Yantai Weekend Special Forces | Two Days and One Night Intensive Tour of Zhifu Old Street and Yangma Island, with Money-Saving and Pitfall Avoidance Tips

A two-day, one-night weekend in Yantai perfectly encapsulates the city's unique charm in a high-density itinerary: the first day explores the mountains, streets, towns, sea, and night markets in Zhifu District; the second day heads straight to Yangma Island for a loop, concluding with a stop at Fisherman's Wharf. The itinerary below is designed to arrive at Yantai Station at 9:00 AM on Saturday and depart on Sunday evening, minimizing backtracking and detours.

Day 1: High-density tour of the city center, check-ins without turning back.

After exiting Yantai Station, it's about a 15-minute bike ride or walk to Yantai Mountain. Make Yantai Mountain your first stop in the morning, as the queue for the lighthouse will be shortest then, offering panoramic views of Zhifu Bay and the harbor. The former consulate site, Bing Xin Memorial Hall, and the seaside trail on the mountain can be connected to form a 1.5-hour walking route, eliminating the need for backtracking.

Exiting the main gate of Yantai Mountain, you'll find yourself on Chaoyang Street. The street is much quieter in the morning than in the afternoon, making it ideal for photographing the facades of modern buildings and the old post office. You can quickly browse the creative shops and cafes along the street; don't waste time at popular photo spots. Lunch can be found in the alleyways between Chaoyang Street and Suochengli, with "Penglai Noodles" and "Yantai Stewed Noodles" being top choices. The noodle soup is flavored with seafood, the noodles are thin, and the service is quick. The stewed noodles are best enjoyed freshly pan-fried—slightly crispy on the outside, soft and smooth on the inside—and the garlic sauce is the soul of the dish.

In the afternoon, head to Suochengli (所城里), where the focus is on the layout of a Ming Dynasty garrison, rather than browsing antique shops. You can enter from the north gate, walk quickly along the main street, and then turn into the side alleys to see the gate towers and screen walls of the old courtyards. Allow 40-60 minutes. Afterward, walk to Binhai Square, passing through the old buildings along Hongkou Road, which has a more charming atmosphere than walking along the main road.

Watch the sunset at the seaside square in the evening, and after Yantai Mountain and the surrounding buildings light up, head towards the First Bathing Beach. The sea reflects light better at night than during the day, making for better photos, but wear a light jacket as the sea breeze can make it feel a few degrees colder. For dinner, head to the Nan Hong Street area. Sea cucumber rice, grilled oysters, and mackerel dumplings are popular choices at Jiaodong night markets. Try to arrive before 6 PM to avoid competing with locals for a table.

Day 2: Half-day tour around Yangma Island, Fisherman's Wharf on the way back.

Depart from the city center before 7:30 AM on the second day, take a taxi or early morning bus to Yangma Island Bridge, and then transfer to the island shuttle. Once on the island, the first thing to do is find a bike rental point near Tianma Square. The island loop is about 18 kilometers counterclockwise, and electric bikes are the most energy-efficient, taking about 2.5 hours to complete the main stops.

The island tour focuses on three sections: the Zhangdao boardwalk for viewing the meeting of rocks and sea, the Qinfeng Cliff area for photographing the seaside cliffs, and the Houhai Highway for admiring the bay's curve. Avoid approaching the edges of the rocks when it's windy, as wet shoes become more slippery. For lunch, return to Muping town or the city center; consider seafood noodle soup or fish hot pot, as these are better for your stomach than fried foods.

On the way back in the afternoon, stop by Haichang Fisherman's Wharf. No need to enter the museum; just stroll along the boardwalk leading to the sea. The tour ends around 5 PM, allowing ample time to return to Yantai Station or Yantai South Station. If the sea breeze exceeds level 5 or it rains, transportation and experiences on Yangma Island will be compromised. In this case, you can opt for Golden Beach in the Development Zone, focusing on the back sand plaza and the sunset over the beach for a more relaxed experience.

Transportation Saving Card

For inter-provincial high-speed rail travel, Yantai Station is the preferred choice as it's closer to the core attractions of Zhifu District. Allow an extra 30 minutes for travel from Yantai South Station to the city center. City buses support QR code payment. To get to Yangma Island, take a bus to the "Yangma Island Bridge" stop and then transfer to an island shuttle bus or rent an electric scooter, which is cheaper than taking taxis the entire way. Shared electric scooters are readily available in Zhifu District, but there are no-parking zones around Binhai Square and Chaoyang Street; check the map before parking.

Packing list

For this two-day quick trip, carry only one backpack: ID card, power bank, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, light jacket, umbrella, water bottle, and motion sickness medication. Shoes must be non-slip sneakers or hiking sandals, as the stone paths on Yantai Mountain and the rocky areas of Yangma Island can be slippery when wet. To avoid looking bulky in photos, choose a light-colored short-sleeved shirt with a sun-protective cardigan; a light jacket will help regulate the temperature difference between day and night at the beach.

Avoiding pitfalls while queuing

Avoid the peak tour group hours of 10:00-12:00 when climbing Yantai Mountain Tower; the smoothest route is after the park opens or before 2:00 PM. At Suochengli Night Market, queues are significant after 6:30 PM on weekends; it's recommended to go around 5:30 PM for the first round of meals. Car rental shops on Yangma Island often run out of cars after 10:00 AM; arriving early gives you more options. When ordering seafood at Nanhong Street, confirm the weight and cooking method beforehand; avoid dishes with vague "market prices." Don't eat the cold Yantai-style braised noodles at tourist attractions; go to the local stalls with long queues to avoid disappointment.
