7-Day Slow Travel in Qingdao: A Practical 7-Day, 6-Night Itinerary Combining the Old Town, Seaside, and Suburbs

Qingdao isn't a destination for rushing from one tourist attraction to another. A seven-day, six-night itinerary is perfect for exploring the old town, the seaside, and nearby natural or hot spring towns. The following itinerary only includes two to three key locations each day, making it suitable for families with elderly members and children, as well as those who want a real rest after taking time off work. It's recommended to stay in the old town or along Metro Line 3 for the first two nights, and adjust the accommodation for the following nights depending on your itinerary.

Day 1: First glimpse of the old town, Zhanqiao Pier and Signal Hill

Start in the morning from the Zhanqiao Pier on Qingdao Bay, strolling along the coast to Huilan Pavilion to watch the seagulls and the distant Xiaoqingdao Island. Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and take your time taking photos. Have lunch near Zhongshan Road Old Street. In the afternoon, head to Signal Hill Park, walking up Longshan Road's gentle slope to the revolving observation deck for panoramic views of red-tiled roofs, green trees, and the coastline. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll along Zhongshan Road Old Street, without any shopping planned, just admiring the old buildings. The old town has many slopes, so wearing non-slip shoes is recommended.

Day 2: Stroll along Badaguan and Taipingjiao Coast

The essence of Badaguan lies in walking; you don't need to explore every route, just choose the area around Juyongguan Road and Shanhaiguan Road. The Second Bathing Beach has soft, fine sand, perfect for children to play in; the beach has changing and foot-washing facilities. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll along the seaside boardwalk in Taipingjiao Park. The sea breeze is gentle, the path is flat, and you can sit and rest whenever you get tired. If the weather is clear, Taipingjiao is a great spot to watch the sunset.

Day 3-Day 4: Choose one of two branching paths in the suburbs

For these two days, it's recommended to choose only one branch and avoid trying to do too many. Branch A "Hot Spring Ancient Town Route": Day 3: In the morning, visit Jimo Ancient City. The streets and alleys within the city are flat, with archways, the county government office, and the Confucian temple, making it easy for the elderly and children to walk around. In the afternoon, check into a hot spring town for a relaxing soak. Day 4: In the morning, visit either Xiongyasuo Ancient City or Jinkou Ancient Town to see Ming Dynasty coastal defense relics and old villages in Jiaodong. Return to the city in the afternoon. There are few restaurants in the Xiongyasuo area, so it's advisable to bring your own drinking water and light meals.

Branch B "Nature Reserve Route": Day 3: Enter Beijiushui in Laoshan, walking along the gentle slope from Neisanshui to Chaoyin Waterfall. This section has few steps and plenty of shade, making it suitable for families. Stay overnight near Beijiushui for easy access to the next morning's activities. Day 4: In the morning, visit Liuqinghe Beach or Shazikou Fishing Port to see the mountains and sea meet. Fishing boats often return to Shazikou in the afternoon, and children will enjoy watching the sorting of their catch. Return home after noon.

Both branches avoid strenuous hiking, focusing on a slow pace. To get to Jimo, you can take the subway or intercity bus; to get to Beijiushui, you need to transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus at the visitor center.

Day 5: Underwater World and Xiaoyushan

Qingdao Underwater World is located next to the First Bathing Beach. The layout inside is gentle and suitable for all ages. It's best to book your visit in the morning in advance via the official WeChat mini-program to avoid peak group visit times. At noon, relax on the beach at the First Bathing Beach. Pay attention to the beach flag for the day; it's not advisable to just play in the sand on the shore before going into the sea. In the afternoon, head to Xiaoyushan Park. The gentle slope to the "Lanchao Pavilion" takes only about ten minutes, offering panoramic views of the old city.

Day 6: Naval Museum, Luxun Park, and Xiaoqingdao Island

The Naval Museum requires advance reservations with real names and is closed on Mondays, so please avoid visiting on Mondays. The outdoor exhibition area features decommissioned warships, which may interest children, but the decks are quite hard, so non-slip shoes are recommended. The coastal rocky path in Luxun Park is gentle, allowing you to slowly walk to Xiaoqingdao Island and see Qinyu Road and the lighthouse along the way. The entrance to Xiaoqingdao Island has limited opening hours, so please check before entering in the evening. These three locations are adjacent to each other, making the total walking distance manageable throughout the day.

Day 7: Finishing at the Stone Man and Sculpture Garden

The last day is dedicated to Shilaoren Beach and Qingdao Sculpture Park. The beach here is wide and gently sloping, perfect for children to have one last swim. The sculpture park features gentle green spaces and a pleasant seaside promenade, ideal for seniors to stroll. It's recommended to finish the trip before noon to allow ample time for getting to the airport or train station. If your return trip is in the afternoon, consider having lunch along Haier Road or Hong Kong East Road for convenient transportation.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The entrance to Signal Hill Park from Longshan Road to the viewing platform is a gentle slope; the Juyongguan Road in Badaguan Scenic Area has almost no slope; the Taipingjiao Coastal Boardwalk is flat throughout; the main road of Xiaoyushan Park has a gentle slope; the section from the inner three streams of Beijiushui to Chaoyin Waterfall is the most suitable route for the elderly in the scenic area; the Tangdaowan Coastal Trail and the Stone Elder Sculpture Park Trail also have almost no steps. These seven routes are the priority when bringing a wheelchair or stroller.

Local frequently used apps list

Use "Qingdao Metro" and "Chelaile" to check bus and subway information; use "Didi Chuxing" to hail a taxi; refer to "Dianping" or "Meituan" for restaurant reviews; use the official mini-programs of each scenic spot to buy tickets; and use "Caiyun Weather" for more accurate rainfall predictions up to two hours in advance. It is recommended to download these apps in advance to avoid having to register on-site.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Qingdao's rainy season is concentrated from June to August, with humid air and strong winds at the seaside. During this season, bring a lightweight raincoat or folding umbrella, and choose non-slip sandals or quick-drying shoes; canvas shoes are not recommended. Autumn, winter, and early spring are relatively dry seasons, but the sea breeze is cold, so prepare a windproof jacket, a light down jacket, and a scarf. Elderly people and children can bring an extra fleece. Regardless of the season, the temperature difference between day and night at the seaside is more significant than inland; layering clothes in an "onion-like" fashion is the safest approach.
