A City steeped in the Chu-Han era: A 7-day, 6-night in-depth travel guide to Xuzhou for families with elderly members and children, offering a relaxed and leisurely experience.

Xuzhou isn't a typical trendy city, but it's perfect for a slower pace. This itinerary is designed for 7 days and 6 nights, with only 2-3 key locations planned each day. It's suitable for families with children taking time off work, as well as retirees. The overall approach is one location in the morning, one in the afternoon, and free time in the evening, avoiding consecutive changes of locations.

Day 1: Arrive in Xuzhou, leisurely drive along the west bank of Yunlong Lake.

The first day will not have a packed itinerary. It is recommended to arrive around noon and check into a hotel near Yunlong Lake. In the afternoon, take a walk along the wooden boardwalk on the west bank of Yunlong Lake, from the concert hall to the island in the middle of the lake; the one-way distance is about 1.5 kilometers and almost without any incline. In the evening, you can take an electric sightseeing bus from the north gate of Yunlong Mountain to the top for lake views. Dinner will consist mainly of home-style dishes such as stewed chicken and flatbread, avoiding spicy foods.

Day 2: Han Culture Scenic Area and Museum, Understanding the Two Han Dynasties in One Day

In the morning, visit the Han Culture Scenic Area, focusing on the Lion Mountain Chu King's Mausoleum Underground Palace and the Han Terracotta Warriors Museum. The underground palace has quite a few steps, so please manage your time carefully. There are benches inside the museum. In the afternoon, move on to the Xuzhou Museum. Advance reservations are recommended. Only visit the two core exhibition halls, "Ancient Peng Through the Ages" and "The Grandeur of the Han Dynasty," and limit your visit to within 1.5 hours. Afterwards, walk to the Huilongwo Historical District and find a teahouse to rest.

Day 3-Day 4 Forks in the road: Ancient Town Route or Hot Spring Nature Route

Choose one of the two options based on your physical strength and interests over the next two days. It is recommended to choose one option for the entire trip rather than alternating between two days to reduce the amount of luggage to carry.

"Route A: Yaowan Ancient Town + Hot Spring Leisure": Day 3: In the morning, head to Yaowan Ancient Town, stroll along the stone-paved streets, and highlight the Wu Family Courtyard and Zhao Xinlong Sauce Shop. In the afternoon, enjoy tea by the ancient canal. Day 4: Return to Jiawang and stay at a hot spring hotel. During the day, you can take an electric cart around Pan'an Lake Wetland Park and soak in the hot springs in the evening.

"Route B: Pan'an Lake Wetland + Lüliang Nature Reserve": Day 3: Spend the whole day at Pan'an Lake Wetland, prioritizing electric boats or electric carts around the lake, avoiding long hiking trails. Day 4: Head to Lüliang Scenic Area, walk a short section along the gentle slope boardwalk of the suspended lake, and stop in Niyuan Village in the afternoon, suitable for parent-child plant identification.

Tips for taking the road: If elderly people traveling with you have knee problems, take Route A first, as the road surface in Yaowan Ancient Town is flat; if children enjoy the outdoors, Route B offers a better natural observation and experience.

Day 5: Guishan Han Tomb + Imperial Edict Museum, a smaller, more leisurely visit.

In the morning, we visited the Guishan Han Tomb. The underground passageway is well-organized and has a gentle slope, making it one of the more accessible Han tombs in Xuzhou. The adjacent Imperial Edict Museum has exhibits with engaging stories, appealing to both the elderly and children. In the afternoon, we returned to the city center and visited the Hubushan Ancient Residence Complex, choosing only the Xima Terrace and Cui Family Courtyard. The stairs are numerous, so proceed with caution.

Day 6: Urban Green Heart and Alternative Rest Days

In the morning, visit Quanshan Forest Park and take the gentle slope from the east gate to the vicinity of Guolao Cave, without climbing to the top; alternatively, go to Yunlong Park, where the lakeside trail is flat. The afternoon is free for leisure activities; you can go to Huilongwo to take more night photos or have dinner in a downtown shopping mall. This day is intentionally left unattended for a more relaxed experience.

Day 7: Breakfast at the morning market, easy return journey

On the last day, you can have breakfast at Jianzi Gu or Fengchu Street, trying spicy soup, pan-fried buns, and shaotang (a type of soup). Note that you can ask for the spicy soup to be made without chili. Afterwards, head to the high-speed rail station or airport according to your return time, allowing about 1 hour for flexibility.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The recommended routes include the wooden boardwalk on the west bank of Yunlong Lake, electric vehicles up Yunlong Mountain, the electric vehicle route around Pan'an Lake, the gentle slope from the east gate of Quanshan Forest Park to Guolaodong, and the main street of Yaowan Ancient Town. Avoid the continuous steps of Hubu Mountain and the steep slope of Xima Terrace as much as possible.

List of frequently used local apps

Use "Gaode Map" or "Baidu Map" for navigation; use "Xuzhou Metro" or "Chelaile" for public transportation; use "Didi Chuxing" or "Gaode Taxi" for taxis; use the official WeChat account or mini-program of "Xuzhou Museum" for museum reservations; use "Meituan" or "Eleme" for food delivery and medicine purchases; use "Caiyun Weather" or the built-in weather app on your phone to check the weather.

Clothing suggestions for rainy/dry season

The rainy season in Xuzhou is concentrated from June to August, characterized by hot and humid weather with frequent showers. It is recommended to bring quick-drying short-sleeved shirts, light-colored clothing, non-slip sandals, and a folding umbrella. The dry season is from November to March of the following year, with large temperature differences between day and night. It is necessary to bring a light down or fleece liner, and children should bring an extra windproof jacket. Spring and autumn are windy, so sun hats and moisturizing products are essential.
