Where to stay in Jiaxing without making a mistake | Breaking down four distinctive accommodation areas according to your budget

Setting a budget first, then choosing areas based on your itinerary, is the safest way to find accommodation in Jiaxing. Jiaxing city isn't large, but each area has a distinct character: some excel in transportation, some in night views, and some are perfect for a quiet getaway. Below, we break down suitable areas into four budget tiers.

Budget-friendly route: Jiaxing Station—People's Park—Jianguo Road area

Suitable for: Backpackers and students with limited budgets and tight schedules, as well as overnight travelers who need to catch a train or long-distance bus early the next morning. It is also suitable for transit passengers who need to frequently change trains in the city. This area has outstanding transportation advantages, being close to Jiaxing Station with a dense network of bus lines. The T1 tram line connects Nanhu, Zicheng, and Yuehe, and old town attractions such as Pingshan and Zicheng are within walking distance, saving a lot of commuting time within the city.

The surrounding area is characterized by its old-town atmosphere. The Qinjiang Road and Jianguo Road areas are densely populated with time-honored breakfast and snack shops, offering everything from fresh meat shumai to zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). Even arriving in the early morning, it's not difficult to find hot food and convenience stores. Tips to avoid: Some hotels in the area are hidden in old alleyways, with rooms often having poor soundproofing and lighting. Multiple hotels may share the same entrance in the same building, so be sure to view the room before checking in, confirm the window's orientation, and avoid rooms located next to bus stops or garbage collection points. Many older buildings lack elevators, so if you have large luggage, you need to communicate with the floor manager in advance. Basic room types are in high demand on weekends and short holidays, so it's recommended to book early and avoid trying your luck at a last-minute hotel.

Comfortable budget: Outer edge of Yuehe Historic District—around Zhongji Road or Meiwan Street

Suitable for: Young tourists and families who want to stay close to the water town but don't want to pay a premium for old houses. The outer edge of Yuehe River and the Zhongji Road area are within walking distance of the main street of Yuehe River, making it easier to experience the night market, teahouses and bars, but quieter than the first row of houses along the river; Meiwan Street is a more low-key alternative, less crowded and quiet, with concentrated restaurants, suitable for guests who don't like the noise of the night market.

In terms of transportation, most attractions in the old town are within walking distance of Yuehe, and a taxi ride to Nanhu is about the starting distance. Meiwang Street offers convenient bus connections, but it's a bit far from the train station. The surrounding area has mature amenities; Yuehe has a night market and snack stalls, while Meiwang Street has many local restaurants and cafes. Most restaurants are open until around 9 PM, so the nightlife is relatively subdued. Tips to avoid: Older buildings in Yuehe generally have poor sound insulation; newly renovated design-style accommodations on the outer edges are relatively safer. Prices increase significantly during holidays and peak seasons like Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival; try to avoid the first row of rooms on the main riverside street and choose a slightly more inward location. Parking is scarce on both sides of Zhongji Road on weekends; those driving should choose accommodations with parking spaces, otherwise they will need to park in an outer parking lot and walk.

Quality-oriented budget: Nanhu Tiandi - along the east side of Nanhu Scenic Area

Suitable for: Families, couples, or business travelers who value views, hygiene, and consistent service. The core advantages of this area are the night view of Nanhu Lake and the lakeside promenade. You can take a walk along the lake in the early morning or evening. The Nanhu Tiandi commercial complex offers a wide variety of dining options, cafes, and family-friendly dining choices, so you don't have to make a special trip to the old town for food.

In terms of transportation, trams and buses are available, but taxis or cars are recommended for those with large luggage or traveling with elderly people or children. Traffic congestion is common around Nanhu during holidays, so allow extra time for travel to Yuehe and Zicheng. Tips to avoid: The experience of lake-view rooms differs significantly from non-lake-view rooms in the same area; confirm the room's direct lake view and whether the floor will be obstructed by tree canopies when booking. Families with children should note that some hotels are more business-oriented, with limited children's amenities and play facilities. Prices increase significantly during peak season; consider booking a package including breakfast for consecutive stays to avoid the high cost of adding breakfast on the side. Parking at Nanhu Tiandi is plentiful but often full on weekend afternoons; those driving should avoid peak hours or inquire about hotel parking policies in advance.

High-end experience-oriented budget: Xiangjiadang Tourist Resort or waterfront residences along the Yuehe River

Suitable for: Self-driving tourists, vacationers who want to escape the crowds, and families with children for an in-depth tour. Xiangjiadang is located northeast of Jiaxing city. The lake area is open and the greenway is complete, which is suitable for slowing down. Families can fly kites or camp on the lawn. If you want to stay in the old city, the few waterfront courtyard homestays in Yuehe can also be included in this category. You can experience the atmosphere of living by the water in Jiangnan. It is suitable for taking pictures.

Transportation to Xiangjiadang relies heavily on driving or ride-hailing services. It's about a half-hour drive from the old town, and public transportation is limited. The surrounding area is mainly comprised of lakeside greenways and hotels/restaurants, with few external businesses and limited takeout options, making it more suitable to have meals at the hotel. Tips to avoid: Driving is not recommended as ride-hailing services are slow at night, so advance booking is best. Resort-style accommodations are in high demand on weekends and during the summer; it's advisable to book high-end rooms several weeks in advance. Yuehe Nei Courtyards, however, should be approached with consideration for sound insulation and dampness issues in older buildings. Wooden stairs and low thresholds may not be ideal for the elderly or children, and those with sleep sensitivities should choose carefully.

Plan your itinerary first, then choose your accommodation: If you only have one night to catch a train, choose the old train station; if you want to visit Yuehe River and Nanhu Lake, prioritize Nanhu Tiandi or the outer edge of Yuehe River; if your main purpose is a vacation, stay directly in Xiangjiadang. Choosing the right area is the key to truly experiencing the slow pace of life in Jiaxing.
