Don't go outdoors in Ningbo on rainy days | Local testimonial: This indoor cultural route is the safest bet during bad weather

Having lived in Ningbo for seven years, what I find most annoying isn't typhoon days, but rather people still following travel guides to Dongqian Lake to photograph the "Mirror of the Sky" during typhoons. Last month, I witnessed a family of three having their umbrella broken by the wind at the lakeside, and I couldn't bear it any longer, so I took them to the Ningbo Museum.

Many travel guides declare "Ningbo is not suitable for tourism" when it rains, but locals actually think that bad weather is the best time to visit Ningbo's cultural and art venues. Fewer people, quieter, no queues, and you can stay dry all day without getting sunburned or wet. The following all-indoor route is my personal favorite, which I've taken friends on more than ten times.

Ningbo Museum: The interior view of the building is more worthwhile on rainy days than on sunny days.

Designed by Wang Shu, this museum features exterior walls made of old bricks and tiles. On sunny days, visitors take photos outside, neglecting the interior exhibition layout. On rainy days, when the light dims, the contrast between the water feature in the courtyard and the exhibition halls creates stunning visuals, and the interior circulation remains completely unaffected by the weather.

I recommend allowing two to two and a half hours. It's free, but you must make a reservation in advance through official channels. It's closed on Mondays. The cafe and light meal options inside the museum are limited, so I suggest going to the Donggudao Underground Street for lunch instead, and you can also walk the next section of the street there.

Donggu Road Underground Block: A Local's "Air Raid Shelter Canteen" and Underground Art Corridor

From Gulou Station to Dongmenkou Station, this underground shopping street is unknown to many tourists, but locals consider it a lifesaver on rainy days. No need for umbrellas or crossing the street, snacks, fast food, milk tea, and creative shops line the street, with occasional small art murals and pop-up exhibitions.

Lunch is the perfect time to visit, and you can spend an hour to an hour and a half exploring and eating. No reservations are needed, and it's open every day. There are many affordable options, ranging from ten to several tens of yuan per person, which is much more reassuring than getting ripped off at tourist attractions.

Ningbo Art Museum: Indoor River Views and Exhibition Halls Converted from Wharfs on the Old Bund

The Ningbo Art Museum was converted from the old Bund ferry terminal, and Wang Shu preserved the original waiting hall's framework. Many people just take a picture of the building from the outside and leave, but there are often good exhibitions inside, and you can see the Yong River from the windows. On rainy days, the river surface is gray-blue, which is even more charming than on sunny days.

One and a half to two hours is enough to visit. It's free and requires reservations, but closed on Mondays. There are many dining options near the Bund, mostly mid-range. If you want to save money, you can go underground back to the Dongmenkou area to eat.

Ningbo City Exhibition Hall: An Indoor Panoramic View of Ningbo Often Overlooked in Travel Guides

This museum is located in the eastern new town and rarely sees tourists; even many locals have never been inside. It features a huge city model, interactive screens, and planning displays, making it a great place to escape the torrential rain or 40-degree Celsius heat and explore at your leisure.

Schedule an hour to one and a half hours; reservations are free. Closed on Mondays. The cultural plaza and Hankyu Hotel are right next door, offering convenient dining options from light meals to full-course meals, all within a few minutes' walk.

The new Ningbo Library: A "cultural living room" where you can sit for an afternoon without spending a penny.

The new library is not far from the city exhibition hall. The building itself is very open, with tiered reading areas and plenty of seating. Sitting here on a rainy day, flipping through a book or viewing an exhibition, is much better than scrolling through your phone in a hotel room.

A visit of one and a half to two hours is quite comfortable. No reservation is needed, but note that it's closed Monday mornings and only opens in the afternoon. There are cafes and light meals at the nearby cultural square, with reasonable prices.

Ningbo Cultural Plaza Grand Theatre: Keeping bad weather out with a theatrical performance or concert.

If you don't want to go home in the evening, you can go to the Grand Theater in Cultural Square to see a Ningbo opera, Yue opera, or a concert. Ningbo's local operas are very charming, and many young people's opinions change after just one listen. Tickets need to be purchased in advance, and prices are mid-range.

The cultural square itself also has an indoor commercial area and art installations, which you can browse before and after performances. There are many restaurants nearby, making it convenient to have dinner. So, even though you're indoors almost all day, your shoes are still dry.

In conclusion

① Don't ask locals "Where to take photos on a rainy day". Locals will only push you to museums, art galleries and libraries - these places are great for taking photos and you won't get wet in the rain, while they are crowded on sunny days.

② Monday is the worst day to avoid: Ningbo Museum, Ningbo Art Museum, and Ningbo City Exhibition Hall are all closed on Mondays, and the library is closed on Monday mornings. Please avoid these places when planning your trip.

③ Please make an appointment at least one day in advance. During peak season, appointments are usually fully booked on the same day. Do not scan the code at the door, as you may make a wasted trip.

④ The Donggu Road Underground Street is a good place to have lunch, but some snack shops will close after 5 or 6 pm, so don't stay too late.

⑤ In the summer heat, remember to bring a light jacket when visiting cultural venues, as the air conditioning is very strong. In winter, however, there's no need to worry, as the indoor temperature is much more comfortable than the outdoor temperature.
