The pinnacle of global guitar duos — the Assad Brothers, two performers with two guitars, are acclaimed to have "set a new benchmark for guitar duos". On November 4, after 60 years of performing together, the Assad Brothers will stage their Shanghai premiere, which is also the farewell tour of their artistic career. This single concert unfolds the map of South American music. The repertoire features distinct South American characteristics, ranging from *Alma Brasileira* by Piazzolla and Villa-Lobos, to the suite *One Week in Rio* by Gnattali and Assad, as well as works by Gismonti, where you can also appreciate the original creative charm of Sergio Assad. Raised in a family deeply connected to Brazilian musical traditions and trained under guitarist and lutenist Monina Távora, a disciple of Andrés Segovia, the Assads developed an ensemble style of remarkable unity and flexibility. Their artistry has inspired a wide range of composers to write works for them, including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger, and Francisco Mignone. Sérgio Assad has further expanded the Duo’s repertoire through his own compositions, written both for the Assads and for collaborations with other musicians, suitable for recital settings and symphony orchestra concerto performances. The Duo Assad’s repertoire moves fluidly between classical music and traditional musical languages, with programs that include transcriptions of Baroque keyboard works by Bach, Rameau, and Scarlatti, as well as adaptations of works by Gershwin, Ginastera, and Debussy. While occasional elements of improvisation appear in their performances, these serve as expressive devices rather than a deliberate pursuit of jazz stylistic features. Cross-cultural dialogue is the core feature of the Assad Brothers' artistic path, including a series of works created by Sérgio Assad based on Chinese mythology and imagery, such as *Sun Wukong Toccata* and the suite *Chinese Zodiac* specially created for 12 Chinese female guitarists. This exploration of cultural exchange also extends to broader cooperation fields: their collaborative work *The Walls* with Yo-Yo Ma draws symbolic inspiration from the Great Wall of China, reflecting on the connection and estrangement between different cultures. These creations are regarded as contemporary compositional and artistic dialogues, rather than presentations of folk styles. The Assad Brothers have collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, Dawn Upshaw, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and performed on the same stage with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Their albums released on Nonesuch and GHA record labels have won Latin Grammy Awards. In 2026, Sérgio and Odair Assad will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their duo, and launch their farewell tour across North America and selected international venues.
