Slow Travel in Urumqi | A Comprehensive 7-Day, 6-Night Itinerary That Can Be Completed Even with Elderly and Children

Urumqi is about two hours ahead of the rest of China, allowing for a slower pace of travel compared to coastal cities. It's ideal for a more relaxed trip, especially when traveling with elderly people or children, as you don't need to cram the entire Tianshan Mountains into your itinerary. The following seven-day, six-night itinerary centers on the city center, with only two to three key destinations planned each day, allowing for lunch breaks and flexible time.

Day 1: First Experience at Hongshan Park and Erdaoqiao

On the first day, there's no rush for long-distance travel. In the afternoon, head to Hongshan Park. From the south gate, a gentle slope leads to Hongshan Pagoda in about twenty minutes. The path is shaded by trees and offers panoramic views of the city and Bogda Peak. Hongshan Park is free to enter; those with average stamina don't need to climb the pagoda, as the view from the platform is sufficient. In the evening, visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, focusing only on the exterior of the buildings and the handicrafts section. Avoid large meals in the main square to allow your digestive system time to adjust.

Day 2 Museum and Consulate Lane, Shuimogou Park

In the morning, make a reservation in advance at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, focusing on the "Xinjiang Historical Relics Exhibition" and the "Ancient Mummies Display." The museum's layout is gentle and suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. The museum is closed on Mondays and reservations must be made through official channels with your real name. Lunch will be at the Consulate Alley, where you'll choose simple options like noodles, pilaf, and yogurt. In the afternoon, visit Shuimogou Park and take a leisurely walk along the Shuimo River path. The path is shaded and offers the most effortless waterfront experience in the city.

Day 3-Day 4 Fork in the Road A: Dabancheng Ancient Town and Salt Lake Wetland (Two Days)

If your travel companions are less physically fit and prefer to explore cultural sites and wilderness, we recommend Route A. On Day 3, depart from the city center in the morning, driving approximately one and a half hours to reach Baishuijian Ancient Town in Bancheng. The focus will be on the ancient city wall ruins, wetland boardwalk, and the Wang Luobin Music Museum; the entire route is mostly flat. In the afternoon, arrive at Bancheng Salt Lake and stroll along the hard-lined lakeshore. Avoid participating in any floating activities to prevent skin irritation from the salt. Overnight in Dabancheng or return to the city center.

On Day 4, we visited Chaiwopu Lake Wetland for birdwatching in the morning. The wooden boardwalk has a very gentle slope, and migratory birds can be seen in spring and autumn. In the afternoon, we returned to the city and visited the Xinjiang Ancient Ecological Park to see Akhal-Teke horses, poplar trees, and petrified wood. The park combines indoor and outdoor activities, and strollers are allowed throughout. The two-day itinerary is relatively spread out, suitable for a leisurely pace.

Day 3-Day 4: Fork in the Road B: Nanshan Ranch and Hot Springs (Two Days)

If your travel companions enjoy mountain grasslands and can tolerate short stretches of winding mountain roads, you can choose Route B. On the morning of Day 3, head to Xibaiyanggou in Nanshan Ranch. Take a shuttle bus to the waterfall stop, and after getting off, walk only about one kilometer along a gentle wooden boardwalk; do not attempt to climb to the source of the waterfall. In the afternoon, take a walk around Banfanggou Town. Overnight in the Nanshan area, noting that the altitude is approximately 1,800 meters; bring extra layers for the night.

On Day 4, we visited the Silk Road Mountain Hot Springs in the morning, choosing the outdoor low-temperature pools. The elderly and children were limited to half an hour each. In the afternoon, we returned to the city, stopping at the Tianshan Grand Canyon entrance viewing platform along the way. We only viewed the open valley, without venturing deeper into the hike. After about forty minutes, we continued our return journey.

Day 5: A leisurely day trip to Tianchi Lake in Tianshan.

Tianchi is about an hour and a half drive from the city center, so it's recommended to depart before 9:00 AM. Upon arrival, take a shuttle bus to the lakeside. Only the eastern half of the lakeside boardwalk is walked; the slope is gentle, and you can turn back at any time. Have lunch near the visitor center. In the afternoon, you can choose to take the Mayashan cable car for sightseeing, but those with a fear of heights or mobility issues can stay and rest by the lake. Tickets and shuttle bus passes must be used on the same day; do not plan to use them on separate days.

Day 6 Naan Culture Industrial Park and Hongguang Mountain Supplement

In the morning, visit the Naan Culture Industrial Park to observe the production process and purchase portable naan as souvenirs. The park mainly consists of indoor exhibition areas with a simple layout. In the afternoon, visit Hongguangshan Ecological Park and stroll along the outer ring road of Dafosi Temple. The road is wide and flat, suitable for strollers. In the evening, you can return to Erdaoqiao or Lingguan Lane to purchase dried fruit. No nighttime entertainment is planned.

Day 7: City Park Closing and Return Trip

Depending on your return flight or train schedule, take a walk in People's Park or Nanhu Civic Square in the morning, focusing on flat ground, for a short rest. Head to the airport or train station two hours in advance to conclude your trip.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The loop from the south gate of Hongshan Park to Hongshan Pagoda is about two kilometers long, with gentle slopes throughout; the waterfront walkway in Shuimogou Park is about three kilometers long, with no steps; the wooden boardwalk around Tianchi Lake on the east side is about 1.5 kilometers long and wheelchair accessible; from the Xibaiyanggou parking lot in Nanshan Ranch to the waterfall stop, it is recommended to take only the shuttle bus, as the slope of the boardwalk after getting off the bus is no more than ten degrees. Avoid choosing the unpaved trails of Yaomoshan and the Bogda hiking route.

Local frequently used apps list

Use Gaode or Baidu Maps for navigation, Didi or Gaode for taxis, Meituan or Dianping for restaurants, 12306 for railway tickets, and the "Visit Xinjiang" mini-program or the official WeChat accounts of various scenic spots for reservations. Use MoWeather or Caiyun Weather for the weather. Most attractions in the city support QR code ticket purchase; it is recommended to make reservations for museums one day in advance.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Urumqi has a dry climate, but the perceived temperature varies greatly depending on the season. The rainy season is concentrated from June to August, with frequent afternoon showers in the mountainous areas. A lightweight windproof jacket or folding umbrella is necessary, and shoes with non-slip soles are recommended. During the day, short sleeves and a sun-protective shirt are sufficient. The dry season is from April to May and September to October, with diurnal temperature variations often exceeding 15 degrees Celsius. A light down jacket or fleece is needed in the mornings and evenings, while a long-sleeved shirt is sufficient at midday. Winter, from November to March of the following year, brings snow and slippery roads. Non-slip shoes are essential for walking in the city, and hats, scarves, and gloves are indispensable. Temperatures at Tianchi and Nanshan are 5 to 8 degrees Celsius lower than in the city.
