You can book a China Railway ticket with a valid foreign passport. The part that trips people up is usually not the train: it is the exact station, the passenger name or the document carried on travel day.
At a glance
- Use the official 12306 English website or app, or a railway ticket counter.
- Match the passenger name and passport number exactly.
- Carry the same passport to the station and allow time for security.
1. Choose the correct station
- Search the city pair before paying. Large cities can have several stations, and a ticket for one is not a ticket for another.
- Check the station’s Chinese name against your hotel address and transfer plan. A cheaper departure is not a bargain if reaching it is difficult.
- On XOOTOUR, sketch the sightseeing part of the day first so the train departure fits the route rather than splitting it.
2. Enter your passport details
- Create or sign in to a 12306 account, add the passenger using the valid foreign-passport option and follow any identity-verification prompts.
- Copy the name and document number from the passport. If verification stalls, use official support or a station counter instead of repeatedly making new accounts.
- Read the train number, date, station pair and seat class on the final order screen before paying.

3. Board without a last-minute scramble
- Save the booking details offline and bring the passport used to purchase the ticket. The itinerary sheet is not a substitute for the travel document.
- Arrive early enough for security and gate-finding. If the automated reader does not accept your passport, ask station staff for the manual channel.
- Check the current change and refund conditions in 12306 before assuming that a missed train can be fixed without cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a photo of my passport?
Carry the original valid travel document used for the booking; do not rely on a phone photo at the gate.
Is the English website enough?
It supports foreign-passport ticketing, but station notices and staff instructions still govern on the day.
