远望1号测量船是由中国自行设计、建造的第一代综合性航天远洋测量船，型深38米，时速高达20节，续航力达到100天。该船于1977年8月下水，1978年交付使用，成为中国航天远洋测控事业的先驱。2008年9月，该船完成“神舟七号”飞船和委内瑞拉通信卫星海上测控任务后，于11月12日安全返回中国，圆满完成“收山”之战。1978年至2010年的32年间，该船先后44次远征大洋，安全航行2600多天、44万海里，圆满完成远程运载火箭、气象卫星、载人飞船等57次重大科研试验任务，享有“海上科学城”的美誉，为国家和民族作出了巨大的贡献，先后荣获集体一等功1次、二等功6次、三等功3次，并荣获“中国载人航天工程突出贡献集体”称号。在圆满完成32年的海上科研任务后，该船正式退役。2011年11月26日15时许，该船成功驶入上海江南造船厂原址2号船坞。2010年10月22日，该船被中国卫星海上测控部赠予江南造船（集团）公司。为了让后人铭记历史，进一步弘扬中国的军工文化、国防文化和海洋文化，中船集团公司、江南造船（集团）公司将进一步借鉴成功参加2010上海世博会的经验，将中国船舶馆、江南机器制造总局翻译馆和江南原址2号坞及远望1号测量船打造成三位一体的展示平台，使江南原址成为集当代造船与军工、船舶与海洋乃至航天与航海等为一体的文化艺术博览圣地。
