Spot Introduction

Wukang Road is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai. It was originally named Ferguson Road, after American missionary John Ferguson. Running north-south to connect the bustling Middle Huaihai Road and the quiet Huashan Road, Wukang Road is a "Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Street" with 37 historical buildings, 14 of which are well-preserved, making it a veritable "Celebrity Road". Strolling along this century-old historic lane, you will see lush ancient trees on both sides, with scattered European-style buildings popping up along the roadside. Wukang Building, the landmark of Wukang Road, was designed by the renowned Hungarian architect László Hudec. Its red brick exterior walls, overhanging corner balconies, and triangular classical pediment window lintels are full of the charm of the French Renaissance period. The building is shaped like a giant ship waiting to set sail, which explains its former name "Normandie Apartments". Film artists including Wu Yin, Zheng Junli and Zhao Dan once lived here, and the second daughter of Kong Xiangxi, Ms. Kong Lingwei, is currently the largest property owner here. Rows of former residences of celebrities are a major highlight of Wukang Road. No. 113 is the former residence of the literary giant Ba Jin, a quiet and cozy old house that was Ba Jin's last and longest-residing home in Shanghai. No. 393, a British countryside-style garden villa, is the former residence of Huang Xing. No. 1, Lane 40, is the former residence of Tang Shaoyi, a standalone Spanish-style garden villa with a retro and grand vibe... Apart from former celebrity residences, there are other characteristic old villas here. The SAIC office building at No. 390 is a small Mediterranean-style house with a red roof and white walls, which has a distinct style different from other old villas. No. 99 is the former Aquarius House, a standalone villa with a towering spire, looking precious and mysterious against the white high walls and green branches, where the movie *Lust, Caution* was shot. It may take a whole day to fully savor the past and present of Wukang Road, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants for you to take a break. The outer area of Wukang Court at No. 376 consists of three old villas, where the popular restaurant Coffee Tree is nestled among blooming flowers. Order a vegetable Panini paired with a cup of rich aromatic coffee, and you will get great satisfaction. The Farine Café at No. 378 is filled with a simple French countryside vibe, and its croissants are hailed as "the best croissants in Shanghai".
