A leisurely 7-day, 6-night itinerary for families and retirees, exploring the Yellow River through the city at a relaxed pace.

Lanzhou is perfect for a slow-paced trip. The core principle of a 7-day, 6-night itinerary is to plan only 2-3 locations per day, leaving time for the Yellow River Trail, a bowl of noodles, and rest stops. The following itinerary uses the banks of the Yellow River in the city as its axis, interspersed with optional stops in the suburbs. Days 3 and 4 can be switched depending on physical condition and weather.

Day 1: Arrive in Lanzhou, first get used to the rhythm of life along the Yellow River.

No long-distance activities are scheduled after landing. In the afternoon, visit Zhongshan Bridge, a century-old iron bridge and a landmark of Lanzhou, perfect for a leisurely stroll and taking photos. The entrance to Baitashan Park on the north side of the bridge has a gentle slope, and along the path, you can overlook the Yellow River and Zhongshan Bridge together. If the elderly or children are not physically fit, they can simply walk to the "White Pagoda" platform and do not need to climb to the top. In the evening, take a walk along the Yellow River Scenic Belt, watching the sheepskin rafts and the lights on the opposite bank. Have dinner near Zhangye Road Pedestrian Street in the evening.

Day 2 Gansu Provincial Museum + Waterwheel Expo Park

In the morning, focus on the Gansu Provincial Museum, with the "Flying Horse of Gansu" bronze horse and the Silk Road exhibition hall being the core area. It's recommended to make reservations in advance through official channels and avoid weekend mornings. The museum's layout is gentle and suitable for the elderly and children. In the afternoon, visit the Waterwheel Expo Park to watch traditional waterwheels operate along the Yellow River. The park's walkways are gentle. If time permits, you can also visit the Yellow River Mother Sculpture before returning to your accommodation to rest.

Day 3-Day 4: Choose one of two branches near the suburbs

These two days offer two branches with similar rhythms but different scenery types. Choose one; it's not recommended to rush between them.

Branch A: Hekou Ancient Town + Hot Spring Rest. Day 3: Travel to Hekou Ancient Town, mainly to see the ancient town layout at the confluence of the Yellow River and the Huangshui River, and the riverside slow streets. The town is mostly flat, suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. In the afternoon, you can head towards Lanzhou New Area and check into a hot spring hotel. Day 4: Enjoy a hot spring bath in the morning, and return to the city for a nap in the afternoon. Suitable for families who want to relax midway through the trip.

Branch B: Xinglong Mountain Nature Reserve + Mountain Trail. Day 3: Visit Xinglong Mountain and choose a gentle slope trail on either the east or west side, adhering to the principle of "viewing the forest without climbing to the summit." Overnight at the foot of the mountain or in Yuzhong County. Day 4: In the morning, take a walk on the mountain trail or along the valley. Return to Lanzhou in the afternoon. This route is suitable for those who enjoy natural air and can tolerate a slightly gentle slope.

Day 5: Wuquanshan Park + Lanshan Santaige Pavilion

The entrance to Wuquanshan Park is gentle, and the ancient buildings and springs are scattered throughout the park. Follow the signs to the left-hand path. Hiking the entire way to the Santai Pavilion on Lanshan Mountain is not recommended; take the cable car or a shuttle bus up the mountain. The summit platform offers panoramic views of Lanzhou's main urban area and the bend of the Yellow River. If the weather is clear, the light is better for photography after 4 PM. Note that the temperature at the summit is a few degrees lower than in the city, so bring a light jacket.

Day 6: Shichuan Ancient Pear Garden or a leisurely stroll through the city's cultural landscape.

If you choose the hot spring route for Days 3 and 4, you can visit the Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard on Day 6 and stroll along the pear tree trails. Springtime is the best time to see the blossoms, and autumn is ideal for picking the pears. If you choose the Xinglong Mountain route, it's more relaxing to stay in the city on Day 6: in the morning, visit the Lanzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Hall or the exterior of the Readers' Building, and in the afternoon, explore Lanzhou Old Street, which is mostly flat and avoids continuous uphill climbs.

Day 7: Morning market wraps up, leaving room for flexibility.

No sightseeing is planned for the last day. In the morning, you can visit the morning market or a traditional beef noodle shop near your accommodation for a bowl of "first-cook" noodles, and then buy souvenirs such as lilies and bitter roses. Allow at least 2.5 hours for travel time between Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport and the city center, and confirm your flight or train schedule before your return trip.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

The first recommended route is the section from Zhongshan Bridge to the Waterwheel Expo Park along the Yellow River Scenic Route, as the entire path is gentle and has benches for rest. At Baitashan Park, only walk to the halfway platform to avoid continuous steps. For Wuquanshan, choose the gentler path on the left. For Lanshan Santaige, prioritize taking the cable car or shuttle bus. If you are traveling with elderly people, it is recommended to only walk from the foot of the mountain to the halfway pavilion at Xinglongshan, without climbing to the summit.

List of frequently used local apps

For buses and subways, you can use the "ride code" or local transportation card mini-program; for intercity and long-distance bus routes, you can check "Gansu Passenger Transport" or the official transportation platform; for reservations at the Gansu Provincial Museum, use its official mini-program; for weather, use "Lanzhou Weather" or mainstream weather apps; for ride-hailing and food delivery, mainstream travel and food delivery platforms offer faster response times in the city. It is recommended to save your accommodation address in your navigation app in advance for easier communication with the driver.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Lanzhou is generally dry, with the rainy season concentrated in July and August, mostly consisting of short-lived showers. There is a significant temperature difference between day and night. During the rainy season, it is recommended to bring a packable, water-repellent jacket and shoes with non-slip soles. During the dry season (April-June and September-October), a single-layer long-sleeved shirt is sufficient during the day, with a light fleece or windbreaker added in the mornings and evenings. UV radiation is strong year-round, so hats, sunglasses, and moisturizing products are more commonly used than rain gear.
