Premiered in 2005, the show tells the legendary life of French King Louis XIV, from his ascension to the throne at a young age, through his turbulent romantic experiences, to his military victories and glorious reign. The musical was staged 380 times in France, Belgium and Switzerland, drawing a total audience of over 1.6 million. With its unforgettable melodies, spectacular choreography and sumptuous court costumes, it conquered France and became a legendary French cultural phenomenon in the 2000s. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, *Le Roi Soleil* made a strong comeback in a brand-new version at the Dôme de Paris in December 2025, and restarted its French tour. More than 350,000 tickets were sold before the premiere, and the show has been a smash hit ever since, making it the most sought-after French musical production at present. While remaining faithful to the original version, the revived *Le Roi Soleil* integrates contemporary elements to endow the show with new vitality. In October 2026, *Le Roi Soleil* will be specially invited to make its debut in China amid its intensive French tour, taking the stage at Shanghai Culture Square to bring local audiences on this unforgettable glamorous journey to the Palace of Versailles. Synopsis The musical *Le Roi Soleil* opens with the Fronde Rebellion. Young Louis XIV had been crowned, but the real power was controlled by his mother and Cardinal Mazarin. He fell in love with Marie Mancini of humble birth. To prove himself, Louis XIV went to the battlefield in person. When he fell ill and fell into a coma, only Marie stayed loyally by his side. However, their love was opposed, and Louis was forced to marry the Spanish princess. After Mazarin's death, Louis XIV took full power and became the "Sun King", indulging in sensual pleasures, keeping his mistress Madame de Montespan, and expending people's resources to build the Palace of Versailles. After many twists and turns, he finally broke through secular conventions, married Madame de Maintenon, the governess of his illegitimate children, and lived a life beyond his identity as a monarch. Starting with the Fronde rebellion, the young crowned Louis XIV had his power controlled by his mother and Cardinal Mazarin. He fell in love with Marie Mancini of humble birth.
