Getting Around China with Payments Apps and Transport

By XOOTOUR Editorial Team · Updated 15 October 2026

A smooth day starts with the right address and a route you understand. Follow these four steps to get from your hotel to the places you want to visit, pay along the way and find your way back.

Quick answer

  • Save Chinese place names and the exact station or entrance.
  • Use the right code for the task: shopping and metro entry differ.
  • Keep a return route and a backup payment method.

2. Take the metro or book a ride

  • For the metro, check your city, line, direction and exit. A shop payment code is different from an activated transport code.
  • If the transport code will not activate, ask station staff about a single-journey ticket or another supported method.
  • For a booked car, check the pickup instructions, vehicle and plate. Airport pickup zones may be away from the terminal entrance.

3. Pay and check the result

  • A merchant may ask you to scan its code or show your payment code. Use the app the merchant accepts.
  • Check the merchant, amount and selected card before confirming. Wait for a clear payment result.
  • If a payment is unclear, check transaction history with the cashier before trying again. Use cash or another accepted method if needed.

4. Plan the next leg and the way home

  • For intercity trains, use the exact station on your ticket. China Railway accepts valid foreign passports for real-name tickets.
  • Carry the document used for booking and allow time for security and finding the gate. Ask staff if an automatic reader fails.
  • Before your last stop, check the return route, final metro service, phone battery and hotel address.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my shop payment code at metro gates?

Use the city transport code or ticket accepted by that operator. Ordinary payment codes are not interchangeable with transport codes.

What if I cannot find my driver?

Check the pickup zone and meeting instructions in the booking. Use the in-app contact option if necessary.
