These 4 accommodation areas in Sanya | A list to avoid accommodation pitfalls for early morning flights and overnight layovers (personally tested)

To catch the 7 AM flight to Beijing, I naively booked a beachfront guesthouse in Sanya Bay. As a result, I dragged my suitcase across half the city at 4:30 AM, and the transportation cost was higher than the room rate. After that, I revisited the accommodation areas within two kilometers of several transportation hubs in Sanya and discovered that many people have misconceptions about staying near airports/high-speed rail stations. This post doesn't recommend trendy beachfront rooms; it's only for those transiting, taking early morning flights, landing late at night, or planning to transfer to Lingshui or Wanning.

I. Airport Hub: The area around Phoenix Airport Road and Huihui Community in Phoenix Town allows red-eye flights to land without needing to enter the city.

Exiting the terminal at Sanya Phoenix Airport, head towards Airport Road and Phoenix Town. The nearest concentrated accommodation area is the Huihui Community and Yanglan Road area. In practice, it takes about 5 minutes by taxi from the arrival level, and about 15 to 20 minutes on foot during the day. However, walking at night with luggage is not recommended as street lighting is generally poor. The area mainly consists of hotels and guesthouses converted from self-built houses by local residents, with prices primarily affordable.

This is suitable for people who land after midnight and have a connecting flight or travel to the western route early the next morning. Airport buses and most public transportation are reduced late at night, but the biggest advantage of this area is that you don't have to rely on the last bus. It should be noted that some room windows face the airport road or the access road to and from the airport, and there is significant truck and airport drop-off/pick-up traffic at night. Light sleepers should choose a room that is not facing the street.

2. High-speed rail hub: The Lizhigou Road area north of Sanya Station, carrying suitcases to catch the earliest island-looping bullet train.

Sanya Station is a crucial node on the Hainan Island High-Speed Railway, requiring transfers to reach Haikou, Lingshui, and Wanning. Surprisingly, the most developed area within a two-kilometer radius isn't directly opposite the station square, but rather along Lizhigou Road to the north. The nearest accommodation on Lizhigou Road is about a 10-minute walk from the station exit, or a 3-5 minute taxi ride (the starting fare).

This area boasts a high density of chain hotels and local business guesthouses, offering a quieter environment than beachfront guesthouses, with consistent bedding quality. It's suitable for those arriving in Sanya that afternoon and planning to take the island-looping high-speed train to the eastern route or back to Haikou the following morning. The first tram departs from Sanya Station around 6:30 AM, and bus services are frequent during the day but become less frequent after 10 PM. If your high-speed train arrives late at night, it's advisable to contact the hotel in advance to confirm pick-up or take a taxi directly; avoid lingering too late in front of the station.

Key points to avoid: Some buildings on Lizhigou Road that face the railway have a clear view of the announcements of high-speed trains entering and leaving the station and the sound of wheels and rails when you open your window. When booking, choose a room that "faces away from the railway" or request a higher floor or inner room when you check in.

III. Passenger Transport Hub: The optimal transfer route from Chunyuan Road (north of Sanya Passenger Transport Terminal) to Mingzhu Square area for those traveling to Baoting and Wuzhishan.

Sanya Bus Terminal is located on the northern section of Jiefang Road in the old town, serving as a hub for buses to surrounding counties and towns such as Baoting, Wuzhishan, and Yazhou. Within a two-kilometer radius, the area from Chunyuan Road to Mingzhu Square is the best choice. It's about a 5-8 minute walk from the terminal, across the street. This area is part of the old town's residential area; even at 9 or 10 pm, there are still people eating "qingbuliang" (a type of sweet soup) on the streets, so late-night arrivals won't have to worry about finding food.

Accommodation in this area ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range chain hotels, making it suitable for those catching early morning buses to the central mountainous region. Most public buses in Sanya operate from 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM, but buses from the main bus station to towns depart earlier, so it's advisable to stay as close to the nearest departure point as possible. A word of caution: some older buildings along Jiefang Road lack elevators. If you're bringing large suitcases, make sure to confirm the availability of an elevator or book a lower floor when booking; otherwise, moving your luggage at night will be a nightmare.

IV. Key Tram Transfer Station: From Xinfeng Street Station to the First Market area, Sanya does not have a subway, but this tram system is more practical than a subway.

Sanya city currently has no subway, but the T1 tram line connects Sanya Railway Station, the old town, and Sanya Port. The main transfer area is concentrated between Jiefang Road Station and Xinfeng Street Station. Living in this area is equivalent to living at Sanya's most convenient "subway-like" node. It takes about 15 minutes by tram to the high-speed rail station, and the First Market for seafood is within walking distance.

After getting off at Xinfeng Street Station, there are numerous hotels and apartments within a 2-kilometer radius. It's about an 8-minute walk to the First Market, and a taxi to Sanya Bay is just the starting fare. This is suitable for people who arrive at Sanya Station in the evening and want to head straight to the old town for late-night snacks, and don't have to catch an early flight the next day. The tram runs from approximately 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM; after that, you'll need to take a taxi or ride a shared electric scooter.

Avoid these pitfalls: The area around the First Market gets very lively at night, and some guesthouses are located right next to seafood processing shops, with sounds of woks and delivery trucks still audible in the early hours of the morning. Those who prefer a quieter environment are advised to stay on the north side of Xinfeng Street or the west side of Shengli Road, away from the back entrance of the food street.

Blogger's Summary and Practical Tips List

The common logic for these four areas is: first consider the type of hub, then the arrival/departure times, and finally, compare prices. Airport areas are suitable for overnight stays, high-speed rail station areas are suitable for catching bullet trains, bus station areas are suitable for catching early morning rural buses, and tram transfer stations are suitable for finding a balance between the old town and transit.

A few tips learned from past mistakes: Don't drag your suitcase around looking for your hotel late at night; check the entrance location on a map beforehand. Many guesthouses in Sanya don't have a front desk; check-in is done by contacting the manager. "Sea view" and "coconut grove" near transportation hubs are mostly marketing terms; don't expect to see the sea when you open your window. Finally, no matter where you stay, always specify "no street frontage, no railway tracks, and elevator required" when booking; these three points will help you avoid most problems.
