Spot Introduction

Xujiahui St. Ignatius Cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai adjoins bustling Xujiahui Commercial District. Its red brick walls and two towering bell towers make this centuries-old medieval Gothic building stand out. The simple exterior and ornate interior carry strong religious vibes, where you can enjoy rare urban tranquility. Its granite-edged window frames and eaves, graphite tile roof with sacred stone carvings look solemn. The cathedral is charming at night with external lighting. Supported by 64 columns, it has a grand altar shipped from Paris in 1919, holding nearly 3000 people for Mass. Colorful stained glass on pointed arched windows casts beautiful light spots when sun shines through. Built by French Jesuits, it is also called St. Ignatius Church, one of the largest Catholic churches in Shanghai. Many believers come for Mass and prayer daily, and the green space in front is a popular wedding photo spot for newlyweds.
