Should you visit Jiaxing during peak season or off-season? Let me explain the differences one by one.

Many readers don't ask "What's there to see in Jiaxing?" before their trip, but rather "When should I go, how should I get there, and who should I go with?" Without addressing these three questions, even a long list of attractions is useless. This article doesn't list attractions, but instead uses six comparisons to lay out the practical differences between peak and off-peak seasons, weekends and weekdays, and group tours and independent travel in Jiaxing, helping you make decisions based on your time, budget, and travel companions.

Go during peak season vs. go during off-season

Most travel guides will tell you that peak season is bustling with activity and all shops are open, while off-season is quiet, with some shops closed and discounts available. In reality, Jiaxing's peak season is mainly driven by holidays and student winter and summer vacations, with a surge in visitors to Nanhu, Yuehe, and Xitang. The time cost of queuing and crowding often far outweighs the added atmosphere of the "bustling" season. On weekdays during the off-season, shops along Yuehe Street are still 70-80% open, and you don't have to wait for a table or squeeze through the crowds.

If you're looking for photos, a quiet walk, and a good local meal, the off-season is far better than the peak season. If you're traveling with children, want to experience festivals, and don't mind queuing, the peak season is acceptable, but be prepared for crowds.

Going on weekends vs. going on weekdays

Most travel guides will tell you that the area is more lively on weekends, and too quiet on weekdays. In reality, Jiaxing's local life doesn't rely on tourists. On weekday lunchtimes, the shumai shops and noodle restaurants are still packed with locals. On weekends, Yuehe River and Nanhu Lake will see a significant increase in drivers from surrounding cities. Parking difficulties, long queues for food, and people taking photos and leaving are all common occurrences.

If you can only go on weekends, it's recommended to visit the main attractions before 9 am or after 5 pm, and spend the rest of the time visiting museums, libraries, or parks on the outskirts of the city. Going on weekdays means you won't have to worry about time, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Group tour for one day vs. two days of independent travel

Most travel guides will tell you that joining a tour group is hassle-free and allows you to see the main attractions in one day. In reality, Jiaxing city is not large, public transportation and taxis are not difficult to find, and independent travel has a high margin for error. Tour groups often compress Nanhu Lake, Yuehe River, and Xitang into one day, with very short stays at each point, and the lunch places may not be the restaurants frequented by locals.

For those traveling with elderly people or children, or who prefer to avoid the hassle of transportation, a half-day or full-day tour is acceptable. For young people, photography enthusiasts, and those who enjoy planning their own pace, independent travel is highly recommended. A two-day, one-night itinerary is the most comfortable: one day in the city, and one day in Xitang or the surrounding area.

Staying in the scenic area vs. staying in the city

Most travel guides will tell you that staying inside the scenic area offers a charming ambiance and beautiful views right outside your door. However, accommodation prices within scenic areas are generally high, and the soundproofing and facilities may not match the price. Furthermore, there are fewer amenities nearby after the tourists have left. Jiaxing city center is not far from the main attractions. Staying in a mid-range hotel in the city offers more dining options, and it's convenient to get to the scenic areas by taxi or public transport.

If you want to photograph the deserted Moon River or Xitang in the early morning, staying overnight within the scenic area is worthwhile. Otherwise, staying in the city center is more cost-effective, especially when traveling with elderly people, as dining and medical care are more convenient in the city.

Driving vs Public Transportation

Most travel guides will tell you that driving is flexible and convenient for bringing luggage. However, in reality, roads within Jiaxing's old city are quite narrow, and parking spaces around scenic spots are extremely scarce during peak season and weekends; finding a parking spot can take longer than taking the bus. Jiaxing's trams and buses cover the main attractions, and taxi fares are also relatively low.

If you're only exploring the city center, driving isn't recommended. If you plan to visit nearby ancient towns like Xitang and Wuzhen, driving or taking a taxi will offer more flexibility. Driving is generally fine on weekdays, but on weekends and holidays, try to park your car at your hotel and rely on public transportation within the city.

One-day round trip vs. two days and one night

Most travel guides will tell you that you can see all of Jiaxing in one day. In reality, a day trip only covers the surface of Nanhu Lake and Yuehe River; there's simply no time to visit Xitang or Wuzhen, and meals are often rushed. The charm of Jiaxing lies in its slow pace—sitting in a teahouse, turning into a deserted alley in the old streets—all of these require time.

If you're just stopping by for a quick visit, one day is fine. But if you want to truly experience the "water town feel," you should stay at least one night. A two-day, one-night trip would be possible: Day 1 in the city, Day 2 in Xitang, then return to the city or head home in the evening.

Spring and Autumn vs. Summer and Winter

Most travel guides will tell you that spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, while summer and winter are not recommended. In reality, spring and autumn in Jiaxing do have pleasant temperatures, but they are also peak tourist seasons. Summers are hot and humid, but the Moon River and South Lake are very pleasant at night, perfect for evening strolls. Winters are damp and cold, with fewer tourists and cheaper accommodations, suitable for those who prefer peace and quiet.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit with elderly people and children. For young people who don't mind the heat, summer nights can be quite charming. If you're visiting Jiaxing in winter, focus on food and indoor dining options; don't expect to spend much time outdoors.

Traveling with elderly people and children vs. traveling alone or as a couple

Most travel guides will tell you that Jiaxing is suitable for everyone. In reality, the pace of life is completely different for different groups of people. If you are traveling with elderly people or children, you should have a relaxed itinerary, reduce walking distance, and prioritize taxis and accommodations within the scenic area. If you are traveling alone or as a couple, you can stroll through the old streets, ride shared bicycles, and sit by the river for an afternoon without having to rush.

For families with elderly members and children, a two-day, one-night trip is recommended, staying in the city center and choosing two key attractions. Solo travelers or couples can make a day trip or stay overnight, spending time walking and enjoying local food and drinks.
