The Bund earns its reputation, but it does not need to occupy every Shanghai hour. If you want a less checklist-like day, follow the city’s waterways into art spaces, old buildings and a second river view.
At a glance
- Start with one Suzhou Creek section, not its entire length.
- Visit M50 for studios and galleries.
- Leave the North Bund or a bridge view for later light.
1. Walk the creek
- Choose a short stretch of Suzhou Creek near your starting point. Shanghai’s official city routes describe historic buildings and bridge views around Waitanyuan.
- Pause where the Huangpu and Suzhou Creek meet instead of racing from photo spot to photo spot.
- Check the pedestrian route on a map; waterfront works and entrances can change.
2. Give M50 time
- M50 at 50 Moganshan Road occupies a former textile-factory area and now contains studios, galleries and creative spaces.
- Go for the mix of architecture and exhibitions. Individual galleries may set their own hours or admission rules.
- Buy a drink or browse a small shop only if it interests you; the point is to notice the site, not to collect storefronts.

3. End with another angle
- The North Bund and nearby riverbank offer a different view of Shanghai’s skyline after dark.
- Check the return metro or ride route before the evening rush.
- Use XOOTOUR to draft the day’s stops and then verify the walking links and venue details.
