Spot Introduction

Zhang Yuan is located at the southern end of Taixing Road, south of West Nanjing Road and west of Shimen No.1 Road. The site was originally farmland, which was built into a garden by British merchant Geelong in 1878. On August 16, 1882, Chinese merchant Zhang Shuhe purchased this garden from the Heji Foreign Firm, with a total area of 21 mu, and named it "Zhang Shi Weichun Garden", also known as Zhang Family Garden. Later, Zhang Shuhe carried out repeated expansions and renovations to the garden. By 1894, the total area of the whole garden reached 61.52 mu, extending from today's West Nanjing Road (Taixing Road intersection) in the north to today's Weihai Road in the south, and from today's Shimen No.1 Road in the east to today's North Maoming Road in the west.
