A Slow and Relaxing Journey Through Fuzhou, the Ancient Capital of Fujian: A 7-Day, 6-Night In-Depth Slow Travel Guide for Families and Seniors

A 7-day, 6-night trip to Fuzhou doesn't need to be packed with tourist attractions. It's recommended to limit the pace to two key attractions each day, with a one-hour rest at the hotel at midday to avoid continuous uphill climbs. The following breakdown is based on "one attraction per half-day". Days 3 and 4 offer two options: an ancient town and hot spring route or a nature reserve route, which can be switched depending on the season and physical condition.

Day 1: Upon arrival, only visit the main street of Nanhou Street.

It is recommended to choose an afternoon flight or high-speed train and stay in the Dongjiekou area of Gulou District or the Chating area of Taijiang District. In the evening, head to Sanfang Qixiang (Three Lanes and Seven Alleys), focusing only on the central axis of Nanhou Street. Avoid visiting all the restaurants included in the combined ticket to prevent fatigue the next day. Highlight the gate towers of the lanes on both sides of Nanhou Street, the outer perimeter of the waterside stage, and Guanglufang Park. Dinner can be found in the nearby food area. Elderly people and children should avoid trying too much fried taro; start with small samples.

Day 2: Strolling around Gushan Mountain and visiting the night streets of Shangxiahang.

In the morning, head to Gushan Mountain. Prioritize taking the shuttle bus to the entrance of the Eighteen Scenic Spots, then walk along the Meili Snow Mountain loop or to the outer platform of Yongquan Temple. The hike is strenuous enough even without climbing to the summit. After lunch, return to the city for a rest. After 4 PM, visit the Shangxiahang Historical and Cultural District, walking along the Sanjie River past Santong Bridge and Xing'an Bridge to view the facades of the guild hall buildings. Leave before dark to avoid the slippery stone paths along the river.

Day 3-Day 4 Branch A: Songkou Ancient Town + Gui'an Hot Spring

Day 3: Charter a car or take a bus towards Yongtai to Songkou Ancient Town (approximately 1.5 hours). Upon arrival in the morning, visit Hexing Road, the ancient ferry crossing, and the Folk Museum. Lunch will include local delicacies such as egg swallow's nest and nine-layer rice cake. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely walk along the Dazhang River. Return before 4 PM or check directly into the Gui'an Hot Spring Resort. Day 4: In the morning, soak in the hot springs and do stretching exercises. In the afternoon, stroll through Gui'an Flower Sea Park or the Gui'an Mountain Trail. Return to the city before dark.

Day 3-Day 4 Branch B: Minjiang Estuary Wetland + Changle Beach

Day 3: Visit the Minjiang Estuary Wetland Nature Reserve. First, go to the Wetland Museum to learn about migratory bird routes, then walk along the boardwalk for bird watching, avoiding the edge of the mudflats. In the afternoon, visit the outskirts of Meihua Ancient City in Changle to see the coastal windmills and beaches; do not stay for long if the wind is strong. Day 4: In the morning, visit the Changle Binhai New City Digital Town or the Commercial Press Fuzhou Branch. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll along East Lake, and return to the city in the evening.

Recommended route: From autumn/winter to early spring, prioritize Route A for its comfortable hot springs; during the spring migratory bird season or if you're bringing birdwatching binoculars, choose Route B. Both routes involve long journeys, so hiring a car is more suitable for the elderly and children than public transportation.

Day 5: Yantai Mountain and Old Western-style Houses in Cangshan

In the morning, start from Cangshan Cinema and walk along Lequn Road and Aiguo Road, focusing on Lequn Building and the exterior of Shicuo Church, without entering any closed courtyards. The path has a slight incline but is short, taking about two hours with stops along the way. In the afternoon, visit the exterior of Fanchuanpu Church or Yantaishan Park to avoid the afternoon sun. Wheelchairs are allowed throughout the route, but some steps on Lequn Road require detours.

Day 6: Forest Park and North Shore of West Lake

In the morning, visit Fuzhou National Forest Park. Enter from the South Gate and go directly to the ancient banyan tree. Afterward, follow the gentle slope path to Peach Blossom Pool or Fish Viewing Pond. No hiking is planned. In the afternoon, visit West Lake Park and Zuohai Park. Only walk along the boardwalks. Children can watch the boats, and the elderly can rest on the benches. If the Fujian Provincial Museum is open, you can make a reservation in advance as an alternative if it rains.

Day 7: Before returning home, visit either Xichan Temple or Hualin Temple.

It's not recommended to plan long trips on the last day. In the morning, visit Xichan Temple to see the Bao'en Pagoda and ancient lychee trees, or visit Hualin Temple to see the wooden structure of the main hall; choose one of the three. Return to the hotel before 10:30 AM to check out and head to Fuzhou Railway Station or Changle Airport. If your flight is late, you can take a walk in the hot spring park without your luggage.

Recommended gentle slope routes suitable for the elderly and children

Gushan: Take the shuttle bus to the Eighteen Scenic Spots and then walk the Meili Loop, do not walk the ancient mountain trail; Forest Park: The section from the South Gate to the Ancient Banyan Tree and Peach Blossom Pool has almost no slope; West Lake and Zuohai Boardwalk: The whole route is flat and suitable for wheelchairs; Yantaishan Lequn Road: The slope is short but there are steps, you can detour via Maiyuan Road; Minjiang Estuary Wetland Boardwalk: The slope is flat but it is windy, so you need to hold your child's hand.

List of frequently used local apps

For travel, use Gaode Maps or Baidu Maps, the official railway ticket booking platform, or Didi Chuxing; for city subways, you can activate the Fuzhou Metro QR code in advance; for local public services, use eFuzhou or Minzheng Tong; to find restaurants and scenic spots, use Meituan or Dianping; for museum reservations, use the Fujian Provincial Museum or the corresponding venue's official platform.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons

Fuzhou's rainy season is concentrated from March to June, with the plum rains being particularly pronounced from May to June, and typhoons possible from July to September. During the rainy season, it is recommended to bring a folding umbrella, non-slip shoes, quick-drying trousers, and a light jacket; children should bring an extra pair of shoes and socks. The dry season is from October to February of the following year, with large temperature differences between day and night. From December to February, it is damp and cold, requiring a light down or fleece jacket plus a windproof jacket. During the day, layering clothing is acceptable; thick down jackets are not recommended for extended periods indoors.
