Sleeping near Hangzhou's transportation hubs | A list of 4 overnight accommodation areas within 2 kilometers, perfect for early morning flights/overnight arrivals/transfers.

After being ripped off by an apartment hotel's "300-meter straight-line distance" claim at the West Square of Hangzhou East Railway Station, I revisited all the accommodation areas within two kilometers of Hangzhou's four major transportation hubs. This time, instead of listing hotels, I'll focus on four categories: high-speed rail stations, airports, passenger transport centers, and major transfer subway stations, to show you truly walkable or short-distance taxi options for transit accommodations.

We have personally tested the following four areas under two extreme scenarios: arriving at the store late at night and rushing to catch a train in the early morning. The first and last train times are based on the regular operating hours of Hangzhou Metro, and the specific times are subject to the announcement on the day.

Hangzhou East Railway Station | If you live on the western section of Tiancheng Road, don't be fooled by the "straight-line distance".

Exiting the West Square of the East Railway Station, walk for about eight to twelve minutes across Tiancheng Road to reach an area with a relatively high concentration of chain hotels. Unlike the Pengbu area near the East Square, this area has commercial buildings and residential communities as buffer zones, and is not directly adjacent to the railway line. This is a more reliable place for people arriving in Hangzhou at night or transferring to high-speed trains to Qiandao Lake or Huangshan the next morning. It takes about five minutes by taxi to the station entrance, but the drop-off platform is often congested during the morning rush hour, so walking is recommended if you're catching a train.

Reference for first and last train times: Hangzhou East Railway Station is served by Metro Lines 1, 4, 6, and 19. The last trains to the city center and airport are mostly after 11 PM, with Line 19 towards the airport around 11:10 PM. The first trains depart around 6 AM. This means that most high-speed trains connect to the metro upon arrival; those arriving in the early morning will have to take a taxi or wait for a night bus.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: Don't book "apartment rooms" facing Pengbu from the East Square. Many are hidden in residential buildings, and you can clearly hear your neighbors dragging their suitcases to catch trains in the middle of the night. On the Tiancheng Road side, try to choose a high floor room that faces away from the railway. If the receptionist says "facing the inner courtyard," it's more likely to be a good choice. Before you depart, be sure to ask which entrance is closest to you. Hangzhou East Station is huge, and avoiding unnecessary walking is a big plus.

Xiaoshan Airport | Yongsheng Road Metro Station/Airport New World Area, early morning flights are the most reliable.

Many people mistakenly believe that the only option around the airport is to stay inside the terminal building. In fact, the "Airport New World" complex is right outside Yongsheng Road Station on Metro Line 7. Within walking distance, there are a number of budget chain and mid-range hotels. It's about two kilometers from the airport, a ten-minute taxi ride or one metro stop directly to the terminal. For red-eye flights or early morning departures, staying here is much more convenient than taking a taxi from the city center in the early morning.

First and last train reference: For Line 7, the first train from Yongsheng Road towards Wushan Square is around 6:00 AM, and the last train is around 10:30 PM; the first train towards the airport is around 6:10 AM, and the last train is around 10:50 PM. Flights before 7:00 AM will likely miss the subway; you'll need to take a taxi or book a hotel that includes airport transfer. Most chain hotels in this area have 24-hour front desks, unlike guesthouses where they might have unsolicited calls for airport pickup in the middle of the night.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: There are many guesthouses around the airport advertising "free pick-up and drop-off," and the prices seem cheap, but they are usually right next to village roads or overpasses, with virtually no soundproofing. Drivers picking you up in the early morning can be heard clearly making phone calls downstairs. It's recommended to choose a chain hotel near Airport New World and confirm with the hotel in advance whether there are extra charges for pick-up and drop-off and what type of vehicle is available to avoid having to search for someone in the parking lot in the middle of the night.

Passenger Transport Center | South side of Jiubao Passenger Transport Center Station: Convenient long-distance bus transfers

Jiubao Passenger Transport Center is a hub for buses traveling from Hangzhou to destinations such as Wuzhen, Xitang, and Zhoushan. Metro Lines 1 and 9 connect here. Within a two-kilometer radius, the most convenient area is the cluster of hotels south of the passenger transport center and south of Jiusha Avenue, a five- to eight-minute walk from the station. This is ideal for those taking overnight buses to Hangzhou or catching early morning buses to nearby ancient towns.

First and last bus reference: For Metro Line 1, the last bus from Jiubao to the city center is around 11 PM, and some buses heading towards Linping and Xiasha depart even later; for Line 9, the last bus heading towards Guanyintang and Long'an is around 11 PM, and the first bus departs around 6:10 AM. If the night bus arrives at 2 AM, there is generally no metro service, so you will have to take a taxi or contact your hotel in advance for pick-up. Fortunately, there are plenty of taxis available at the passenger transport center station in the early morning, so waiting isn't too difficult.

Tips to avoid common pitfalls: Jiubao area has many commercial and residential buildings, and the population is relatively diverse. Try to choose hotels with independent access control and 24-hour front desk. Avoid guesthouses hidden in apartment buildings that require a temporary password to unlock. Also, avoid rooms located right next to the elevated highway ramp of the passenger transport center. The noise from buses coming and going and their horns in the early morning can be very disruptive. It's essential to specify "do not face the elevated highway" when booking.

Core transfer station | The old alley west of Fengqi Road Station, a hidden overnight spot for transfers in the city center

If I need to take the early subway to Hangzhou East Railway Station or the airport the next day and don't want to stay in a remote area, I would choose the area around Jietansi Lane and Shihuqiao Road, west of Fengqi Road Station. It's about a six- to nine-minute walk to Fengqi Road Station, where you can transfer to Line 1 and Line 2. It takes about twenty minutes to get to Hangzhou East Railway Station and about an hour to get to the airport. The surrounding area is full of old Hangzhou local life, with breakfast shops and convenience stores downstairs, making it much more comfortable than staying in a purely transportation-oriented area.

First and last train reference: The first train on Line 1 towards Xiaoshan Airport from Fengqi Road Station is around 6:00 AM; the first train on Line 2 towards Liangzhu and Chaoyang is around 6:10 PM. The last trains towards the city center and East Railway Station in the evening are generally after 11:00 PM. If you have an early morning flight, taking the first subway to the airport will give you enough time. However, if your flight is before 7:00 AM, it is recommended to stay near the airport the night before.

Avoid these pitfalls: Many guesthouses in old alleyways, converted from old houses, don't have elevators, making it very tiring to drag large suitcases. Before booking, always ask "which floor?" and "is there an elevator?" Also, choose rooms on higher floors near Qingchun Road or Zhongshan Middle Road, as the noise from electric bikes and buses braking is quite noticeable during rush hour. The value here lies in the location and the lively atmosphere; don't expect the soundproofing standards of a star-rated hotel.

Blogger's Summary + Practical Tips

Of the four areas, if you're catching a high-speed train, stay on Tiancheng Road (west of the East Railway Station); if you're taking an early morning flight, stay at Airport New World on Yongsheng Road; if you're taking a long-distance bus, stay south of Jiubao Passenger Transport Center; and if you're transferring in the city, stay in the old alley west of Fengqi Road. There's no absolutely best option, only the one that best suits your arrival time on the day you arrive and your departure time the next day.

Practical Tips: 1. Regardless of which transportation hub you're staying in, prioritize chain hotels with 24-hour front desks. Don't be tempted by cheap apartments that require a temporary password to open the door. 2. When booking, ask "Which way does the room face? How far is it from the railway or elevated road?" This is more helpful than reading dozens of reviews. 3. If you land in the early morning, try not to book hotels that require a shuttle bus to get to, as the experience of waiting for the bus in the middle of the night is extremely unpleasant. 4. The last Hangzhou Metro train usually runs around 11 PM, and the first train runs around 6 AM. Check the timetable for the day before catching an early flight or night bus.
