks in the middle, and leisurely strolls at the end, offering a closer look at the local nightlife than simply visiting tourist attractions.
