Tourists driving through the Greater Khingan Mountains encountered a brown bear begging for food on the hood of their car; official response.
On September 8th, a tourist named "Qingzhou" posted on social media that around 10:00 AM that day, while driving through the uninhabited area of National Highway G331 from Beiji Village in the Daxinganling region of Heilongjiang Province to Shiwei in Inner Mongolia, he encountered two brown bears blocking his road and begging for food. The bears not only sat in the middle of the road blocking his way, but also climbed onto the hood of his vehicle, pushed against the rearview mirrors, and stared at the passengers inside. Fortunately, the bears did not use their claws, and the vehicle was not damaged. On the 9th, a reporter contacted local authorities, and staff reminded drivers that if they encounter brown bears, they should not get out of their vehicles, feed them, or open the windows.
The photos and videos accompanying the online post show a brown bear standing up, its front paws resting on the hood of a car, looking directly at passengers through the windshield; another video shows a brown bear crouching in front of the car, blocking its path. The post sparked heated discussion among netizens, with some joking, "This is a brown bear 'robbing' us!" Others commented that the brown bear "looks kind," but this view was refuted by netizens, who countered, "No, it looks like that when it's staring at food." Many more netizens warned, "Don't feed wild animals."
On the morning of the 9th, "Qingzhou" told reporters that the incident occurred on a section of road between Luoguhe Village and Qigan Village, about a 40-minute drive after entering Luoguhe Village. They had parked to watch the brown bears. Because there were many vehicles on that section of road, some tourists fed the bears. One bear ate food, while the other, which hadn't received any, started pawing at their car. "It came over to our car wanting food, climbed onto the hood, and then moved to the right rearview mirror, pushing it inside," "Qingzhou" said. She added that they didn't feed them, and the bear quickly stopped pawing at the car after not getting any food. "Then it got off, and we drove away."
On the 9th, a reporter called the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of the Daxinganling Region in Heilongjiang Province. An employee stated that if encountering a brown bear, one should not get out of the vehicle or feed it. "If you feed it, it will get used to it and keep asking for more, which could pose a danger to other tourists." The employee said that it's okay to park and observe, "but remember not to get out of the vehicle or feed it." She also reminded everyone that the local weather has turned cold, and cycling is not recommended.
An official from the Qigan Township Government in Ergun City, Inner Mongolia, stated that wild animals are indeed frequently sighted in the Greater Khingan Mountains. Self-driving tourists should not get out of their vehicles deep in the forest. If they encounter wild animals, they can observe them from a distance, "but don't open the windows or honk the horn loudly, and they won't attack you." The official also warned against feeding them, stating, "If you get into the habit of feeding them, incidents of injury may occur later." The official further advised planning the route in advance, filling up the gas tank, and bringing enough food and water, as the route is mostly through uninhabited areas, sometimes requiring driving hundreds of kilometers before finding a settlement. While it's acceptable to get out at scenic spots along the way, leaving the vehicle in dense forest areas is not recommended. (Source: Upstream News)
