Sleeping near the transportation hub in Yinchuan | A firsthand review of 4 accommodation areas within 2 kilometers of transit points (a list to avoid if you're arriving early or late)
The biggest mistake I made while transiting through Yinchuan wasn't the lack of transportation, but staying in the wrong area. The area around Hedong Airport seemed close, but I almost missed my flight in the middle of the night because I took the wrong route with my luggage. The South Square and West Station rooms at Yinchuan Railway Station offered completely different sleeping experiences. This post won't recommend trendy hotels; instead, it will compile a list of four cost-effective areas within 2 kilometers of transportation hubs that I personally tested, highlighting walking or taxi times, first and last train/bus times, and points to avoid.
I. South Square Area of Yinchuan Railway Station | Sleep immediately upon arrival of high-speed rail/regular train, the first choice for overnight arrivals
Yinchuan Railway Station is a mixed high-speed and regular train station. The area within 2 kilometers of the South Square has the highest density of hotels. It takes about 8 to 12 minutes to walk from the exit to Fuzhou Street and Xinhua Lian Plaza; dragging luggage on the surface is much easier than using the underground passage. A taxi ride is generally within the starting fare and takes about 5 minutes. First and last train/bus references: The latest high-speed or bullet trains arriving at Yinchuan Station are around 22:30 to 23:00, with trains departing before 7:00 AM. Buses such as routes 301 and 39 mostly operate from 6:00 AM to 22:00. This is suitable for people arriving in Yinchuan by high-speed train overnight and catching an early high-speed train the next morning, or for those transferring in Alashan.
I personally tested it; exiting from the South Square and walking with a 24-inch suitcase to Fuzhou Street takes about 10 minutes. The road surface is smooth and much safer than going around through the underpass on the west side. A word of caution: Don't stay in small hotels right next to the north side of the railway or outside the West Station building. The whistles of freight trains and the vibrations from the tracks are very noticeable at night. I once stayed outside the West Station building and was woken up by the vibrations at around 4 AM. Try to choose chain hotels within a 10-minute walk of the South Square, and specify "facing the residential area or inner street" when booking; this will ensure a much quieter environment.
II. Riverside Areas Around Hedong Airport | Early Morning Flights for Safety and Accommodation, Midnight Landing for Peace of Mind
Yinchuan Hedong International Airport is about 20 kilometers from the city center. Within 2 kilometers of the airport, most accommodations are concentrated in Linhe Town, east of the airport, mainly consisting of guesthouses and airport-affiliated hotels. A taxi ride from the terminal takes about 5 to 8 minutes; some guesthouses offer pick-up and drop-off services, but this needs to be confirmed in advance. Walking is impractical, especially if landing in the early morning; taking a taxi is recommended. Airport shuttle buses typically run from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM. After landing for a night flight, taxis or ride-hailing services are the main options, taking about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the city center.
This is suitable for those catching an early morning flight before 7:00 AM, or those who land late at night and don't want to go into the city. I stayed here once for an early morning flight, and it only took 6 minutes to get to the terminal by car at 4:00 AM, much more convenient than going from the city. A word of caution: there are very few dining options in this area; if you want something hot at night, you'll have to rely on instant noodles at the hotel. Don't trust those offering "free pick-up" outside the airport; agree on the pick-up time and license plate number before getting in the car to avoid being taken to a remote farmhouse late at night. Prices range from guesthouses costing a few tens of yuan per person to mid-range hotels.
3. Overnight stay at the Passenger Transport Center in the Yinchuan Bus Station/Qinghe South Street area for convenient travel to surrounding counties and banners.
Yinchuan Bus Station (South Gate Bus Station) is located on Qinghe South Street in Xingqing District. The area within 2 kilometers is a concentration of established local accommodations. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the bus station to Shengli Street and Qinghe Street, or a 5-minute taxi ride. For reference, buses departing from the station to Wuzhong, Zhongwei, Guyuan, etc., mostly run from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Early morning buses start before 6:30 AM. If you arrive in Yinchuan at night and want to take a bus to a nearby county the next morning, staying here is the most convenient option.
This is suitable for transit passengers using Yinchuan as a stepping stone to southern Ningxia or Alxa Left Banner in Inner Mongolia. After the overnight bus arrives, there are often people soliciting accommodation on the roadside; it's recommended to book in advance and not follow them. Tips to avoid: Qinghe South Street has many large trucks, and rooms facing the street may experience truck traffic and honking at night; always choose a high floor facing away from the main street. This area has many older hotels with varying facilities; when booking, focus on reviews of hotels renovated within the last two years, and don't just go for the cheapest option.
IV. South Gate Square/Gulou Public Transportation Transfer Area | A "Subway-like" Hub in a City Without a Subway, the Most Convenient Place for Shopping and Dining in the Old Town
Yinchuan currently does not have a subway. The most fitting "core transfer station" is the bus and BRT transfer corridor from Nanmen Square to Gulou. BRT Line 1 at Nanmen Square and several bus routes around Gulou converge here. For reference, BRT Line 1 mostly operates from 6:00 to 22:00, while most regular buses stop running from 6:30 to 21:30. If you live within 2 kilometers of this area, it's about a 5-12 minute walk to Nanmen Square or Gulou, and about a 15-minute taxi ride to Yinchuan Railway Station.
This hotel is suitable for those arriving in Yinchuan at night and wanting to explore the old town along the way, with public transportation planned for the following day. Walking back to the hotel from the Drum Tower in the evening, the mutton noodle stalls and small barbecue stands along the route create a charming old-town atmosphere. A word of caution: The square dancing and loudspeakers from shops around the South Gate Square don't stop until around 10 PM. If you're sensitive to noise, stay in the alleys north of the Drum Tower or near the Jade Emperor Pavilion; they're much quieter. Also, parking is difficult in this area, so it's not recommended to stay here if you're driving.
The blogger summarizes: Each of the four areas has its own focus. For those catching high-speed trains, stay at the South Square of Yinchuan Station; for those catching early morning flights, stay in the riverside area near the airport; for those catching buses, stay on Qinghe Street near the bus station; and for those wanting to explore the old town and use public transportation, stay at the South Gate Square or Drum Tower area. The biggest advantage of accommodation in the Yinchuan hub area is its concentration and affordable prices; the biggest drawbacks are soundproofing and having to move luggage at night.
Useful Tips List:
Tip 1: There is no direct subway between Yinchuan Station and the airport. If you are transferring at night, be sure to allow time for a taxi. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport to the city center.
Tip 2: When booking accommodations near transportation hubs, pay attention to whether the accommodations have been renovated within the last two years and the orientation of the windows. Soundproofing is generally not very good for street-facing rooms in the old town.
Tip 3: When taking an early morning flight, try to choose a flight that includes airport drop-off or confirm in advance the difficulty of booking a ride in the early morning. There are quite a few ride-hailing services available at Yinchuan Airport in the early morning, but it is recommended to book in advance.
Tip 4: If you are only transiting during the day and not staying overnight, the airport shuttle bus to Nanmen Square or Gulou is the most convenient option, and you don't need to stay at the airport.
