Slow Travel in Quanzhou: A Practical Guide for Families on a 7-Day, 6-Night In-Depth Slow Trip
Day 1 Bell Tower West Street and Kaiyuan Temple
Upon arrival in Quanzhou, avoid long-distance travel. In the afternoon, enter West Street from the Bell Tower. First, stroll slowly along the arcade buildings, observing the red brick houses and Republican-era Western-style buildings on both sides. West Street is crowded in the afternoon; if you have elderly people or children with you, it's recommended to walk along the inner side to avoid electric vehicles. Around 5 PM, enter Kaiyuan Temple. First, observe the exterior facades of the East and West Pagodas, then walk through the Mahavira Hall and the Ganlu Ordination Platform. Kaiyuan Temple has many ancient trees, and the ground is mainly paved with stone slabs; be careful of slippery surfaces on rainy days. Have dinner around West Street, avoiding popular restaurants with long queues.
Day 2: South Gate Maritime Memory and Confucian Temple
In the morning, we visited the Tianhou Temple, the center of Mazu worship in Quanzhou, where the architecture boasts rich details in wood and stone carvings. Next door, the Deji Gate ruins preserve the city gates from the Song and Yuan dynasties and strata from different periods, making it a good place to explain the evolution of this port city to children. In the afternoon, we visited the Quanzhou Confucian Temple, where the Dacheng Hall and the Pan Pool are well-preserved, and the surrounding corridors offer places to sit and rest. In the evening, we walked back to our accommodation along the arcades of Zhongshan Road, focusing on the arcade columns and window lintels, without going to any shopping malls.
Day 3-Day 4: Choose one of the two options: nearby or suburban.
Choose only one route for these two days; combining two is not recommended. Route A: Ancient Town & Seaside: Day 3: Visit Yongning Ancient City in Shishi, stroll along Yongning Old Street and visit the City God Temple. In the afternoon, visit Guanyin Mountain to see the coastal erosion landforms. You can stay overnight in Shishi. Day 4: In the morning, climb Baogai Mountain to see the Gushao Pagoda. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely walk along the Golden Coast; avoid approaching the rocks if it's windy. Route B: Hot Springs & Mountain Wilderness: Day 3: Visit the Ceramics Museum in Dehua. In the afternoon, check into a hot spring hotel for a relaxing soak. Day 4: Hike lightly along the buffer zone of Daiyun Mountain Nature Reserve, choosing a flat trail for the return trip; do not climb to the summit. Route A is more suitable for tourists who want to see the sea and ancient towns, while Route B is more suitable for those who prefer tranquility and want to recover their energy.
Day 5: Maritime Museum and South City Religious Site
Two hours are allocated in the morning for the Quanzhou Maritime Museum, focusing on the Song Dynasty shipwreck and religious stone carvings; advance reservations are recommended. In the afternoon, visit Qingjing Mosque and Guanyue Temple, both within walking distance. Qingjing Mosque is a stone structure with steps, so elderly people should walk slowly. Guanyue Temple is very popular; if the hall is crowded, you can burn incense in the incense burner area outside. No night tour is planned; return to your accommodation to rest in the evening.
Day 6 Qingyuan Mountain and Luoyang Bridge
In the morning, enter Qingyuan Mountain from the Lao Jun Yan entrance. Only visit Lao Jun Yan and the stupa containing the relics of Master Hongyi, taking the gentle slope path and avoiding Tianhu Lake and the mountaintop. Qingyuan Mountain has many steps, so bringing a folding walking stick will save you energy. In the afternoon, go to Luoyang Bridge. It's recommended to check the tides; at low tide, you can see boat-shaped piers and oysters attached to them. The long stone slabs on the bridge are uneven, so walk in the middle of the bridge the entire time and avoid taking photos on the edges.
Day 7: Finishing touches on the arcade buildings along Zhongshan Road
Spend the last half day leisurely exploring Zhongshan Road, Pan Palace, and Jinyu Lane, buying souvenirs such as braised pork in vinegar sauce, garlic sticks, and mung bean cakes. No flower-wearing activities or queues are permitted. Check out before noon to allow ample time to reach the train station or airport.
Gentle slope route suitable for the elderly and children
From Qingyuan Mountain, take the route from Lao Jun Rock to the Relic Pagoda of Master Hongyi and back, avoiding Tianhu Lake; follow the central axis of Luoyang Bridge; the entire route from Kaiyuan Temple to the Confucian Temple is flat and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers; Donghu Park or Xihu Park can be used for an evening walk.

Clothing suggestions for rainy and dry seasons
During Quanzhou's plum rain season (March to June) and typhoon season (August to September), humidity is high with frequent afternoon showers. Quick-drying clothing, non-slip hiking shoes, and folding umbrellas are recommended; avoid wearing sandals with wedge soles. From October to February of the following year, there are significant temperature differences between day and night, and the wind is noticeable at the beach; a light down jacket or windproof jacket is necessary. UV radiation is strong year-round, so keep sun hats and sunglasses in your bag at all times.
